thank you, thank you. i've been thinking to install those same Kappas and wondered about the depth. where'd you get the harness adapter?

Rear hatch/rear doors (no clearence issues) I used the adapter that came with speakers and Boom Mat Speaker Baffles.
Front doors speakers (6x9), took factory speakers and cut the complete speaker out. Then used the frame to mount the new speakers with baffles. Or you could make an adapters to space speakers out, otherwise window will hit speaker when rolled down.

Got my kappa dash speakers for $94ish some how the price has gone up since the beginning of this thread... The Toyota4runner crew must being driving the price up!
Went to best buy then Frys, then audio express then as a last ditch effort tried radio shack to find That No one carried bass blockers(frys is only online)...a couple people while there said the kappa had a built in crossover so their was no need for them to just adjust the fade and bass on factory head unit...(I read a thread that says otherwise) I still want them in my hand so when i install the speakers if I don't need them great... if I do I can attach them.
Rant over and install pushed back to Tuesday when they arrive.

just FYI the 693.9i three-ways will be overkill. since you have the JBL "15-speaker" system your front doors are only getting the low-pass (everything else to the dash), so the mids and tweeters won't be driven at all if you put the 693.9i in your doors. a simple mid-woofer will be better.

(Reposting this here where it belongs)
So finally got my necessary/unnecessary Bass blockers the other night (the debate of bass blocker is like debating if unicorns are real) I figured I could quickly throw in the dash kappas before heading out of town... Big thanks to the great threads giving such huge detail... And Gojaybee also did a great writeup showing where to cut the brackets... So with some faith in the forum, I didn't test fit anything I just used the the kappa threads from where to cut the bracket and what color power and neg...
So here's some pics... Only took six hours... First time soldering... What did I learn? The soldering tip is hot. Also my first time using heat shrink... Heat shrink is a lot of fun, I kind of went a little crazy with it. Used some pieces of "boom mat baffle" to make a cup type enclosure to protect the speaker from touching surrounding metal to protect the issues others spoke about in previous threads... Made the fit a little tighter. Happy with the results. On to the next speakers...

I looked over this thread, and some of the other speaker threads, but I cant seem to find the answer I am looking for.
Are there no speakers that fit into the 4runner without having to have custom speaker mounts and such? I don't feel like I have the know how to cut wooden frames for speakers, and create new tabs, etc, and know that if an install shop has to do this, it will cost an arm and a leg.
So, is this necessary if I want to upgrade the speakers? Or are there some that will fit without any modification?

Try do a search on Crutchfields site. They show speakers that fit in the back doors and tailgate. They also show some that fit with a little modification. As for the 6 x 9 in the front doors, I don't think there is anything that fits without some modification. The dash speakers are really easy to mount even if some modding is required. Probably the best place to start. Also, do some web searching. I'm sure there are people that market speaker mounts for Toyotas. Toyotas are notorious for "proprietary" mounting, locked down, crappy sounding stereos. The crappy sound part has improved some but they intentionally make it hard to upgrade.

So I am trying to get mentally prepared for Kappa dash speaker install later this week. I have the '12 Entune 8 speaker system with Nav. These models are hard to find now - and I paid $100! Oh well, just supply and demand in a free economy.
So I bought 150mhz bass blockers - is that too low - others have used 300 or 600?
Do I just cut off the factory connector then put the bass blocker with the positive wires and then attach the negative direct to the kappa connector?
Do I need to attach the blue piece from the oem speaker?
What is the best way to connect the wires together since some will be striped then others have that slide connection?
Many thanks to all the previous posts! I have learned with age to ask all the stupid questions up front so I don't have to ask any "Please Help - I messed up" questions!

So it appears Infinity Kappa 3.29's are no longer available:moping: Has anyone tried the Reference series from Infinity? Or have any other recommendations?

They're available but really tough to find. I just installed a pair last week in my 2013. I got them from speedsound.com for around $78 a pair including shipping. They have two pair left, they said. These speakers do, in fact, make an unbelievable difference in the sound.

How's the warranty on the Infinity speakers? If only one blew maybe it was just defective and maybe worth a shot to see if you can get it warrantied?

I think distortion kills speakers more so than amplified or not? And I've also read that under driving a speaker with no amp could kills speakers too? And well quite frankly I am no audiophile so take all that with a grain of salt
Did you pull everything out to test if it's definitely a messed up speaker and not a failed solder joint or some other connection?

JL c2 series has a 3.5 in coax. Should fit but not confirmed. I don't know about sound quality but it's gotta be better than the stock speaker. Other than that, there are only a few inexpensive coax speakers that fit. There are some expensive mid range drivers like the Hybrid Audio Legatias that fit and will play almost all the way to 20 kHz. People have won competitions running these with no tweeter but they are about $350+ a pair or more if you go with the top models. Someone on this forum found a used pair on DIYMA and really loves um. I bet they sound really, really nice but you really should run an external amp to do them justice.
Caution. Most speakers are 4 ohm and less efficient than the stock or Kappas so will play a little softer and depending on which stereo you have, may not be in balance with the door speakers. Also, if you have the basic stereo that connects the dash and door in parallel, probably not good to mix 4 ohm and 2 ohm speakers.

you could try these JBLs... which are also 2 ohms, like the Infinity Kappas (JBL and Infinity, et al. are all part of the same larger company, in fact).
side note: are all the car audio companies on the verge of releasing their new models? seems like many brands are out of stock (or nearing it) so it looks like clearing inventory in the pipeline to make way for the new stock.
Polk I know has been rolling out lots of new speakers.
Kappas were a great choice. I continue to like my 4Runner system more than anything else I hear that is close to what I paid for it.
