What did you do to/in your 5th Gen today?!

Wife rolled past 360K miles yesterday on the 2014 SR5. Changed the engine oil the day prior and noticed it has developed an oil leak from the rear main seal. I will talk with our local mechanic on this as far as options. Bottom line the transmission and transfer case need to come out in order to replace the seal. Question is whether we replace the transmission based on age and mileage. The transmission shows no sign of problems. The other question is whether I do the work or let the mechanic do it. I already have a lengthy list of projects and not a lot of time, so I’m leaning towards letting the mechanic do it.

Update: In the interim, I will try some Blue Devil rear main seal stop leak in the engine to see if that will stop what is really a minor leak. If that works, then we’ll drive it until transmission shows signs of giving it up.

Wife struck a pheasant on a recent camping trip to eastern Montana area and cracked the bumper and fog light bezel on her 2023 ORP. No she did not got back and collect the pheasant for dinner. Rick’s auto body in Missoula did a nice job on the repairs.

Edit: Also changed the oil on this 2023 at 26k miles. Ended up going 1K miles over my target.

Nothing fun or exciting, I have had my TE for 11 years and did yet another oil change, probably for the 20th time. It still has all the skid plate bolts.

My son gave me crap about how difficult it was compared to his car. I let him put the skid pate back on after the fun with the oil filter change.

Changed my avatar from winter to summer.

TRD skid plate mounted on studs makes oil changes far easier.

removed prinsu roof rack for the summer. polish and sealed the roof paint, removed kings for rebuild, re installed blown out 6112's. re wired aux LED lights to all be the 2 pin style so it's easier to swap them out.(some are baja designs and one pair is Lasfit) been a solid week of tinkering on this old minivan.

Just ordered up a nice bolt-on panhard height correction bracket.

Checked under the hood and cabin air filter box for mice infestation; first time in about a month. None. Cats, ultrasonic device and dryer sheets still working.

Changed the oil yesterday at 20,176. Oil change history was at 500 miles and then again at 5k and then every 5k miles.

Changed the cabin air filter. It wasn't that dirty, but changed it anyways. It was last changed in Feb 2023 after a 4x4 trip to Death Valley (Escape Trail/Goler Wash/Mengel Pass) when it was REALLY clogged with a very fine dust. Speaking of which, I found a little chunk of a rock from DV stuck in the skid plate.

Checked the engine air filter and it was fine.

That's gotta be a big relief! Those little b*stards can wreak some major damage! $$$ When I took off the engine cover, I noticed that the white batting was chewed away in one corner. It must've happened while at the detail shop when they had my car for the PPF (about a week or so) back in 2021. I haven't seen any other evidence of rats in the engine bay and none in my BMW or in the garage either.

Every night, I notice some of the neighborhood cats roaming around my house hunting. As much as I hate cats, I appreciate their purpose.

Installed a new R/F lower control arm and also the Dr. KDSS panhard bar/trackbar correction bracket that I received Monday. There's not much weight in the 4R so there's still a bit of uphill slope on the bar. I need to add a bunch of weight or hitch up the offroad trailer and taker another look at the slope of the bar. Then I'll see if I need to use the next lower mounting hole.

Installation of the bracket was super easy. The lower control arm took a while.

I ordered extended brake lines quite a while back from Metal Tech 4x4 and finally installed the lines today.

Installed OME BP51

Upgraded to OME BP51’s. They ride incredibly well at factory setting. Haven’t played around with adjustments just yet.Replaced ToyTech ultimate lift kit with icon UCA’s.

Front suspension refresh and upgrades: It was time to pull out the RadFlo coilovers for a cleaning and refresh. I originally bought them in 2010 for my '05 and then transferred them to my '18.

I figured now was the time to fix the low caster numbers with upgraded UCAs. After reading all sorts of posts across the Net I decided I didn't need more than a combination of standard rubber bushings with properly positioned ball joints. My RadFlos are set for 3" of lift and (see pix) my alignment numbers for caster used to be about 2 degrees low. I selected a pair of Rough Country UCAs.

Note 1 the RadFlo preload was backed way off to about 1/2". I also have a set of fender splash shields to install.

Note 2 Rough Country's fitment statement says "only fits 4Runners with 3 of lift" so good to go even though the UCA's are used with other lift numbers. RC makes no published claim I could find about caster numbers but the Net had mentions of a benefit of 3 degrees positive.

Sure enough, the alignment shop easily brought the truck within the Toyota OEM caster range. (See pix)

Next I need to perform an oil change and check the differential fluid condition.

replaced my PCV value today. first time replacing it in 165k miles. the old valve rattle sounded pretty much like the brand new one. leads me to believe with proper oil changes (every 5k miles) these PCV valves don't really go bad. could have left that one on probably for another 150k miles easily. I know a lot of folks do preventative maintenance and replace these every oil change. unless you have a defective valve I don't think that's really necessary

mine did not have any thread sealant on it though from the factory. I've seen youtube videos where people have thread sealant on theirs (I have a 2012)
