My current project, low profile cargo storage as I stuffed an 8" sub in the factory cargo hole leaving me nil. Still figuring out what I want to do with the back space...

Working on this project myself but will design it for sleeping as well. Do you have drawer slides and the other hardware picked out? Curious what you plan to use. Looks great so far.

Looks Good

I really like what you're doing here, and would like to see finished product after some real world use, and what you think. Always inspiration to be found here!

I do have some stuff on order. The hardware in the assembly are CAD files from McMaster-Carr for easy importing into the model, but found these on Amazon which are very close and think will work well. The drawer slides are slightly different from the model so I will have to adjust some side mount locations. For the hinges I plan on using something like pic'd below for a flush surface as I will be carpeting it. The rear-side pockets will have some sort of top drop panel I'm thinking...

Progress

More progress pics. Got the front rear mounting solution done. Used holes from existing tie downs...ACE brand external 90* strap cut into two pieces, put in vise and bent. Template made for maximum coverage edge to edge...

Collected my 3rd gen's replacement. Purchased from the original owner. The 3.4 just isn't going to get the job done for what I want and after I sell my Runner, I'll be out less than a SC with way more capability.
Going to be a sad day when the Runner leaves.

New shocks, KYB Gas-a-just KG54317.

Got the old ones out with a 14mm deep socket/wrench to hold the nut, and a pair of channel locks to rotate the body. 5 minutes per side total - gotta love these rust free CA trucks!

Hey - how are you liking these? I'm hung up between pulling the trigger on them, or continuing to "save up" for 5100s (which never seems to be possible).

I've been following a "get shit done" strategy with my rig, which basically means actually upgrading and fixing things with quality parts that are in my budget rather than putting things off b/c the better parts are too expensive.

I'm thinking the KYBs are probably going to be a huge upgrade from my blown shocks, but it's so hard to tell reading the posts on the forum... The comments are just all over place - some people love them, some people say 5100 or nothing, they're too stiff, they're too soft. It's really confusing.

Quite happy with them for the way I drive, which is 95% on-road. Not too soft, not too stiff. I don't know the benefits of 5100's for the rear (the fronts obviously give you the adjustable perches), but I am probably the wrong person to ask if you do serious offroading or wheeling.

now that you've had some time with this head unit do you still like it? recommend it or something different? I'm in the market for something with android auto but if this ones 300 it tempts me to drop another 100 and get the ddx9905s with the capacative touch and the wireless android auto.

It was a few days ago, but I put in a Kenwood DMX7706S double din.

CarPlay is really cool, my favorite feature.

No bezel trimming required, pretty much a direct bolt in upgrade.

A tip on the mysterious and confusing orange/white illumination wire that many people leave disconnected for fear of frying their rheostat - Metra 70-1761 has an orange/white wire in position 10 of the larger connector labelled "dimmer" which can be connected to the orange/white of the Kenwood harness labelled "illumination". This wire gets 12V power when you turn your running lights on and will dim the display and hard buttons. It also switches the style of some apps such as changing the CarPlay Maps app from light/white style to dark/black for night driving. Pretty slick.

This unit does NOT have a dedicated power antenna wire so your power antenna will always be up when the unit is powered on, even when you are not listing to the radio. Guess I will have to do Taco whip or add a switch, we'll see.

Otherwise the install was fairly straightforward. You could literally do it in 30 minutes if you have the harness already wired up. However the backup camera is another story...that took a long time.

Here is a list of parts I used for the install:

This is the best approach (unless you KNOW that something just slightly more experience is Clearly a better option, then save up). Just buy the best you can afford and move on. Despite the Kool-Aid drinkers in the forum that continually tout how OEM lasted 20 years, blah...blah...blah... the oil within those shocks was Actually toast by 100k miles or a decade of time. Age and heat do not treat that fluid kindly. And I'm probably being generous, especially if the vehicle was ever used hard (driven fast on washboard roads type thing).

Just get something in there and don't worry about what Other people think. We all only know the best we've had, everyone has a different idea of what "stiff" or "soft" is, and there's no good baseline anyway.

Liberated Finally!

After 2 1/2 years of ownership.......and wanting to for a long time......
I finally got the running boards removed from "Roscoe", my 98 SR5.
My wife uses them to get in so she will miss them.......but I offered to get her a step stool......
Looks much better now. One of these days I will have some time and put up some pics!

Thanks Man! I appreciate the vote of confidence. A few months back I did my brakes, and did not go with the TBU (gasp).

Instead I use Brembo replacement rotors and Akebono pads. Far too soon to tell if these will stand the test of time, but with the money left over I was able to get my LBJ replaced too.

I’m definitely getting more peace of mind knowing that more shit is in order with the truck than I would knowing that I got the “better“ brakes.

Awesome, thank you. If I’m being honest at least 95% of my driving is on road the occasional FS road to get to the trail head.

I really like the progress you’re making with your rig - top notch mild build.

Do yourself a favor and buy one that mechanically tilts (not just digital viewing angle “tilt”). Our stereo is so low that you definitely want the screen tilted or it’s hard to see. I have a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX and have the tilt angle maxed out.

You have to make the most of the money available, nothing wrong with that. I remember a time in my life that meant not eating every day, or having health insurance... so I could afford fuel to get to work. Skipping the TBU (I don't have it either, don't see the need to be perfectly honest ~ but I'm a mindful driver, always watching the road/traffic ahead and coasting WAY before I need brakes) in favor of getting the LBJ's done is Easily the better decision. Lol, brakes don't do much good if the wheel's come off the lower control arm.

So keep on, you're on the right track. I know we all need a little positive feedback sometimes, Especially online where you're flooded with people posting what looks to be "perfect" things (the best vacations/food/clothes/truck mods) that come with unlimited budget. But the truth is that's the minority, most are just like you... heck, I'm there too, just with a little more budget. Sounds like you understand how to walk that financial tightrope between wants and needs, the longer you do that the easier it gets. Doesn't stop you from splurging on things when you can afford to (me with the Bils 6112/5160 ~ I don't need that for a street-driven DDer)... but it Allows you to get to that place where you can more easily afford those kinds of decisions.

Been busy on this one

Installed KYB gas shocks, new LBJs and alignment. Installed free (nearly new looking) take off stock steel wheels with new Michelin LTX tires. Changed trans/diff oil, cleaned IAC/throttle body. Next up is brake fluid/PS fluid change and clutch pedal mech bushing replacement.

another reason i was considering the ddx9905s is that the screen physically tilts as well

Went to start my runner to try and drive it around and narrow my missfire diagnosis down but now its stuck halfway in my driveway and halfway in the street. wont go into gear at all. When i lift the ass end up i can rotate the wheels and when i lift the nose up, i can do the same. had to get AAA to dolley it into the street so that hopefully tomorrow I can put it on jacks and start trying to figure the trans issue out. Has been sitting since october while i tore the motor apart on my days off due to a blown headgasket.
