What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Should have pulled some panels off to see if the truck had been swamped/flooded. Lots of unsavory folks trying to sell flood damage late model cars. It only takes a moving to a few states to wash a title.

I had enough panels, seats, and carpets out to know there was no type of water damage. Definitely good advice!

Its crazy, nearly everything you describe points to something like that happening to the truck. Sorry your's had all these issues.

Right off the bat on day 1 was a failed door latch on the passenger front door. problematic front axle, after some fighting with Toyota they agreed to replace even though my truck wasn't covered under the TSB for it. At the same time I was complaining about poor shifts from 1-2. Could not recreate.

After the weather started to warm up the sunroof made terrible noises in the vent position and pinch protection would go off when trying to close from the fully open position. The noise while vented was fixed after I completely took the sunroof assembly apart, adjusted and lubricated the belt. Pinch protection continued to be a problem up until trade in requiring weekly calibrations in order for it to shut at all.

The lumbar in the drivers seat constantly crunches, toyota won't touch that unless I shell out over $500.

Repeated trips back to the dealer for the transmission shifting and referencing the appropriate TSB, tried multiple dealers with all coming back saying shifting and the outrageous whine it made was normal. Fluid has been flushed. Within the last few months the torque converter began to shudder and I began to have a very harsh shift into 5th. Dropped the trans pan at this point to change out the fluid and filter in which I found a large amount of gold shavings lodged in the filter. At that point I buttoned things up and started car shopping.

I dealt with owning a Saab for 4 years and had constant problems but I loved the car. I can't say much of the same for the 4Runner. I also bought the 4Runner because it was there and was priced well below book value. It wasn't exactly what I wanted and I can't 4wheel a truck as nice as it is. So in the end it was 50% of the issues and 50% of it just wasn't the truck for me.

Question regarding the failed door latch. You are the only other person who I've heard mention this.
The other being me.. I bought this vehicle and on the 2nd day when driving to work I heard a sound and the front passenger door warning came on. I could hear the door was no longer sealed and I could hear wind noise.

I held onto it till I could pull off the freeway and close the door.
The door didn't open fully, but it wasn't fully closed either.

This happened on a cooler day (high 30s) and I had already been driving for about 10 minutes when the door automatically opened.

What did you have done to fix it.. I'm a little concerned that it may happen again.

I actually had it happen while transferring the stuff from my old car to the new car. The door just acted like it was locked and would not unlock with the fob or manually moving the switch. The mechanic had to pull the panel off and detach the lock and was able to pop the door open. When they removed the latch they found the locking portion had jammed and they couldn't get it unjammed.

They got a new latch from the Toyota dealer and popped it in and I never had the same problem again thankfully. Oddly enough when I got Techstream and the OBD cable I had a code throw for a failed rear passenger latch but never had an issue with it. Not sure if it was related or not.

I took the dog to PetSmart for dog food, and a run around the field next to a local church. Tonight I did the nail polish color fill on the 4WD shift knob. I'll admit I was skeptical about the nail polish fill and wiping off, but even with a heavy first coat it came out great!

Finally had the chance to put on my Stealth Custom Series Gunmetal Grey wheels. They make the truck look much better than the stock 20's. The tires were rubbing so I had to push the fender liner forward and remove the protruding piece from the mudflaps.

I put on the stock tire size, 265/70/17. It rubbed way more than I thought it would.

Fixed rub, dipped badge, ordered rack.

After putting spacers on and driving around with the rub, I decided to fix it. I cut the smallest patch out that I could with a sharp ass knife, basically the only part where I saw that contact was being made.
After removing that piece, the bottom of the flap sagged and was likely to rub even more. Using some redneck ingenuity, I cut a slit in the horizontal surface of the flap, fed gutted 550 chord through with a ball knot on the bottom, and cinched it tight through a hole to the rear. Rubbing solved. Doesn't look pretty but works well. Also dipped my rear emblem today and most importantly, ordered a Gobi stealth

Had switched out the stock axle shafts with the Total Chaos +2" axle shafts. Two down, one to go for the spare.
