What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

FWIW my $15 knockoff cable and burned copy of techstream from amazon worked just fine for me and was super handy in diagnosing some stuff on my LX 100 series.

Plugged it into the 4runner and had no errors or issues either. That said, I didn't look into fuel trim, but it connected without issue and let me go through the available systems.

Maybe re-install the software?

It turned out being a problem with the newest update of Techstream. I tried an older version and it worked fine, nothing wrong with the cable it ECM.

Kuhmo Crugen HT51 265/70-16 - $470 OTD

Put a new set on the '99 Limited a few weeks ago for $450 OTD. Went with Kuhmo's Crigen 265's, a 70,000 mile tire that rivals Michelins.

Here's the breakdown:

(4) 265/70-16 Kuhmo Crugen HT51 All Season from Tirebuyer.com: $442.86 (local distributor drops tires to selected local tire mounting service Firestone)
Mount & Balance at local Firestone - $58 (kept the old Michelin LTX tires)
Used Tire Store - sold the old skins for $35
TOTAL: ~$470

The Crugens are a well rated tire - dry and wet traction is excellent, pretty quiet and offer good control.

I got both LBJ's, new NAPA CV axles and a right outer TRE installed ( 555 brand). The parts store didn't have a left OTE in stock today, but thankfully that side wasn't too bad. The right side was scary, as well as the condition of the LBJs. If I had know that things were that bad, I would have had AAA tow it to the shop.

I'll go back and do the left side OTE after the holiday then get an alignment. It drove much better going home tonight, so I know that it was money and time well spent.

My faith is restored. lol

After you posted up the other day about it not connecting I got curious if Torque Pro could read fuel trims. Turns out it can. I really need to spend more time playing with that app.

Perfect timing to have the wiper arms and grill under windshield repainted.

Same thing happened to me when I painted mine.... rain for days

Got my ARB bumper installed along with the Rigid Fog LED pods which are DOT compliant.

Didn't do it myself as I'm not super handy, don't have the right tools nor a garage that can accommodate my 4Runner (think good rack plus RTT haha). It's not the kind of stuff I was gonna do in my driveway while it's cold and rainy. Not with my lack of experience at least :/

What did I do today?

Well... I gave her a reeeeeal good bath. Then I took her in to the shop to thaw out (it's -25C here today and not expected to warm up until next year). Then I was wrapping some presents, and saw a new bottle of Chemical Guys wax. So I also gave the truck a quick wax by hand.

Then I noticed how bad my roof rack looks. Pulled the little crossbars off and gave them a quick hit of flat black paint as they were weathered.

Then I went and got some gas, and took a few "seasonal" pictures!

I just got a rear drivers side grab handle from another 97 that was being parted out locally. As previously mentioned the screw bosses and under the headliner. Just made two small cuts with and exacto knife and then screwed them in. Im 6'1" and dont hit my head getting in but i can see that happening if youre any taller.

Nice! Thanks for the tips guys. Really would love to have that handle there.

Looks good! Must do mine also, what paint and prep did do?
Sanded with 220, cleaned with grease remover. On metal parts o used the etching primer (about 5 very light coats). On top of primer about 4-5 coats of black and plastic has about 6 very light coats of black. I didn't sand after because the paint dried so smooth I didn't want to mess it up. It took half a can of primer and 1 full can of black.

Installed Whiteline LCA bushings, Energy steering rack and sway bar bushings and roasted a bone-in pork roast.

Marked my cams like this, no problem getting them back on those marks. Now I'm off to get an alignment this morning.

The old LCA bushings popped out with ease using the sock Toyota bottle jack and a torch. The cam adjusters came out with no fuss, looked brand new. The steering rack sits well on a milk crate once disconnected, no need for a jack or tie downs (unbolting the PS hose clamp under the batter is key) and the pork roast was amazing.

Glad to hear bush job went well! Roast looks realll good. Marking adjusters and loosening the power steering hoses makes the job a lot easier. I did some bushings this summer with OE jack. Out of all the people and vid's that use this method, has anyone measured or noticed the amount of deflection/spreading of horns takes place during the process? I did, I stopped at 1" +- spread, LCA did spring back, used different method.
Did you notice this when doing yours? Mine were rust free also.

Zero deflection, but probably because I varied the popular procedure.

1. Light preload on the bushing with the OE jack, make the bushing flex outward and stop

2. Heat bearing pocket of LCA with torch until it just starts to smoke (rubber smell)

3. Push bushing out with jack.

Easy peasy japaneasy

If mine were at all rusty I would have probably been weary of driving them out dry like that without soaking them first.

They was minor rust in the LCA pocket. It I cleaned it up with a wirewheel on a drill and packed it with grease when I pushed the new bushings in. So much grease.

For sure, the procedure is pretty cut n dry. For whatever reason mine were tight.
Wondering more so on how many other folks run into my case.

Easy peasy japaneasy.

I welded up a jig on my steel bench to keep LCA from spreading, 15 min later
boom chucka lucka!

I'm on a roll today, woohoo!

Finished the '99 bezel swap into my '97, pretty happy with how it turned out:

Stepped into the 21st century by installing Homelink above the headliner (funny thing is I spent more on the can of spray paint for the trim than on the Homelink unit itself):

And last but not least, my favorite type of project - 5 minutes, $3, and endless satisfaction every time I get inside:

Testing My Fix for the Slip Yoke Thunk

While driving to a few clients locations, I was taking care to evaluate my recent slip yoke disassembly, cleaning, and re-grease with Ford's XG-8 PTFE grease. Today was driving miles 50-100 after the slip yoke job. Still a bit early, but it hasn't come back yet. Fingers crossed it holds up for many months to come.

I need to stop looking at this thread 'cause I keep getting ideas for new projects faster than I can cross off the ongoing ones!

Nonetheless, today I did a few more things.

Drained and refilled front and rear diffs and transfer case with Mobil 1 75W-90:

Installed a new "upgraded" ('00+) steering rack guide, as part of my so-far futile efforts to reduce highway vibration:

Installed a magnetic cell phone mount:

Interesting, do you think the mount will hold?
