What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

I made my 5th gen go bye bye yesterday. After 18 months of issues I'd rather own a Volkswagen and a Jeep with 190k miles over my 4runner :(

Snagged a fresh off the car carrier 2015 Jetta TDI SEL 6MT.

(The sad 4Runner can be seen in the background)

It's been great hanging out around here and you are all a great, helpful bunch!

Just because he got rid of a truck that didn't work our for him? Way to keep it classy surfin. Good luck Todd

I've found there's quite a lot of intolerant people in the Toyota truck world. I've got thick skin and will be ok. Sad that I didn't get to turn the 4R into what I wanted it to be but hopefully someone will enjoy the truck.

whatever you do don't join VWFIXX.com then no GLI or VR6 is blasphemy! haha good luck with your new wheels. I am very tolerant you are just the first person I have ever seen/heard think a VW is somehow more reliable than a yota

Good luck with your new Jetta and enjoy that awesome MPG! fuel saved is more money money for projects.

Please elaborate, I can't imagine 18 months of issues in a 4runner, yes I'm biased but i'm on this forum everyday and there really aren't that many crazy issues with this truck

Right off the bat on day 1 was a failed door latch on the passenger front door. problematic front axle, after some fighting with Toyota they agreed to replace even though my truck wasn't covered under the TSB for it. At the same time I was complaining about poor shifts from 1-2. Could not recreate.

After the weather started to warm up the sunroof made terrible noises in the vent position and pinch protection would go off when trying to close from the fully open position. The noise while vented was fixed after I completely took the sunroof assembly apart, adjusted and lubricated the belt. Pinch protection continued to be a problem up until trade in requiring weekly calibrations in order for it to shut at all.

The lumbar in the drivers seat constantly crunches, toyota won't touch that unless I shell out over $500.

Repeated trips back to the dealer for the transmission shifting and referencing the appropriate TSB, tried multiple dealers with all coming back saying shifting and the outrageous whine it made was normal. Fluid has been flushed. Within the last few months the torque converter began to shudder and I began to have a very harsh shift into 5th. Dropped the trans pan at this point to change out the fluid and filter in which I found a large amount of gold shavings lodged in the filter. At that point I buttoned things up and started car shopping.

I dealt with owning a Saab for 4 years and had constant problems but I loved the car. I can't say much of the same for the 4Runner. I also bought the 4Runner because it was there and was priced well below book value. It wasn't exactly what I wanted and I can't 4wheel a truck as nice as it is. So in the end it was 50% of the issues and 50% of it just wasn't the truck for me.

This was a brand new 4runner? Or previously owned? I would have probably gone through lemon law instead of lose out on a trade in.

Preowned unfortunately. All in all trading with worn tires and in need of a new front bumper cover I only lost $3000 in 18 months and 20,000 miles. So the 4Runner did live up to its reputation there of holding it's value.

A toyota certified pre-owned? Private sale? 3rd party dealer?

Pre-owned dealer, normally has a rep for selling good cars but it seems one slipped through. Because of the price I have to wonder if they knew what they had :(

Sounds like a lemon, sorry you experienced all that and thanks for sharing.

Definitely sounds like that but after reading some stories over on Tacoma World and the FJ forum it sounds like I'm not the only one. May still come back with a second or third gen but for now my newly acquired XJ will keep me entertained in the woods.

Sounds like my Wife's former 2008 Nissan Rouge.

She bought it as a Dealership's demo with 20,000 kms on it. This was before I met her. After taking over the maintance of it, It looked like the car was smashed and the dealership fixed it cheaply and got rid of it. The paint started to crack, there was bent metal underneth and one of the alignment bolts of maxed out.

On top of the el-crapo Nissan quality, the thing also started to rust really quickly in Southern Ontario where tons and tons of salt are dumped onto the winter.

Costco couldn't even undo the TPMS to change the orings when we got new tires for it. I torched the brake pad/caliper bracket in order to change rotors.

Nissan recalled all their vehicles for airbag passenger weight sensor. The car was fixed under recall in 2009. But the same sensor failed again in 2014. On top of that every year months the CVT transmission cooler would leak. It was fixed 3 times under the power train warranty until we exceeded the mileage. Then I had to pay out of pocket for 2 new CVT oilcoolers. The hose the feeds the input nipple was not properly designed such that the hose was properly strain reliefed. So overtime the brazed on nipple would crack.

What a f'n POS car. This was also after I convinced my dad to dump his 2006 fully loaded Nissan Alitma that had it's struts replaced 6 times under warranty and the car also stalled at every red light when the engine was cold.

Mean while I had my 2003 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT 5MT that had over 200,000 kms that I owned since brand new, and drove it like I stole it. I hooned that car every time I drove it.

Now all the cars are gone except for my 2007 Honda S2000, and I'm loving our new 2015 4runner limited.

2.0 Fox IFP CO's & Fox Rear 2.0 IFP Shocks

These got delivered last night - Hope to install these this weekend or next weekend when I get some spare time. Replace rear shocks and crank the front CO's 1" to level the rig out.

This one was originally from New York and the frame was showing a lot of rust on it. Being from Pennsyltucky I'm pretty used to seeing that but my experiences have been just on the surface. Toyotas seem to run quite deep....and flaky. It did have an accident on the Carfax but it appears to just have been superficial as the crash bar had the VIN still stamped on it and there was no frame/suspension damage.

Funny you mention the Rogue, my neighbor has a 2010 and they keep having to put in transmission ECUs as it keeps blowing them. I noticed the other day that he gave up on it and has a 2015 Rogue now. Not sure if that was a wise decision or not. I guess we all end up with a bad seed.

Should have pulled some panels off to see if the truck had been swamped/flooded. Lots of unsavory folks trying to sell flood damage late model cars. It only takes a moving to a few states to wash a title.

I'm with you

That's why I won't buy used anymore unless I have done a lot of homework. I had a similar experience with an Isuzu Rodeo I bought from a Chevy dealer in Naples Florida about 12 years ago. Looked like it was in excellent shape, only had about 36,000 miles on it at about 3 years old... Started acting up so I took it to the Isuzu dealer in town (back when they were still around). As I pulled up and met the service writer, he looked it over and called over another guy to meet me, which I thought was odd. Then they said "Oh man, we know this car well, it's been IN A LAKE!!!" Apparently it had slipped out of park and just rolled on in until it was completely submerged!!!! You'd have never known it to look at it either. It looked like it was garage kept and was very clean... The point is, you just never really know for sure where something has been or who has owned it. I LOVE my 4 Runner. It's the first one I've owned out of probably a dozen Toyota's including 2 FJ's, a Tundra, 7 4X4 pickups from '84 to '06 (some Tacoma's, 4 before Tacoma), a Corolla and two Camry's...

I buy way too many cars!
