found a way to have a removable speaker for my ham setup. routed a quick connect under the console so I can easily remove speaker or console if I have to. I couldn't really find a good spot for my speaker except for this spot. some people put it right under the console storage latch, thought about that too but the quick connect wouldn't fit nicely there. the good thing with this set up is if I ever wanted to return to factory and didn't want a hole in the console, that black piece of trim can be purchased on it's own and it's not expensive vs. replacing the entire silver piece

I used scotch extreme double fastener to secure it. it seems to be ok, but if I don't like it or it doesn't hold well I'll bolt it down and make it permanent. excuse the excess bundle of wire, it's a work in progress. I hadn't seen anyone mount a speaker like this so thought I'd share and maybe inspire someone lol

What is the height off the console? Does it get in the way of using the shifter?

I assume you mean the height of the speaker? the speaker is an icom SP35. and has a dimension below. it's quite compact

Speaker Width: 4.313 in.
Speaker Height: 2.406 in.
Speaker Depth: 1.813 in.

the speaker can rotate on the axis and does not interfere with the shifter. if you grab the shifter really low like at the base, your fingers may come into contact with the front edge of the speaker. I don't know anyone that would shift like that though lol

Added chase lights to the stock roof rail using 3/8 carriage bolt and a L bracket from lowes for under $10.

Picked up the new Mid-Range XL 5x10 from Hiker Trailers. Going to hit up Bentonville, AR for some mountain biking on the way home.

Installed the TRD CAI along with adding USB and HDMI port where the old USB/AUX port was located.

The TRD CAI was bought from BAM as individual parts to save $200 as opposed to just buying the entire system packaged together. Just had to supply my own vacuum tube and zip ties. I also bought a MAF wiring extender Michigan Motorsports so I didn't have cut the wire loom. I got some bright red vacuum tubing to match the TRD silicon parts and lettering. Sounds great combined with Flowmaster Super40 muffler, I know its not going to make it any faster or get better MPGs but it was a cheap, fun install that sounds and looks better.


The Pioneer head unit has a HDMI input I wanted to utilize but didn't want to have wires hanging out of an opening or having to have the glove box open to access them. Also I found a little backend software code that allows you use the HDMI port while the vehicle is in motion. Normally you have be completely stopped and and in park for the HDMI to be active. But now for long road trips the HDMI can be utilized. I do not recommend anyone watch anything while driving, in fact my wife was very surprised that I even did this as bad drivers are a huge pet peeve of mine. But regardless its cool and works as expected.

Got a new toy so decided to make some badges based on some free files found online.

Made a few in CF-nylon, which is pretty overkill for badges, and then made another set in ABS which is probably more reasonable for making badges.

Dropped the 4Runner off at a local shop (that's reputable) for state(PA) inspection. Around 10am the mechanic calls me, tells me I need a new axle seal (not totally surprised, been keeping an eye on it with my regular mechanic friend), said it needs replaced, otherwise it fails the inspection.

He also told me that two wheel studs snapped off (not even cross threaded), and it seemed like the other ones wanted to give up the ghost soon too. So a new wheel bearing it'll be. ($1500 for the total)

Now, I do have just shy of 185k miles on the truck, so I'm not too surprised it needs the axle seal. But I am BEYOND shocked about the wheel studs. Honestly, had I used my regular guy, there's a chance that might've been missed.

Variety is the spice of life (not that sending a wheel into the unknown wouldn't have been spicy too).

Installed this rhino rack xtray I found at a garage sale in my neighborhood. Hardware hit the roof of the car so I opted to drill some holes in the oem crossbars to mount it.

Finished painting and installing my RCI rock sliders. I opted for the 5° with no top plate. I want them to double as a step but I’m not really a fan of the top plate look. VHT roll bar and chassis paint really did these sliders some justice.

In Canada the ham license is the way to go as non licensed radio use recreationally is very limited. you also have much higher power usage allowable in a ham radio set up (aka far distances). you can use ham radios for offroad communications just as you would a CB or GMRS

if you hit repeaters you can reach hundreds of miles away. it's more of a hobby I picked up rather than a necessity for me. I have a marine radio operating license as well for boating

That's a good looking cover! I looked at the web site but I didn't see one for a 4Runner but did see one for a Tacoma, is yours for a Tacoma? or did I miss the one for a 4Runner?
