What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

UPDATE: Was getting 10-11mpg unloaded daily driving it prior. Probably 75% fwy25% city.

Yesterday I got 12mpg towing my ~1,200 trailer 80-85mph into a headwind for 170 miles. So far so good.

Found my fan clutch was permanently locked up, ie engaged and spinning 100% of the time. That would explain the crappy mileage and louder engine whine lately.

I had been having terrible tire wear issues and really sloppy/wandering steering and has had a pretty bad clunk. Last weekend I cleaned up, re-greased and re-torqued my steering rack guide bushing. This probably fixed 80% of my steering problems and It drives so much better. I think I need to finally replace my inner/outer TRE, as far as I know they all have 265k miles on them...

If you have high millage, i highly recommend doing this. Only took about 30 minutes taking my time, well worth it!

The island brake chronicles continue.

Finally changed out the brake master cylinder. On the first pressure test i heard a loud "POP", no pedal pressure after that. I blew a hole in the right rear brake hard line. Fashioned a temporary plug to get me to the auto shop and it passed my test drive. Oddly enough brakes feel better with the plug than when I purchased her 2 years ago.

I now have a permanent brake light on the dash. I assume I need to move over the sensor from the old master cylinder.

New shoes for the Mule! Brand new Trail Off Road wheels and tires. These will be my “daily” wheels and the old 5 Star rims will have 255/85/R16 KM2s for the trails.

These easily clear the Tundra Brake Upgrade.

Power Lock Freak Out

A few times in the last few weeks my power locks started spazzing out after I started the car, locking and unlocking on their own. Well shiz, now what?

I don't have keyless entry and always enter via the driver door using my key but I also noticed my driver side lock cylinder was tough to turn and wouldn't turn ccw to lock the doors. Then it occurred to me, I can't see the cylinder position once the key is removed. Sure enough the cylinder was sticking and not returning to center, which must have been tripping the lock actuator, so I got me some graphite powder and spooged it in the driver side lock cylinder and boom. Smooth like butter.

Now the cylinder turns easily in both directions and returns to center after use and the power locks have behaved since; so that was an easy fix. Lol

Worked on this project last weekend before I had surgery and couldn’t do anything

Funny thing is I was doing some spring cleaning and found the box that had my retrofit source kit from a few years ago. I completely forgot I pirchased it for an old vehicle I had.

Only issue I’m having is that the drivers beam doesn’t seem as bright as the passenger.

It’s nice to be able to see at night again.

Picked up a set of LC 8 wraps from another forum member this weekend

Nice. I put a set of 8.75 wrap lx 450 springs in a couple of weeks ago. It was a PITA but thats only because i was doing it without a set of coil spring compressors. So they're awesome. I will be putting some black tokikos on soon.

Finally got around to installing my panhard correction kit from Keith. And man i wish i did it sooner. The runner drives much better now that the rear axle is properly centered. Also pressed in some new superflex bushings in a straight second hand panhard. Now i just need to get around to cleaning up the "west coast patina" (surface rust) and paint it all up.

I'm driving around in front wheel drive again. I pulled the rear DS and found one of the UJ's in the double cardan that went bad. It's extremely notchy as it cycles. I found a seemingly good rear DS at the pick and pull today, so I thought maybe I'd get lucky and just mount it up and be dome with the vibrations. Nope- it turns out the JY shaft is about 1.75" longer than the one that came out of my 'runner.

My next move is to drop them both off at a local driveshaft shop and see if they can use the double cardan guts from the JY driveshaft in the shaft for my rig, or else maybe just shorten the JY shaft. I have a feeling that isn't going to be cheap no matter what way the use to fix this mess.

Yes those are the 5125 billies i got with my toytec ultimate lift. Slowly phasing that lift out and upgrading. Ome 890 have been swapped for 8.75 wrap lc coils. Later this week I'll swap the 5125 billies for some black tokikos i picked up today and later in the summer i will swap my toytec coilovers for a pair of kings.

I've been getting a check engine light for my knock sensors, so I started pulling everything apart so I could replace them. I was not expecting this when I lifted off the intake manifold...

Looks like my water bypass pipe is leaking from the bolt-on attachment. All the dried up coolant just crumbles away, so tomorrow I'll clean it up with a shop vac and then reseal the attachment, which I was going to do anyway because that pipe is blocking the knock sensors. Could be worse I guess.

What did you do to your 3rd gen today?

Got some weathertech floor mats and installed some redline hood struts

Finally found some beadlocks that have the same backspace as my Level 8 MK6 wheels, so I ordered them for my offroad set of tires

Finished installing a new aftermarket rear bumper to replace the mostly rust original. We'll see how it lasts but for $100 I didn't and don't expect much but surprisingly enough fitment is pretty good.

Somehow not one bolt broke on the rear but I made up ground there by snapping at least half of the M10 bolts on the front bumper :thumb:

I tried my hardest to get everything lined up but below was "good enough" for now.
