What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Running into issues with the paperwork on this '97 Limited that I want to buy. I knew that it was being sold as a 'salvage' vehicle, I wasn't too concerned with that. The vehicle is in PA, I'm a MD resident. I've spoken with the Maryland State Police and fully understand whats involved with getting a 'salvage vehicle inspection' prior to getting the title work done.

The seller is throwing me a curve ball by claiming that he/ his dealership doesn't have the title, only the certificate from the towing company auction where he got it. He's claiming that he can't get a salvage branded title, that I need to have a salvage inspection done in PA so that I can get a branded title in my name, then take the title to the MD State police salvage inspection so that I can get it transferred into a MD title w/ a salvage brand. I'm smelling a rotten fish, but since I have no experience with this kind of headache, if anyone knows for sure how things work, and could chime in to clarify, I'd be greatly appreciative.

So a salvage title car (without a salvage title) located in another state, that you presumably haven’t seen in person? How cheap is this thing to even warrant this question? This is sketch level Roadkill.

I don't understand why you would bother with this whole salvage title bullshit neither. I mean, it's your right to get ripped off, just seems sad. No shortage of 4Runners on the market.

I've seen the vehicle, it exists. It's right at the point of being at the 'right price' for my budget to get it running/up to date on maintenance and not be buried financially in it. I could very realistically only be $3500 into it with the replacement engine, new rear axle seals/brngs LBj and a few other items. It's also not a rust bucket. $3500 for most 4runners around here gets you a turd that needs $5K worth of work and is rotting away. Price means nothing in regards to the quality of vehicle around here. Way too many wholesalers/ used car managers from new dealers posing as "owners", trying to unload piles of rusted shee-it onto the general public. It's absolutely sickening what goes on around MD/PA area for these vehicles.

The thought has crossed my mind, the temptation/challenge is strong though.

Salvage title, I wouldn't even take the time to piss on the paperwork if it were something that I wanted to flip and make a few $$ on. This is appealing to me because it's a solid chassis/body on the cheap. It's not like I need another project right now, but this could be a good opportunity to get a 'runner on the cheap that leaves enough "space" in a perceived value to do a few mods to it and not be buried in it.

I appreciate the feedback. If it were someone else asking the same question, I'd chime in and offer the advice that you guys are putting out there. I haven't committed to anything yet, I won't hear back from this guy until sometime tomorrow. I might decide to just avoid potential headaches by that time.

Replaced the rear transmission mount.
Discovered two of the four lower bolts were less than ideal.
...So we're not finished.

Picked up 4 tundra split spoke rims for snow tires...now I need to figure out how to get them painted without a heated garage and wet weather in the 40's...

you could buy my 6 spoke old 4 runner wheels with mounted snows, good for another season, in stock silver for 100, only a few miles form corvallis

I appreciate that, but I already have new Cooper M+S's ready to go on, and I love the split spoke... Sort of treating them as an investment for when my current rubber needs replacement and the snow tires wear out, will make a swap.

Hey, looks really good! How did you straighten it out?

The bumper metal is actually fairly thin, so easy to work with. I put it chrome side down onto some 2x12 chunks, and pounded onto the dents from the inside using a short length of a 2x4 and a sledge hammer.

If I ever get ambitious enough to do better, I'd use some body work dollies with the rounded shapes, but I've got too many more exciting things to deal with in the nearterm.

Weekend? It should be about 1 hour if you already have an aux box. 2 hours if your adding the aux box as well. lol
Weekend is an exaggeration, but I wanna convert my marker lights to flash with the turn signals, install these fogs, upgrade one of my aux plugs to full time hot, stage my big 3 upgrade and maybe install a light bar.

I also have to pull my front fender and bumper mounts out, go to IKEA with a friend, hang a TV and a Besta cabinet, wire a stereo and program a remote. So that's my weekend, lots or wiring, along with some 9-ball and beers.

Next weekend: valve cover gaskets and PCK install. Christmas day: LCA bushings, sway bar bushings and steering rack bushings.

What's you got going? Lol

I have to drive my wife to the airport tomorrow and pick her up on Monday. In between is wide open. I busted my elbow pretty hard Tuesday at work so climbing is out for the weekend. I might just have to go do some wheeling.

It's nice to have a rig that's had everything done to it. Nothing to work on until the lockers this spring. Lots of free time. lol

Took my new-to-me '98 LTD to the wash today.

A little backstory: I've never had a vehicle with a retracting antenna before my 4Runner.

Guess who doesn't have a retracting antenna anymore?

I read a few threads here about replacement, but does anyone know the Taco year-models that would fit appropriately, or is it simply safe to assume a 2nd gen (or '98) Taco antenna would fit?

Maybe Home Depot if there's time?
