Hey guys. Im currently in the market for a 4runner.

I am gonna be checking one out soon just wanted to know if i should be concerned with the frame rust on this? looks like it was previously coated with por15? I could be wrong but wanted some opinions from people who know the chassis better.

I personally wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole, but I also am rust spoiled and live in a desert. The big areas of concern are the rear lower suspension link mounts and probably the diff cover. I'd poke the hell out of everything with a screwdriver and look for holes.

I have never seen a shot of por15 several years down the road, but my guess would be that it wasn't prepped right, as that looks like it is falling off from rust under that coating, but someone else with more experience can chime in too.

You could always pull a durk and do a frame swap if you want it bad enough.

[MENTION=664165]BrenBoss[/MENTION] yes to what JBurt said about the problem areas and bang on everything with a screwdriver or hammer. If there’s no penetrating rust, and the price is right, maybe? Keep in mind these frame can and do rust from the inside out.

But then I’m in the middle of a frame swap so YMMV (literally…) LOL

1. Steering wheels wrap ($12.00 and dressed the interior up big time).
2. AVS window Vents installed.
3. Borla 40665 muffler welded in (I highly recommend)!

Actually want to do Borla in the future, I want to do a Celica steering wheel Swap. Next for me is build a sleeping platform/storage drawers. How much did the window vents run you ?

I'm IN the rust belt and same as the other poster said.. I wouldn't go near that.
My 3rd Gen has been with me since i signed the papers back in 97. My rust is lot more than compared to those of the west coast- but it's not as bad as that.
Maybe i've missed it... what's the history of it?

Here it is with everything level and tires on the ground. At the middle hole setting frame side the PCK seems to be level or a fraction of a degree downward. Not sure if I should run it at the "lowest" setting to dial in a couple degrees of positive angle instead.

Im from Toronto so yes we get alot of salt here on the roads in the winter. The truck is a 99 4runner with 136000km on it 5 speed. Body is clean but the frame was questionable when he sent me those underbody pictures.

Ill probably pass on it as im not a big fan of rust but ive seen that rust is common on these things and figured id ask here first to make sure.

Man o man.. is that a clean and rust free Under carriage. What i wouldn't do for that.

no, I just had the borla muffler behind the stock cat......stock pipes to the back

You like the sound you get out of it? I remember there was a Motorcycle shop that had a machine with audio samples of their pipes and exhausts. Wish they had the same for Mufflers.I
have to look under there and see if my Flange is good.

I did like the sound ( it was on my "totaled" 4runner) it was just a cut and weld to current pipes so flange was not needed, and cut back behind the o2 sensor and add a hanger
I would do it again. Borla 40665 or could have been the 40664. that was back in 2015 and it had no issues with the 5 years I had it

Ok...Sorry to hear about the "totaling" our runners mean a lot to us.
That's why i'm trying to keep mine in one piece and not rust away.

Got tired of looking at that decrepit terminal cover, so saved up 1146 pennies and added a "connector cover" (part # 82821-35020) to my Camelback order for a new radiator, t-stat, hoses and air filter. Got all the work done yesterday and today.

A 99 5 spd is pretty much the most desirable and that’s crazy low mileage. I would be checking that one out for sure.

Agreed, the rust looks bad but good luck finding one in Ontario that isn’t bad. Just be realistic about it and if the price is low enough..... It may well be worth a frame swap if you are up for it.

You’ll wait a long time for another low mile 99 standard to show up. Not saying you should buy it but I’d be getting my ass over to see it.

Replaced LBJs

I can't believe I was so nervous about doing this. With no rust and the right tools it was no more difficult than changing plugs! 1 hour for the left, 30 minutes for the right.

I just wish I would've bought the OTREs to do at the same time. Live and learn.
