What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Since adding the Spiker Engineering Hood Struts I found myself opening the hood more often. And every time I closed it, I couldn't help but notice my WeatherTech bug guard rattling around, held on with those cheap plastic plugs.

Turns out M5 rivnuts work perfectly in the mounting holes and hold that sucker in there but good.

still unable to find a way to make 4Runner idle I did a compression test and have an average of 198 psi. that's the best news i've gotten since he came home with a p0301 trouble code.

i've replaced the plugs, coils, wires, injectors, MAF sensor, both O2 sensors, and he still won't idle without a nasty miss, unless I disconnect the maf sensor, in which case he WILL idle, and sounds good, but apparently at full rich mixture. after the maf sensor the code switched to lean bank 1 sensor 1. after I put a functional sensor in the exhaust he still doesn't idle.

hopefully someone will know what i've missed so i can fix it and go somewhere.

in all of this the check-engine light has not gone on

thanks in advance if anyone happens to catch this...

Do you have the ability to read live data? All parts OEM from a dealer?

the scangauge can read some live data. intake air temp, something from the O2 sensor, maybe trims?. and the water and oil temps.

i have a FSM that i can't search. it will help when I find the wiring connections that tie those sensors together, plus whatever is missing, to the ecm. do you happen to know the page in the manual that has those wiring diagrams?

thanks for the help

The 881s and all 4 5100s arrived last night, the (legit) 906s this morning. Was very grateful I paid Wheeler's to assemble the fronts. Painfully hot today in Sacramento but everything went smoothly.

I'm looking at about 22" hub to fender all around, except front right which is sitting at 23". I'm guessing/hoping that'll settle down after some more driving. You can see from the image that I did indeed install them on the correct sides!

That AC Delco/KYB combo was a huge improvement but damn, this feels like a different 4Runner.

What year is your 4Runner? There aren't any wiring diagrams in the FSM. You need an EWD (Electrical Wiring Diagram).

What year is your 4Runner?

That's the key question, since much of the wiring is different for different years. Here are some links I've gathered over the years:

'98 - Dropbox - 1998 4Runner Electrical Wiring Diagram EWD319U - Simplify your life

'00 - Update your browser to use Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Sites, Slides, and Forms - Google Drive Help

'01-02 - Complete 4Runner Service Manual 1996-2002.pdf - Google Drive

The last one has very comprehensive EWD's, but may not be applicable for earlier years.

Here's a 2000 EWD if you want to add it to your collection: Dropbox - 2000 4Runner Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD383U) - Printable - Simplify your life

technically this was "yesterday" but I went ahead and replaced my hood latch assembly, installed a new bottom trim piece for my back hatch and installed a new (used) grill.

i can read some live data. but not the A/F Ratio, which i think is what's out of kilter. some parts are oem. some oem parts are from dealers. . . . some parts come out of junk boxes. because swapping parts is a good way to troubleshoot variables. so is the VOM. so is the continuity tester. NONE of those things can replace the input of an experienced mechanic who has been here and done that.

Thanks for your response.

BTW, for some reason I am having trouble troubleshooting the forum, posts seem to disappear, I suppose I don't have it set up right. It's almost fun because it seems timed to reinforce my dyslexic episodes. But me and RunRun are working thru this together. And his sense of humor syncs to mine i guess.

Good Night,

Got the NWF Eco-crawler case doubler project finished up. Last step was to handle the triple stick shifter boot situation. I'd already grabbed 3 cute little shifter boost from the PnP. IIRC, Chevy Impalas of a certain age with bucked seats - they had a small boot with material that matches the Toyota boot pretty well. So I sewed three of those together, then cut out the single transfer case boot and sewed in the triple-boot. Pretty easy. Underneath that I got some cheap car washing sponges and cut a slit in one for the triple transfer case shifters, and one hole in the other for the transmission, and shoved them down into the tunnel on top of the drivetrain, sealing all the heat, air and sound off.

With both LO ranges engaged, it's very slow. A combined ratio of 6.6:1. Took it on a roughly 30 mile drive including some highway speeds (75 mph) and no vibrations, bad noises.

Took off my stock rear bumper and replaced the body mounts with the Sonoran Steel ones to prepare for my 4X rear bumper. Broke one body mount bolt and the others needed heat to come out because of rust. Luckily the broken one came out with some vice grips. Ordered 4 new bolts to replace them.

Bought yesterday but primer and painted today a skid row transfer case skid and a Lil skips gas tank skid …got them off a 4Runner that was originally built by RedDragonATL unfortunately whoever had it before had completely destroyed it

Cut out the rear right seat support.

I was originally thinking I'd put a slide out fridge there. Then I started thinking that if I was in a parking lot, it would be really difficult to pull out. And, the size was more restricted due to the angle and transmission tunnel than I was thinking, so it would have only been a 20L fridge. Instead, I've purchased a drawer fridge which will fit in the rear under the sleeping platform.

Now I'm thinking that I'll just use that area for water storage since it is fairly low. We occasionally do long trips ~2 weeks off grid, so we carry 28 gallons of water for 2 people. Boy does she sag fully loaded! Someday I'll get to upgrading the suspension...
