Another benefit to wiring the fog lights up independently: They will stay on even if you have your hi-beams on. I've been in situations where I could use all the light possible, which is not too bad with the hi-beams and foglights together.

In many states, that is illegal. The foglights must turn off when the high-beams come on. On every car I have seen, the foglights went off when the highbeams come on. The 4Runner does this and so does the X5. The X5's foglights do not stay on all the time, you have to manually turn them on. When they are on, you see the little foglight icon on the dashboard go off when the highbeams are on and come back on when they go off. This is to prevent you from blinding oncoming traffic.

yeah, both of my 4runners would cut the fogs out once i activated my hi's. when i was living in DC, my GF still had a VW Jetta. anyway, i used to park the car for her at night and learned a way to operate the hi's w/ the fogs… all i did was pull back the hi beam stalk (as if you would to flash someone) but not all the way back and hold it and both the fogs + hi's worked at the same time… there was a ton of light… i tried the same trick w/ both of my 4runners but it didn't work…

Yeah, I know it's illegal. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to use the foglights with the hi-beams if we choose to use them responsibly.

i'm with you… i wish there was a way i could wire my fogs to turn on whenever i want, especially w/ my hi's… when i had my first truck, a GMC Jimmy, i bought a pair of Hella 550's (forget the #) and them wired to turn on when my hi's went on and it was great… especially around where i live, there are lots of unlit backroads and deer…

You can do that very easily.... If you tap just one single wire into the parking lamp circuit, you will be able to control your foglights via the foglight switch whenever your parking lights/headlights/hi-beams are on...

oh man… it sounds easy. i think the hardest part would trying to find the correct wires. can anyone describe what one it is? or does anyone have pics, etc?

I've done this on my Toyota Supra....all I had to do on the Supra was ground the #1 pin of the fog relay...thats it...I'm not sure about how the 4Runner works, but I'm sure its similar...I'll look at doin the same thing to my 2005 4Runner whan I get the chance

Basically, when your lights are on (parking lights, low beams, or high beams), you fogs are on. You can also wire this to a switch inside so you can still turn them off if you want to...on my Supra I just let them be on all the time
