Today I changed the valve cover gaskets, spark plugs/wires/grommets, pcv valve/gasket, intake manifold gaskets. Running like a champ now.

Rear differential fluid change & power steering fluid changed. I swear I’m done working on this car this year.

Lol I feel you. Last two months have been a bonanza of work on mine, much to the chagrin of my roommates who have had to put up with a garage filled with parts and tools until a week ago. Throwing on sliders this week and I should hopefully be done for a while.

cleaned out 20yrs of deposits from the intake and exhaust ports, fixed valve lash and switched over to shim-less buckets (its amazing the weight u shave off the valve tran), cleaned the block and heads.

Can you tell us more about the shim-less buckets? Never heard of those! Does that prevent you from adjusting the valve lash later on?

With the shim-less buckets, the bucket its self is the "shim" but on the inside of the bucket with a greatly reduced amount to metal/mass as is just has to make contact with the top of the valve. With all 24 replaced ur around 1lb weight savings (that's a lot considering 1lb less for every RPM) . U can adjust valve lash later but it requires removal of the camshafts and switching the whole bucket. With valve lash adj is around 250K most of us won't be adjusting said again unless its a full rebuild which as 500K i'd be replacing valve guides anyway and redoing lash again. I just get the shim-less buckets out of junk yard Toyota engines like Matrix, Corolla, Celica and some others as well.

clearock Less means more. :)
Been years since thinking on this always thought this a good upgrade on the 5VZ for the snap it'll give revving up.
Way you're doing it pretty much drop in. On a full rebuild same thickness shim new valves grind the stems since you're in that deep my thinking.

Interesting! What product(s) did you use for that project?

Back in the day people would gently use 0000 steel wool lubricated with water hose.
Haven't seen a need to change my ways. :)
Wax with car wax though not the wax on windshield. Used it many times on many cars never scratched glass.

I drove mine to work today since my other vehicle is out of commission at the moment. It feels really weird to switch back and forth from a regular 4 door sedan to a lifted 3rd gen. It's almost like having to learn how to ride a bike all over again! Lol

Took off all the limited trim today. Hoping the tape keeps water out of the doors for a few days until I can patch up all the holes.

I'm thinking of welding the holes in the rocker panels, and just putting some mesh behind the rest for body filler to stick to.

After repairing all the dents and filling all the holes I can wrap the truck with a sweet dark blue color.

It's been a year since I crashed this thing and it's been a very slow process getting it repaired. Once it passes safety inspection I can fab up some new steel bumpers and take it on the road again!

Curious - is the inspection due to the crash repairs or an ongoing thing in UT?

EDIT - I guess my real question is: are there ongoing vehicle 'safety' inspections in UT like there are in some eastern states where you have to de-modify your vehicle to comply. I can't see that being the case in UT, but was wondering. I may be buying a small piece of land there not too far from Virgin.
Thanks

The safety inspection is just so I can get a rebuilt title on it. It was totaled, the insurance company only valued it at $1000 so of course I bought it back.

Safety inspections are not required in Utah, haven't been for quite some time. It's probably one of the least strict states where modifications are concerned.

Southern Utah is super beautiful, especially the Zion area! I believe Virgin is a short drive from Sand Hollow as well. I wouldn't mind living there myself.

Yeah I figured Utah of all places would not require that stuff. Even CA doesn't. It was in my mind because I saw another thread earlier where a forum member was asking if anyone had a set of stock wheels and tires for an upcoming inspection. I think that stuff is mainly in the northeast from what I understand. If I get the land, it's just an acre....not really 'living' but more 'being' on it. And later, building something.....we'll see. I have always liked UT and have made several trips to Moab and the La Sals and a Red Bull Rampage near Virgin years back.
