Regreased my brakes and pads to keep them from sticking. Anyone have any idea where this leak is coming from, maybe a freeze plug? It's up above the starter and I'm very slowly losing coolant

all night maintanance

After having a code pop up for my trans ( this truck is new to me in last month ) I decided to start some much needed maintenance.

I'm not the most mechanically inclined but try anything once before i ship it off to get fixed... this is also going to be my daughters rig at some point ( shes 15 ) will see but she has awesome patients where i just scream and throw tools... which happened a lot last night!

We dropped the transmission pan to replace the filter and do another fluid drain and fill ( shit was black and silver... terrible )

I didn't realize what a PAIN it was to finagle the dip stick tube around and out... literally costs us at least 2 hours of awfulness... took off sway bar was still brutal.

here is a picture of the pans inside... its fuked but praying i wont need a new tranny asap... we will save for one but dont need that expense right now for a truck we drive every other weekend for adventures.

anyway we started out planning to do the trans filter, trans cooler, mag in line filter, grease everything, diff services front and rear plus the transfer case...

we spent 6 hours of hell on the trans pan and filter alone. with cleanup.

here is the pan before cleaning !!! YIKES !!!

RC V2 Rear Monotube Shocks / Diff Vent

First of all, thanks to all of you who have posted over the years with how to's and helpful pictures. Because of the knowledge and help I got from this forum I decided to join my self and maybe help others in the future.

I swapped out my old Bilstein 5100's that have been on my 2000 4runner for who knows how long (bought car used) for some RC V2 Monotube's. This is one shock that I could find very little information about and zero info of others running it on the 3rd gen application. I also removed the stock rear diff breather that was completely compromised and did not vent at all. This is more than likely what caused the axle seal to leak on the previous owner. I did the 6ft long hose mod and vented into the fuel door location.

Installation was pretty standard. The shocks look great and seem to perform excellent so far. I can report back in the coming weeks with updates if anyone would like. I will attach pictures later tonight as I forgot to snag some last night during the install.

I have been running the RC loaded struts up front and the ride has been great.

I finished the valve cover gaskets job today! Feels good and so far the car has not blown up - lol

Problem is... I think it's still leaking oil. Maybe the oil pan gasket? Either way it was WAY obvious the valve cover gaskets needed to be done so at least I have eliminated that oil leak cause.

Classic License Plates

Got my Texas Classic License Plates. Bought in 1997 and turned 25.

Congrats. It's a big job.
Clean up the oil around and under the engine and monitor.

If it's anything like a Toyota, if you give it some love now, you should be fine until you've saved enough to repair it or get a new tranny.

Did you replace the bolts on the pan when you dropped it? I've had a slow leak, we thought the new gasket failed, but the parts guy at the dealership mentioned the washers fail so you need to get new bolts. I only replaced the one in the trouble area for now so we'll see how it goes. Just a thought to make sure you don't have to do it three times like me.

On the other hand, after seeing those magnets, maybe you'll want to drop the pan again to see how they look!

Got a couple of checklist items taken care of.

Replaced the driver side sun visor clip
Replaced a trans pan bolt to hopefully stop a slow leak
Built the carcass for the drawer system. I'll finish the drawers when I get the slides in.

The transmission pan wasn't designed to be used with a gasket, there are photos in the forums of folks who've used the aftermarket gaskets and "dimpled" their pans (tightening the bolt into a soft gasket) which caused leaks.

While copper and aluminum "crush" washers do work-harden and fail to seal unless annealed (softened), the same isn't true for steel. I don't recall the transmission pan using anything but steel for the mounting bolts, but I'm old and it's been a few years since I had it off, so I may be wrong.

I think I finally found the source of my oil leak/seepage. The photo doesn't show it well, but it's coming from the area circled in red:

I'm guessing the only proper way to fix it would be to redo the oil pan seal/gasket, which I'm not motivated to do at this point given how slow the leak is. I did buy some of that Re-Seal leak stopper, which I may add just as a hail mary, before learning to embrace the seepage.

Im sure you already know but I highly reccomend you dont use the leak stopper in the oil. It might stop the leak but could cause lots of other issues in other parts of the engine.

I know its prob a decent amount of work but prob not too difficult to just remove the pan and reseal, just time consuming and messy.

I wonder if you just removed a bolt at that end and forced in some gasket maker on the outside then retightened if it would work. I cant imagine there is too much pressure from the inside at that location.

There are different types of leak stoppers, some that recondition the seals and make them swell up, and others that solidify in place. The latter is the one you are referring to, and I will definitely avoid that one. I was thinking of the former type, like this one - Amazon.com: ATP AT-205 Re-Seal Stops Leaks, 8 Ounce Bottle : Automotive. I've seen positive feedback on it from forum members whom I greatly respect.

I just don't know if it will work for me, because if it's indeed the oil pan joint, that was assembled with FIPG, and I doubt that a "seal sweller" will help.

For that same reason, I think that trying to tighten up that joint is fruitless, since if the FIPG bond is broken, tightening the bolts won't help.

Still anxiously awaiting my NWF triple stick shifter kit, supposed to be here on Thursday. So I pulled the belly armor and took out the old transfer case to get ready. Apparently it had been leaking a little. A bit wet on the top, seemed to be coming from the shifter base. And a little drip coming off the front driveshaft output.

Here's the new NWF Ecocrawler box on the right, the stock transfer case on the left.

Majic,

That is a lottttt of glitter in that pan. People freak out and post when they find a little 1-2 mm smudge of metal on the magnets. In your case, it looks like the magnet are dang near full of metal, leaving the rest of the shavings in the channels. With that said, it is a great opportunity to let your daughter learn with this truck and maybe even drive for a year or two. Teenagers are great at dinging up their parents cars. That's why they're given old cars.

Installed a rear power outlet for my Dometic cooler/fridge. 12 gauge wiring up to the yellowtop Optima house battery up front. I put a resettable circuit breaker up there next to the battery.

And just got this package full of blingy parts on the front doorstep!!!

It's the triple stick setup for my NWF Eco-crawler reduction box doubler!

I pulled the stock transfer case Sunday, should be pretty quickly to get it all in and running. Then I need to figure out some udder-like shifter boot, lol. Man trans and 3 transfer case shifters...
