What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Set up a trans flush with the local Toyota dealer for saturday. Was a little hesitant given all the debate around it but they assured me everything would be fine. Don't know when (or if) the fluid was last changed out but it's in need, and I figure i should probably start taking care of a 300k mile trans :wof:

I did one at 320k. And it shifted perfectly when I sold it at 350

Well worth it in the long term

with all that work listed that you have done, why aren't you doing the flush...its pretty easy and timmy made a easy to follow video on it. just wondering.

Mostly because I'm very worried about messing something up (working on auto trannies sketches me out) but also because they offer it for only like $200 (including new filter) which is pretty on par with what it would cost to do it at home, so figured the peace of mind and convenience is worth it. I know it's a fairly straight forward process but idk the number of people I've seen on here somehow mess it up unknowingly is enough to put me off for now

Got my baby back yesterday, new ball joint, new wheels + tires. Went with ProComp 51 Series, 285/70/17 BFG K02 tires. It's about to go to my local shop for a steering rack leak and some other small items. Need to attach my gas can mount, Maxtrax mounts, full skids came in yesterday. I'll have a busy weekend! :)

3rd gen custom rear links and front control arm rebuild

I finished putting together some custom rear lower links and rebuilt the front lower control arms.

I put together a set of custom rear lower links and purchased a pair of Left and Right treaded Summit Machine Flex Joints with a custom set of Wide Open Design 7075 Aluminum links.

The front lower control arms were blasted, welded eimkeith reinforced brackets, installed new Sonoran Steel lower control arm bushings. I also installed the Poly Performance Taco Tabs cam delete so hopefully I will not need another alignment after wheeling with the Keystone Cruiser.

I understand and there are some jobs that make me nervous as well...200 is not bad if they are doing a real flush and a filter.

I would triple check with them that they are using the correct Dexron III compatible fluid before they do the flush just to be sure. Dealerships aren't full staffed on Saturdays so you never know if it's the new guy's Saturday of if you are getting an older technician that is familiar with our vehicles.

Nothing of great interest here, but I have a 30 minute lunch break so I blasted the MAF sensor with some CRC in the parking lot. The little things add up.....

Edit - I am still pre-smog and leaving as little to chance as possible. The CRC can claims a measurable performance boost, so there's another 1 HP for the butt dyno.

I had a persistent P0420 (for about 2 days) that appears to have been fixed by doing a better job clamping the cat-back exhaust system together. 700 miles and no Pending CEL.......

Another Edit - looking at this pic reminded me that I used the Cruise Control last weekend for the first time since owning this 4Runner and it worked pretty darn well. Never been a CC guy but it was OK for parts of a 1500 miler....

I've been seeing these plates quite a bit recently, can someone explain what the purpose is?
Edit; nevermind, I get them now! Might have to snag me a set

I did the water pump and timing belt on my 99 limited. Of course with all the extra tid bits. Next on the list is ome 891 springs with bilstein 5100s. Should I run my factory tall springs with bilstein 5100s up front or pick up some ome springs?

Measure your hub-center to fender height and search the forums for the several threads where others have done the same. If you're within 1/2" of new, stick with your original springs. Mine were all in great condition at 200k miles, should have reused them but had already bought others (fronts with the 6112's I put on).

If there's no reason to replace them due to changing the weight of the truck (big, fat plate bumper with winch), or from Excessive wear (2" down from where they should be), then why spend the money?

Who was looking for an airbox?

Last month someone was looking for a stock airbox.

I spied this one at the local pick a part. It's from an 02.

Note the front bracket is broken off just short of where the bolt was. You'd have to fenagle something there.

If whomever was looking for an airbox is still interested reply and I'll grab it for you; hope to go this Saturday...

Rear brakes melted off

drove back from Death Valley and my rear brakes completely locked up and disintegrated the rear shoes. almost caught fire only on driver side though.. anyone ever heard of that happening?

Yikes! And are the axle seals leaking? Contaminated sticky shoes? Is the parking brake cable compromised and not releasing?

Dang. Never a 4runner but I have seen a jeep catch on fire that way. I’d do the rear axle seals and wheel bearing along with new brakes and you should be good

If your axle seal is leaking, the fluid buildup on the shoes gets hot and will act like glue... had this happen to me when I stopped really hard, had a leaking axle. Luckily I was half a mile from home... they released eventually and I soon had the axle seal repaired and new shoes installed.

The axle fluid, being gear oil, is also theoretically flammable

Check for an axle seal leak, if it’s bad you’ll see the fluid spun all over the inside of the wheel... can also pull the abs sensor and will see oil in there (should be dry if no leaks)
