What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

My wife got me this magsafe iPhone mount that attaches to the vent, which has been great, but there were a few issues:
 1. The usb and audio cords were in the way and unsightly.
 2. Some times when offroad the whole thing would fall off
 3. Wanted it placed a bit higher in my field of view.
I drilled a hole and mounted it directly into the top of the center console trim. The existing bolt had a hole, so I mounted it with a pin instead of a nut in the back. I was a little worried about a nut backing itself off and the mount getting loose.

Then I drilled a few more holes to snake the wire behind the dash so it was clean. The holes for the usb and audio cables are hidden in the top of the cubbies, and the hole at the mount is hidden behind the mount itself.

It is now super secure and a few inches higher—very happy with how it turned out! Yes, I now have holes in my dash trim, but I'm scheming to one day replace both vents with a touchscreen, so that part would be cut out anyways. Also, this trim has some damage from the stereo being stolen 5 years ago, so I will eventually grab a stock backup from the junkyard.

Finally replaced the fender with a white one. I actually had 2 beige ones, one with the limited flare and one SR5 that was on the car. I couldn't get around to painting the limited one until the weather warmed up and.... it's done. Not perfect, but not embarrassing anymore. Next is to weld up the coastal offroad bumper and this thing will really look nice. The white wheels look great.

I (didn't) needed something to do....
I'd already added a tall center console to the '96 some time ago, but found one that was a better color match at the junkyard so pulled it and- on a whim- grabbed the rear heater assembly to mess around with too. The lines in the newer 3rd gens appear to be made out of aluminum, not steel as the earlier ones were. The tees are still steel, will have to keep an eye on them.

Assembly and hard lines are in, have some of the hoses, waiting on 8mm coolant line to finish the plumbing. I'd already bought the heater control valve as a maintenance item awhile ago.

Nice score, I want to get those too! My understanding is that they are not aluminum, but stainless - even better :).

The 90 deg coolant hoses in the back have different diameters on each end, naturally. You can probably make it work with a single diameter hose, but the OEM ones are pretty cheap and still available.

It's pretty easy stuff to bend...interesting that it could be stainless, I'll have to change my post.
Good to know about the hoses, may go that route for the aux heat to pipe, thanks!

Supposedly you can tell by scratching it - although I'm sure you won't want to do that.

And here are the hoses you need, 2 and 3 in the diagram (I added the part number in the table)
We'll let octanejunkie scratch his when he pulls it off :D
and
One less thing for me to look up, thanks!

Did a drain and fill on my rear diff. Out came AMSOIL 80W-90 and in went SuperTech full syn 75W-90. Also stripped my front diff drain bolt and attempted to use an extractor set to remove said stripped drain bolt with negative results.

yes those front diff drains can be an absolute pain in the arse. Had one, no problem....a 2nd that I could not budge and stripped and gave up. Now my current one is due and not looking forward to it. Have read that if you clean them well, heat them up real good, they will come out. Have read of people having to work real hard and several tricks to get out. And have read of people switching to the lexus drain plug after finally getting out the old one. ( lexus uses a socket instead of an allen head)

if you do a search you will find many ways/tricks to get that drain plug out. I believe even timmy ( MTBTM) shows how he did a stuck one on you tube

Yes indeed. There’s a guy over on TacomaWorld who’s local to me, and I’m going to go over to his place and he’s going to assist me with this. He’s got a welder and we plan to weld the hex bit to the bolt so it will turn. I definitely look forward to seeing that thing come out. I also went ahead and purchased the Lexus bolts a few days ago and they look nice for sure. Will definitely make future drain and fills much easier.

The one time used semi dull cold cheisel and 3# brick hammer, I bust them loose about once a year since, preventative maint I call it.

Investigating why I got a couple of drips of gas on the ground when refueling my secondary/aux gas tank last time, and I discovered the 2" 90 degree bend coupler has split in the middle of the bend. Despite it being bought specifically as a fuel filler neck hose, apparently it couldn't handle being around gas for a year. :(

Extra Long 2" 90deg Molded Oil, Gasoline Diesel Fuel Filler Hose Elbow

I sure would have thought it would work as a fuel filler hose.

I bought a Gates replacement. Hopefully it will last a little longer.

I was reading about the Extended AC Drain mod octanejunkie posted. Seemed like a quick and easy task in this triple digit heat. Picked up some 3/8 ID hose from HD and then discovered I didn't have the metal drain (because it wasn't on the '96 MY).

Figured at a buck and change I'd just order the part for a '98, see if it worked (for the record, it worked like a charm)

Remembered I still needed an OEM radiator cap.

As long as I'm here, let's throw some YZZD3s in the cart.

How long has it been since I replaced the air filter? Couldn't hurt to have a spare.

Oh, key blanks - I've been meaning to replace the generic keys the PO provided 10 years ago.

And that shift lock cover I lost in '14. Might as well throw that in.

Why am I still surprised when a $1.79 part ends up costing me $70?

NOT a fan of amsoil...

Thanks for the part numbers and pretty diagram Spiker Engineering
Went ahead and picked up the aux heater core rubber lines from Toyota

and got that job over with.

Also replaced headlight bulbs (nothing fancy), front sway bar links (2nd gen rear), and washed the winch line.
