I like the flaps. Did you just drill holes so you could mount them using the stock bolts? they remind me of the old Toyota pickup/first gen taco flaps. The ones that actually worked well...

It was kind of a PIA for the rears.
the fronts were straight forward (used stock mounting points but had to "fab" up a bracket for the inside mount point)
the rears had to use the stock guards as they preform as a structure....anyway they had to be trimmed down to the basic inner shape then mounted to them....2 stock locations and one "custom" (just a small bolt washer nut combo)
Im not completely stoked as 3 of em are level and one is kinda crooked (my fault) and 2 of the 4 kind of have a skew/tilt,,,but overall they will preform as expected and give me the protection I wanted with the flexibility to do whatever I wanted forward and backwards

I too, made a Satoshi/TRD Pro mesh for my 4runner today, because I wasn't going to shell out $150+ for a piece of plastic.
I also made my own windshield washer reservoir relocation kit of sorts, because I wasn't going to shell out $150+ for a piece of plastic for that either.
Last two pics are from last week that I didn't post here, but I posted on Facebook on the 5th Gen 4runner Familia page. My friend and I made a Knight Rider scanner for the hood scoop.
I also made my own windshield washer reservoir relocation kit of sorts, because I wasn't going to shell out $150+ for a piece of plastic for that either.

Not the guy you quoted, but you need to ask yourself, do you really need to put shit on the roof? If yes, will a simple basket work, or do you need the weight capacity of the gives, front runners, etc..? Nine times out of ten, the answers are no.
They do look cool though.

I've had several trips to Home Depot for 8' lumber, pipe, etc. when I would've liked a nice roof rack instead of sticking stuff out the back window.
However, a cargo trailer is MUCH cheaper than a roof rack and easier to deal with.
Props to those of you who actually use the roof racks for long term off-grid camping though.

Love the knight rider mod! That's pretty clever… I was actually thinking about that the other day.

Yes, I'm working this old house a lot now. On Saturday I picked up an 8 foot 4x6 DF No 1 to reinforce my floor. I'm leveling and straightening everything before we build a new kitchen. I would not have put that 50 pound, sharp edged 4x6 into my car or hung it out the back window. Tying it down to my roof rack was easy and I know how to tie knots taught.
When I go camping and 4 wheeling I often have boxes of stuff on top of the car. Firewood, propane cans in a box, shovel, gear boxes. Even when it's tied down tight it still shifts around and scratches the roof. One trip really scratched the paint off the roof where stuff slid around.
That's the reason I bought a Baja Rack flat Utility Rack with cross bars rather than the mesh floor. I don't have a sunroof so no sunroof opening either. I had the back bar built straight because I didn't care if the satellite antennae works or had any signal interference. As luck would have it, the rack fits just over the top of the shark fin. I was going to swap the shark fin out for a smaller Corolla antennae but I didn't need to.
I don't use the rack every day but it's much easier than hauling a trailer and I can put 12 and 16 foot lumber up there if I need to. I had 7 sheets of plywood on top not long ago.

Installed some RCI transmission and transfer case aluminum skid plates after dinner. The fit is perfect!

5100's on the T4R today, w/285 Ridge Grapplers.... Ride is great thus far, went with mid weight OME's on the rear. Can't beat the stance... weekends will be more interesting!

Went 2.5" up front with stock springs, 2" & OME in the rear. If in the Chicago Area check out ChiTown4x4

I had the 5000 mile service done at the dealer which just consisted of basically a tire rotation. So I paid $49 to have them change the oil because I didn't want to go 10000 miles before the first oil change. Call me old school I guess. Also had them fix the crooked steering wheel and check the alignment. The toe was off so they fixed it for free. Got home and realized they overfilled the engine with oil. Fixed it myself rather than taking it all the way back and dealing with the hassle of getting them to fix it. Love this truck.
You're not alone. I just purchased my 4Runner and feel more comfortable having them change the mile at the first 5000 mile service interval. $50 is worth the peace of mind to me.
