What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

For the past 2yrs Ive been rocking a homemade rack that I built out of angle and extruded aluminum. It has worked great for everything I needed it for though it lacked in some areas. 1 It made a ton of noise while driving down the road 2 I never could get it to quit leaking inside 3 even though I used extruded pieces for their versatility to mount things too I found it cumbersome and kind of a pain to utilize so I ended up just using the bars to tie around most the time.

So I reached out to Rhino Rack and this is what they came up with.

I installed the Fullsize Pioneer Platform even though I have a sunroof I never use it (I never wanted it in the first place!!) so yes it does cover the sunroof but I wanted the extra room

On the Platform I mounted the following
Full Size Batwing 270 Awning on the Passenger side
2.5 Sunseeker Pull Out Awning on driver side (I'll admit, 2 awning would typically be over kill, but I live fulltime in this thing so Ill take all the shade and cover I can!!)
I used their Traction board mount to mount my 2 pair of ActionTrax

and their sto-it clamps to mount my shovel

I then got a large apache box from harbor freight and mounted it to the platform.

this new setup is AMAZING!!! the apache box allowed me to move all my recovery gear and tools to the top and get more room inside. The traction boards are now very secure and dont require constant tensioning of straps/tie downs. The shovel is the same and no longer rattles around!! The two awnings are great but if I had to only pick one it would be the batwing. Super simple to deploy and put away and provides awesome coverage. Best of all, no more noise and no more leaks!!!

So safe to say the factory tube opening is 3/8"? Just want to confirm as I plan to use a hose to hose coupler with some clamps. Just want to make sure I buy the right size. Thanks!

Painted Overlays and Tinted 3rd Brake Light

So I am trying to sell the new 4Runner or my Wrangler but just could not stand the crome letters on the rear hatch.

Grabbed some black overlays (got two sets just in case) and some old paint, not a perfect match for the front TOYOTA but close enough. Truth is I did not want to pay 25$ for paint when this is good enough.

Now the rest of the stupid crome pops out on the lights and mirrors.

First OC

First oil change on 2023 Pro we got in April. Will definitely either be changing the skid plate to one with an access panel like I did on my Tundra, or changing bolts out for studs/nuts. Did find a strange little metal clip on the oil filter housing. If any of you can tell me what that is/was for, please reply. It didn't seem to do anything, so I just figured it was some sort of assembly completion thing. Never encountered that on any of my other Toyotas over the years.

Out of curiosity I cut the factory oil filter and spread it out to see what all was in there after running on the factory fill. Surprised to find almost nothing but a very few almost microscopic metal flakes. All and all, pretty uneventful.
Refilled and she purred like a kitten.

Simple but oh-so-needed "fix". I installed the brand new Meso Customs volume/skip button tonight, so now the volume is up/down and skip is left/right, instead of the dumb way Toyota built it. Haha. Their youtube video is straightforward about how to get it done, but just a heads up, it is NOT a T25 Torx bit like they state in the video. The T25 worked, but there was slop in the fitment of the bit to the screw, so my guess is that it's a T30. All in all, nice quality of life upgrade

Get the RCI skid plate and the Fumoto valve. Oil changes are so much easier now. I just hook a hose up and drain it right into the container and put a small catch under the filter. I use the MotivX filter drain to get as much out as I can before I pull the housing.

Just an FYI, there is a 27mm Torx bit, so my guess is it's that size and not 30mm.

Found a good parking spot at Tahuya ORV for lunch. First time out with the 285 KO2s on... they did pretty good, very good traction on soft surfaces, but I definitely need the lockers to do anything significant. Truck did great through the technical bits, but struggled on rocks, but that's expected with open diff + ATrac.

I finally have installed my Harris commercial multiband radio and it complements the Yaesu FT-857D radio quite well. The XGM-100M handles Rx/Tx across 136-174, 380-520, 762-870 MHz and Rx only for 30-50 MHz without an external module. That radio will handle both work and "play" frequencies. I can now clean up the cabling in the back with some split loom and tie wraps.

I've got the same problem on mine (2021 TRD ORP). Its midnight black metallic so the wear spot on the back is very evident. Not sure why it happens though. Toyota couldn't put either a gasket there or a thicker washer?!?! We don't even use it to shut the rear hatch either. We always use the little hand cup thingies in the bottom of the rear hatch to close it. Figure the wear is from vibration as it goes down the road?

Has anyone had any luck in getting the dealer to lift a finger for this?

You are going to infect him with the motorcycle disease...very similar to the 4runner strain.
