What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Lesson learned. Even with ATs lower your tire pressure. Running at 44 PSI in 4ft of sugar sand. Came to a stop and it just sank. The drivers side doesn't look bad but the sand on the passenger side was up above the frame rails touching the body!

Ikea has a small recycling bin (bucket) called the VARIERA, (3 Gallons). It fits neatly on the back seat floor on the transmission tunnel. I hot glued a strip of velcro sheet on the bottom and it doesnt slide around.

Dilemma: How to safely transport a 9' fully rigged fly rod in the T4R.

Explanation: Yes, I know that breaking it down is the safest option but it takes time. When you are driving from one part of a river to the next, or are fishing where it may be crowded, the ability to park and GO, can be essential.

Options: Internally mounted overhead rod rack-T4R is too short and the angles on the ceiling don't work. External rod box like a Rod Vault or Big Sky Rod Box-expensive and don't have one yet (that will be my ultimate solution after my Gobi Stealth arrives; if it ever arrives.

Solution: Drop the pass through on the back seat. Place reel on rear edge of cargo liner. Cut a couple of knotches in a piece of foam pipe insulation (a DIY secret weapon BTW), velcro to carpet on back of pass through seat, and Bob's your uncle!

It works in the driveway; I'll see how it works on the road.

This is what I use. I've had it in two different vehicles, 4R currently and it's great. With the rods off the floor you can load up the back. I have it set up for four rods. Simple and cheap.

tell me this is a TE! after seeing the video of the tacoma digging itself out of the sand with "sand mode" im REALLY curious how my TE will do when buried in sand.

im just not adventurous enough to try.

Went in my TE to an amateur radio event today and won this in a raffle drawing.

That is awesome! I hope to take my Technician Exam next month before heading home to Colorado to visit family and wheel.

Having a 5 year old that eats a ton of food and a wife that has medical garbage (pill packs, vials of solution, etc...) I have been looking for a good way to collect the in-cabin garbage easily (well, I guess that is another feature I miss about my 4th Gen). Thank you for this!

Do you have any pictures of it in that spot?

Definitely not a Trail Edition (TE). I will say the "sand mode" does work, but it is not something I would want to rely on like a good set of tires and airing down. If I can make it to the dunes this summer, I will try to make a video of it working. I will still have a tow strap and come-along just in case.

Took advantage of the mother's day sale at xenondepot.com. Had to replace a few crap LED's from Performance led's. The license plate led's from performance flicker constantly and half the emitters don't work, so they were ordered. Ordered a phillips festoon to replace the performance led in the hatch that came to me not working. Replacing the front map lights with red led's and finally threw down some money and bought the Phillips yellow fog light led replacements.....as a reminder, do not buy anything from Performance LED's....crap company with horrible customer service. IMO.

Great setup. Thanks for the instructions as well. Nicely done. The confounder that I have is that I'm carrying a nine foot fly rod and the length of the 4R near the ceiling is a bit too short. I'd have to mount something that supports the weight of the reel within six inches of the back window. Initially I looked at the commercial option shown below but the length issue is a bit too tight.
I totally agree with getting the rods off the floor and out of harms way.

i always carry straps and a come along with me, still dont want to test it solo..
i dont have anyone around me to haul me out if i get stupid.

i will say im a believer in the traction control modes of this thing though.. i figured theyd be gimmicky and garbage but i went from 4lo spinning in loose rock and smoking tires on solid rock to just ambling forward like there was no obstacle. absolutely impressed, but smart enough to know this can just get me in bigger trouble if used improperly.

Itching to Explore

OK - I got the "EC" bug (Explore Colorado) this weekend as the weather was great in the western half of the state. I traveled to the Grand Junction area with my gear for some backcountry exploration. See slide 3 for the only traffic jam I encountered all weekend. It was beautiful and the landscape was remarkable with some of the strangest rock formations I have ever encountered closed up.

I set up camp with my new gear from ARB (Frig, awning and awning room) - enjoyed a cold one and watched the sun set on the backside of the ridge where I camped.

Happy trails and I look forward to more of the same as the weather turns from spring to summer. :yo:

Interior Rod Rack

I made my own roof rack for my fly rods with just PVC. That way when I go to the lake they are already together and ready to rock and roll. Ill try to post a pic when I can (its in the attic at the moment).

Excellent photos! Looks like a really good trip. Do you have a log of where all you went?

They have this you can always use if you are solo and don't have something around you to strap to in order to get out...

not exactly revolutionary, but it works. the arabs have a pretty interesting way of getting out of sand i learned a long time ago that uses a very similar concept.

its not elegant, but it works.

Did you do a youtube video with your set up?? I swear this looks just like a set up I saw on an overland video on Youtube. Looked like a peaceful trip.

Installed a dash-cam, installed my T4R.ORG sticker momo.75, and oh yeah... started my Toyota Teardrop Runner this weekend.
