What are the largest wheels/tires i can install on my 99?

Hello, I have owned my 99 4runner since 98 and have used it as a work truck, now its time to show it some love. Its presently going through a transformation thanks to NORTH SHORE OFF-ROAD in North Vancouver Canada. This week they are installing a 2" lift kit (new springs, shocks and struts with the lift kit).

Question: can i install a set of Pro Comp 1079 16X8 wheels? And what size tires without doing any further mods?

I have 16x8 Ivans on my 2wd with 265/70 and have no problems. I don't even have fender flares, just the SR5 chrome trim @ my fender lip.

If you would have gone with a 3" lift you could have probably fit 285's.

Thanks. I too would like to keep with the stock wheel well trim. I think that I would like to go to at least 275/70 16 and possibly 285/70 16.....still debating whether to keep the stock rims or go to an 16 X 8 rim. From what I see on this forum, most guys are putting 275/70 and the occasional 285/70 on their stock rims. Looks good too.

The lift kit is to be installed on Thursday, so today is decision day for me. At this point I'm leaning towards a set of 275/70 r16 Yoko Geolander at-s.

If I go 285/70 r 16 on stock 16X7 wheels do you think that i will still get the rub on the front?

Maybe the tire store will will help me with that little experiment.

265/70/16 would look really small with a 3''. i have 265/75/16 with no lift, just stock 4x4. i dont know if your familiar with the numbers, but the first number (265 or 285 ect.) is the width in centimeters, and the second (70, 75, 80 ect.) is the aspect ratio, or the percent of the width, from the top of the rim to the top of the tire. so 285 70 is bigger because its wider regardless of the fact that the the second number on 265/75 is a bigger number. i would go with the 285's. look around for pics.

Monday I purchased a set of 275/70 R16 Yoko Geolanders A/T S from 1010tires.com, arrived today. Maybe next year I will go for the 285's.

Ok here is an update: Last Thursday I had the 3" lift kit installed (3" rear....2.5 front) I had already purchased Yoko Geolander 275/70 16 AT-S tires and these were installed after the new procomp struts and shocks and OME springs. When I picked up my truck I was surprised that the 275's looked a little on the small side.

I tried 285/75 16 tires on factory 16x7 rims today but the tires rubbed on the steering arm (that upper assembly...you know which one).

What would you do?
a. leave well enough alone
b. add a 1.25" spacer
c. go with new rims that have 3.75 back space.

Just curious because I see several rigs on this site with 285/75 r 16 and I am wondering what you had to do to make it work.

Thanks for the comment. Looking for a set of rims may be the answer and in hindsight perhaps going with the BFG AT KO.....a little more aggressive tread, the Geolanders are good quality but not as beefy looking.

I run my stock rims with Destination A/T's for my weekly/commuter driving, swap out my beater rims for wheeling. Here is pic of the Tundra rims (I am in the process of painting black), I have about 600 lbs. of crap in the back so my ass looks a little saggy:bash:

Sure, it would be great to have the cash to go out and buy the correct backspaced rims, but I drive a lot of miles so I chose just to swap out my wheeling tire/rim setup when I need them.

I have a 30 gallon compressor and a impact gun, that and a floor jack makes a 20 minute swap. :bigok:

dude, wow the whole time i was reading this i was thinking you were putting 265/70's on not 275's but i think the 275's look great, but a little beefier would make a sweet difference, but it looks really good. i think you should get 1" spacers and beefier tires.

I think the standard Yota 16" rim has right about 4.500/4.625 backspace. If I were going to buy new and wanted to have the potential to run wider/larger tires I would want no more than 3.250. I searched briefly and didn't find anything to justify the cost.
