the shafts and housing from said r the same for 96-02 except for a small bracket on the housing, the seal for the 02 should work fine on the 96... or i'm I missing something.....?

The shaft diameter is smaller on the 96, Slightly better than no seal noise-wise, but also not actually sealed. Could be because the newer 3rd gens have a slip joint is why thicker diameter? I'm guessing here.
Sound deadening complete
Finally finished fully sound deadening the car. Removed all the interior and panels to installed the deadening materials. Used Kilmat, foam, and mass loaded vinyl for the interior floor. Just Kilmat and foam for the doors. This project was one of the most time consuming of all the mods I've done, but worth it for the ultimate build.

I'm always learning new shit on this site, ty for schooling me, what about changing the steering assembly, etc out with a 99+??? I have a few laying around u can have but probably not worth the effort and cost of shipping.

Incredibly nice of you to offer anyway...if the proper seal was available I'd install one, but now that I've quadruple-sticked it that little bit of noise can't beat the few extra inches of tunnel hole sounds.

Got her back on the road. I have four warning lights showing. I made the mistake of believing whoever told me it wouldn’t pass inspection like that. In Texas, “Check Engine” is the only one that will make it fail an inspection. So inspection, oil change, and replaced the washer fluid hose that had cracked. I’m thrilled to be driving my 4Runner again. I want to get it ready for a big road trip in July.

Nice work, I did this job in the summer and it was 100% worth it.
How was doing the doors? I still have to do mine and replace speakers at the same time.
Also, was the MLV worth it in your opinion? I skipped that step but was curious if it really absorbed that much more sound.
The doors and the trunk take the longest. Unlike the floor, you can't use full sheets at a time, with lots of cutting for the doors. For the doors, I used kilmat and foam inside the door and on the front when you remove the door panel. Lastly, I used foam on the back of the door panel itself. It took me around 3 hrs per door. I will get a pic for you to reference.
As for the MLV, I've had it the whole time, so I don't know what it would have been without it. I wanted to go all the way with the sound deadening, so it was a must. It was super easy and quick to install.
Here is a picture of the door.
In green is the access hole you'll use to put the sound-deadening inside the door. I covered it once the inside was completed; I also removed the clear plastic sheet that covered the front of the door. In red is an area where you need to be careful that the back of the kilmat does not touch the door mechanism. I had to go and fix this later.

Painted all my plastic body panels/flares and restored the faded plastic
Raptor Liner Spray (Basalt Gray) and Solution Finish Black Plastic & Vinyl Plastic Trim Restorer for the win!
Some before and after pics (although I forgot the before pic for the raptor spray). I removed, cleaned, and restored the roof rack as well.
Gonna repair the horribly bad clear coat pealing on the roof next.

Yesterday prepped the rust on the undercarriage with a wire brush so I can apply fluid film today and I also replaced the rear O2 sensor.

That's my next step, to include some POR15 on those welds that like to corrode.
QUESTION: what do you all use to replicate that black rubbery paint on the frame?
I maybe can post something everyday, as am in the process of a powertrain rebuild of a 99. It is turning out to be WAY MORE work than I bargained for!

Re-upholstered the drivers side lower seat today, it had a pretty bad tear in it when I bought it. Didn’t turn out too bad for my first time trying something like this. I used zip ties in place of hog rings. Wish I could show some pics, won’t let me upload attachments.

hoto:Picked up my 4Runner from the shop today. I dropped it off last week to get a new clutch and flywheel installed and for some repairs to the transmission and x-fer case. I also had them do the rear main seal and change the oil and filter. I don't have a garage, and didn't even want to entertain doing this work myself in sub 40* weather on my back in my carport. The transmission input shaft seal and x-fer case seal needed replacing. The upper shifter housing needed a new gasket and the 4WD shifter bushing was cracked and needed to be replaced. I went to Total Upgrade Automotive and Transmission in Hillsboro, OR for the work. They were super-friendly, non-condescending and great to deal with.

Yesterday, somebody in a parking lot got me 2 brand new bumper dents for Christmas. I didn't want them, I don't want to keep them, and I really wish I could give them back but, I didn't know I had been given that gift until 20 minutes later as I walked out of a different store and approached the 4runner from the rear this time.
The really great thing is I saw the lady who was parked next to me standing in front of her white SUV looking at her car and when I walked from the front and went between our vehicles to get in mine, we locked eyes for a second or two and she promptly jumped in hers and left. These aren't the only dents in my 4runner BUT, they are the only ones that have been acquired since I've owned it. I know its not a huge amount of damage and can be fixed pretty easily but, its the lack of accountability and principle of the whole thing. Its principalities in this.
