Adjusted the cheap led bulbs. Left one a bit lower to avoid blinding. I parked my rig in road and drove by in wife's truck to see how bright and they didn't seem to blind me at all. When I first turned them on wife freaked and said this had to be illegal. Ha. So far no one flashed me and if I left halogen brights on i got immediate flashes.

Adjusted the valves on the 3RZ. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be! Only the two front exhaust valves were out of spec about 3 thousands, pretty amazing after 225k miles.

Here's one of the new shims going in, the holder is in place to press the bucket down.

Spent most of the morning doing a bit of preventative maintenance on our new to us 4Runner. Drained and replaced fluids in front and rear diff as well as the transfer case. Thanks to Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum - View Profile: mtbtim for his youtube videos that explained the process very well.
Plan to continue with maintenance items such as transmission drain and refill next week (didn't have time this go around) as well as replacing the broken antenna when it arrives tomorrow.
I have to say that this site is awesome and it has been a pleasure researching modifications and items to look out for on these 3rd gen 4Runners.

Today I inspected the rear suspension. I always thought my rear sag and constant "bottoming out" were due to old Springs and shocks. That is only part of the story. As it turns out I have no coil bump stops. They just aren't there. My license plate has some faded lettering the reads "Island Paradise Tours". I think 15 to 20 years ago this truck was fitted with airbags and towed a flatbed trailer converted to hold tourist passengers for tours around the island. I've only seen one operating now. Now they use flat bed trucks with cabins built on top of them to cart tourists around. To me the springs appear to be squashed. This picture is taken unloaded. I guess I can add bump stops to my list of stuff to get along with Springs and shocks.

And a needle scaler! How do your rear lower control arm mounts look?

I removed the rear cargo carpet and padding under it. It was soaking wet (somehow) and smelled like large dogs.

I also removed the stock running boards!

The early 4runners didn't have the bumpstops in the coils. My 96 4x4 did not have them from the factory. Not sure if it was model dependant or build time. Your 96 likely never had them.

What products did you end up using for the rust blocker, frame and wheel paint. I have similar surface rust and would like some suggestions on products to use.

His frame bump stops ate also gone. The rubber looks to be torn off.

If your truck had the recall done than they added coil cones on older 4runners. My 96 had cone stops when i bought it.

Did the spark plugs. The rear cylinder on passenger side was seized. When backing out it tightened up and stopped. Sprayed with pb blaster and backed it in and out over and over. Ended up using 1/2" ratchet and prayed to toyota gods it wasn't misthreaded or broke. It came out and all was good.

The really clean tipped plug smelled like gas. Wonder if that's my misfire. Noticed high rpm misfire but no CEL. Time to test drive.

No...that is the low beam. I would be surprised if there was any change from low to high that was visible.
