Condolences and best wishes to your family and everyone affected by the loss of your friend.

Love how you've got your family pics with you in the truck, that's awesome.

Life is so fragile my friends, please cherish those you love with every waking breath you have.

I'm sorry to hear about your buddy man. I've been there more times than I care to remember.

I quoted that part of your post because truer words are hard to come by. It's painfully easy to forget that though. So thank you for the reminder.

Washed, restocked the ARB fridge...and spent a little over a grand with LCE. 4th of July sale had 10% off so I moved on 7th injector and their 160amp alternator. I guess I'd better get that trans-go shift kit put in so I don't nuke the trans outta this thing. :car:

Bought it! Got the truck on Monday and spent the holiday doing a little PM and inspection on the new project. Got a 1997 SR5 3.4 Auto 4WD with 244k on the odometer. Already passed state inspection (so tires, brakes, ball joints, suspension were looked at) and I was really happy to see the truck appears to have been well maintained. Locally owned and from the carfax averaged 6k a year for the last 15 years. No lift, no hitch, interior in good shape, and no rust damage anywhere except chrome bumpers.

The things I got knocked out:

- Filters: oil, air, fuel
- Fluids changed: oil, front diff, rear diff, xfer
- Fluids checked: coolant, PS, brake, transmission all appear good
- Cleaned: MAF
- Belts: appear less than a year old
- Coolant: checked, good condition
- Radiator: mfr date stamped on top from 2016 and hoses were brand new
- Lubed: all grease fittings on drive shafts. I did have to retap and install a new one on the double U joint behind the xfer case. Also found a missing fitting on the front prop shaft U joint by the front diff.
- Inspected: pulled the timing belt cover and visually it appears in good shape to me:

Couple questions for anyone who wants to chime in:
1. Should I plan on a timing belt / water pump job?
2. Where can I order a missing grease fitting for the front universal?
3. What did I miss?

1. yes TB and WP is a good thing to do
2. .... I'd ask the dealer for the # then amazon or 'camelbacktoyota.com parts
3. replace those ball-joints... you don't know how long ago or with what they were replaced with... google 'lower ball joint fail'... go to the pic's... and you'll see 3rd gen 4runners... others cars had them too, but it seems these 3rd gens are common.

I'd love a fridge. But god damn are they expensive. I bought a ozark trail Walmart cooler for $150. It's like a Yetti but cheaper. Maybe.... down the road I'll get one. But I like my truck space also. So you have to sacrifice somewhere

Received my Cooper AT3 265/75/16s from Discount Tire. Will end up costing me $323 for four tires after the mail-in rebates. Sorry Unner, I really wanted those rims but an ignition switch, two batteries and a water pump for one of my boats said otherwise....

I would post a pic or two but of course Photos%$t has my account by the balls.......

Yea ARB is pretty proud of them for sure. My 4r is a "work vehicle" for tax purposes. So between group buy discount and tax write off I talked myself into it. Definitely worth every penny since I'm out and about 10-12 hours a day. Nothing like a cold drink/snack on a hot day. I figured it would make me smile more often than a front locker.

Sent from my iPhone, so probably some stupid typos and autocorrects

Swapped Sunroof

Got a 98 Limited V6 w/ e-Locker in Feb with 274k miles, for $1600.

Meant as a dog-hauler/vacation/hunting truck, just to use a few times a year. I hope to get 2 or 3 years out of it, max. It has rust, but nothing serious. Now my 14yo daughter has begun lusting after it and picking names. My wife calls it "her truck". Sigh.

So then... since Febuary:
 • Lawdy it stank. Got it cleaned, first thing. Hoo, it was bad.
 • Parking brake bell cranks were gone, cable was snapped; Replaced them.
 • It was throwing a rear 02 sensor code; replaced that which fixed the code.
 • Driver floorboard was soaked; Pulled it apart, let it dry, cleared out the sunroof drain tubes, RTV'd the firewall grommet, have kept it out of the rain just in case.
 • Trans hadn't been serviced in 4 yrs/70k miles; did a gentle flush/replace.
 • Replaced the oil in the front/rear diff and transfer case.
 • MAF sensor was gunked over - cleaned it.
 • Rear spoiler mounts were gone; got used replacements.
 • Dash cupholders sucked; got a 99 center console.
 • Factory radio/cd wouldn't eject; got a used Kenwood with BT.
 • PO only had 1 valet key and fob; got new keys, ebay fobs, programmed so locks work, but that's all - noticed the PO replaced the doors all the way around at some point, so none of the keys operate those locks :frusty:
 • Drained the radiator to check for gunk - didn't find any, flushed w/ distileld water, replaced coolant with Toyota red.
 • Replaced the 98 frosted headlights with 99 clears. Much better at night now.
 • Replaced the broken fog lights with LED pods.
 • Replaced the broken fog light switch with an Ebay look-alike.
 • Suctioned out the steering fluid & replaced with ATF.
 • Every rubber boot in the front end was shredded. Water & Dirt poured out of the pinion boots over the ITREs when I squeezed them; Replaced the ITREs, OTREs, pinion boots, stabilizer links, LBJs/bolts.

This week:
Had a garage do the UBJs because I couldn't budge the castle nuts - not with an impact, not with a breaker bar, not with a 2-ft pipe over the end of the bar. Also had the alignment done because of the LBJs & TREs I just did myself.

Got her back and started exploring the sunroof that only opened 2 inches. Found a good writeup on YT, removed the glass and found a ton of tree seeds, hair & gunk in the tracks from above. Cleaned it up, sprayed white lithium all over in the tracks, but still couldn't make it budge more than 2 inches, and somehow lost the tilt that had been working.

Dropped the header, found a ton more tree seeds. Dropped the sunroof assembly, started disassembling one bit at a time. Soaked the copper tubes/cables in degreaser and got one side to slide out - the plastic wrap over the cable was shredded in 1 spot.

Couldn't get the other side to move at all, so there was my problem. Eventually I ran the pipe over a torch a bit to try loosening things - and it worked, but the cable that finally came out was destroyed: plastic wrap gone, rusted, mis-shapen. The copper tube also bent as I was fighting the cable out.

Yesterday I found a full replacement assembly in a junk yard 7 minutes from my house: paid $150, glass, motor and all. Bolted right in, got the 14yo to help me put the header back in, and now she has I have a working sunroof.

Next up will be a trans cooler & trans temp gauge. This was meant to be a "low-budget", "disposable" truck and it's turning into something else... gotta space the jobs out a bit more. :)

Crap, I left out that I did the oil changes in the transfer & diffs.

If I had a nickel for every time I thought, "This time I'll take pictures!" and bail out because "Gah, I don't want this grime from my hands all over my phone" after I get started... Well, I'd still only have about 60 cents. :)
