What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Damn that's awful news. When I went to the Overland Expo I took a course on "Roll Over Prevention and Recovery" but to be honest with you it was more about recovery and preparing for the roll over than prevention. Oh, and assessing and treating the victim.

Three things really stuck out in that course.

• Never stick your hand out to try and stop the rollover (natural reaction of course). Just cross your arms against your chest.
• Shut the engine off as soon as you know the roll over is inevitable. This will save the motor.
• Finally, roll down all of your windows because you WILL break some glass and the rescue team will have to drag you out the back window.

Just out of curiosity, did you do any of these things? I know if I didn't go to the Expo I would have done the opposite. I would have tried to stop it and fight it all the way down to the dirt, would never have thought about the windows, and the motor would have coughed and sputtered and died on me.

1 - I agree with not sticking hands out of the vehicle, but not sure I agree with crossing my hands on my chest. I grabbed the "o-sh__" handle with my left and braced against the roof with my right.

2 - I always try to drive my way out of it first. Then if that fails I turn it off. It was off before we landed. But I did try reverse really quick. If his locker had been wired up I might have pulled it out - might...

3 - Love the last one. We had the windows down already. "Wait, stop the roll. My windows are not down yet." Sorry, but 99% of the time you will not have time to roll them down.

I got going on my manual hub conversion/front suspension refresh today:

Gusseted, powder coated uprights, manual hubs, new bearings and stuff, Spec upper control arms (welded ball joint receiver). Etc, etc.

Using some fresher lower control arms/bushings.

Fixed two tiny things today.
1) Clutch pedal torsion spring was removed awhile back. I installed a return spring after seeing another member post the part #. Thanks whoever that was a week or two back. Just a little return assistance for the master cylinder.

2) Got employee pricing on the SR5 sport flare "pad" from Tacoma's so they stop rubbing into my paint. Got 2 front pieces and 2 rears from a 99 Tacoma. The rear pieces have a molded section that doesn't fit a rear 4runner flare obviously. So I cut them and still had enough material to cover the whole flare assembly on the rear. The only prior mention I had seen before, was ordering 5 front kit's, this route saved me $16 by using 2 front ad 2 rear. Cost was $65 for 4 packages, stupid expense, but I feel better now.

noticed an oil leak on the new acquisition- 97 4runner. Saw that people say the valve covers are a common spot so I want to check those regardless, but with the recent photobucket hosting issues I can't find a good walkthrough on how to do the job of even tightening the bolts. Any ideas?

Welp, bust out the credit card today. Ordered up a full set of skid plates and a rear bumper from Savage! Home page says the order will take 1-2 weeks to build, so I'm hoping to have the new goods in three weeks or so....

Installed a set of sport flares, and a T4R antenna mount. Also went over the front bumper, tow hitch and plastic rear bumper cover with bed liner.

Worked on my tire carrier. Didn't get it finished, but knew that was going to happen. Waiting on the wheel to come in to see exactly where I'm going to mount it. Oh and 2 gas cans.

When finished would you consider building a 2nd one? and what price would it be??

I've been having a clicking noise whenever I turn the wheels, and I can feel it beneath my feet on the driver side. I was going back and forth on what the root cause could have been, but I think I correctly diagnosed it! I replaced the steering rack guide with a new OEM one, and the clicking is gone, and the steering feels better too. I didnt have a 24mm hex bit, nor did I want to buy one, so I got a 16mm bolt and 2 16mm nuts since they have 24mm heads! Worked like a charm.
