What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Today I spent a little time doing small repairs on the piglet after our 3,375 mile adventure that took us all around Colorado and Utah. Wheeling, mountain biking, hiking. Thankfully nothing big to repair this year.

Our first time on Hell's Revenge, ended up hanging out with the blue pickup and FJ a bit after Hell's gate.
We had come across the pick-up playing with the hot tub. That's the point it started overheating. The rest of the time he'd get it to calm down, then another overheat. Anyway, the 3 of us were making sure he and his daughter would get back to the trailhead. He had some coolant and water and we had a few gallons of water. It started each time, but didn't sound like he had much compression by the end. The truck actually made it out on its own power. Toyota people sticking together was cool. Well, 106 degrees, so really it was pretty hot.

All of us did Hell's Gate before we ended up together.
When the FJ tried escalator as soon as it'd get vertical the auto transmission would go neutral. He had to abandon the idea and we'd already decided the 4Runners weren't really built for that one after watching what the solid axle pickup had to do.
The green truck, my husband, did staircase.

333,733 miles on the '96 when all was said and done, still my daily driver and grocery getter.

Couldn’t seem to post this until now, but last week I finished my front bumper and then headed to Moab with my friend. We did Fins n Things and Hell’s Revenge.

I was feeling super confident on Hell’s Revenge, but we both chickened out on Hell’s Gate. We did complete the Staircase though. My friend’s 4th gen had a hard time (maybe I’m just a bad spotter?) but my Cassie made light work of it with the rear locker.

The front bumper sticks out a couple inches farther than I would’ve preferred, but surprisingly I had no issues with approach angle. I only scraped once on both front and back, but that’s because we were rushing to get back to town and I went down a pretty big ledge. In my defense, it was 104 degrees and I wasn’t thinking straight.

Overall I’m very happy with how the bumper looks. My winch should fit snugly in there and hopefully not block too much airflow through the radiator. No idea where I should mount the control box though.
We did Hells Revenge on 7/10, we were probably out there within a day or two of each other.

Did Hells Gate and Staircase, if anything, I think Staircase was slightly harder? Pretty similar, though, but you did have to steer left and right a bit mro on Staircase to stay centered in the notch.

Watched a guy with a much more built Toyota pickup do Escalator, he made it over the first steep section and promptly crunched his fender into a wall when it leaned him into it. Decided to not do that with our 4Runners.

And had no interest in doing the 'tipover challenge'. Nope, just doesn't sound like anything I need to do.

Here's a video from me going up Hells Gate, showing how the transfer case doubler does a great job of making exciting trails look boring, lol. 1st gear, double low, just sort of crept on up it. I just eyeballed it a bit from below and drove on up. It always looks larger and scarier in videos, in person it was smaller and easier than I expected.

POV was a GoPro stuck to the driver side headlight.

thanks for sharing that video

Now for what I did today. Got the radflo coilovers and resis mounted up to the front. Easy, like swapping oem for oem, but they are longer then stock as I opted for the extended travel version. Which I think is 1.5 inches longer then stock, but I'm unsure.

Specs of radflo:
2.5"
Extended travel
Resi's
Custom valving

The frame has the correct holes I needed for the resi brackets. The front hole i drilled out and put a rivnut. Just had to space them off the frame 1/2 inch or so. Passenger side has one of the 2 holes needed. So 2 more rivnuts later it's mounted up. No clerance issues or rubbing. Perfect.

Took it for a rip in the neighborhood, son of a biscuit, I should have done that sooner. I'm running 650lb springs.

Oh also threw on the perry parts front bumps.

Edit - from research, front limit straps are in my future. To save the cv's mostly. Limit straps will be on the rear regardless.

been meaning to ask, where did you get the fender liner things , dont know name, keep mud off engine, black

Splash guards. They are made by arc splash guards.

Arc splash guard

They are a bit pricy, but it's awesome material and fit nicely. If you go with them, before install, lay them out in the sun for a while. Makes them more pliable.

GhostRing sigh, yes, yes they are. I have been meaning to clean all the old grease. Been contemplating going to the service free ball joints. Just can't get past the cost.

Same.

I have a sneaking suspicion mine are wearing a bit on the accelerated side,
so I am torn between the new versions, or a different A arm altogether...

Installed a new trans cooler and started to flush the coolant out to switch back to factory red coolant.

Both great things to do! What brand trans cooler did you go with? I've been running my B&M 70264 on my 3rd gen since early 2016 and it has been one of my favorite items I've added to my rig. Really and truly. And with a ScanGauge tool I can monitor those temps closely and adjust my driving style accordingly to ensure optimal temps. Love love love the coolers.

I went With an eBay universal cooler, it takes up most of the grill and cools amazing so far I also added an inline filter from Magnaifne. I've been going through all my cooling recently I also did a champion all aluminum radiator, fan clutch, and TRD thermostat. Long story but I overheated on the way back from Tahoe on a camping trip so I wanted to go through it all for some extra assurance. Haven't gotten to stress test the trans cooler yet but today I couldn't get my coolant past 196.

Nothing today. Posting because I am new and cannot start a thread because I don't have enough posts.

do have a question: is it safe to use Seafoam in the crankcase of a Gen3 SR5 (190,000mi, looks to have been well-maintained)?
Have heard it is an excellent treatment to rid the case of carbon deposits; but have also heard that it can cause problems in a particularly dirty engine (essentially, cleaning too much carbon gunk and spreading through the engine).

anyone have any advice?

I personally have not, but I know others that run just a bit b4 oil changes for a few miles

I ran it for about 500 miles before an oil change when I was younger and stupider. I wouldn't doo it now, or recommend it. However the oil that came out was the blackest oil I've ever seen come out of my rig.

I would recommend just doing regular oil changes with good quality oil. The oil has detergents in it that clean the engine and aren't as aggressive as seafoam.

If you're really curious though you could get an oil analysis from blackstone labs 403 Forbidden

I think seafoam is a great to run in the gas tank and through the intake plenum also.

Thanks! I hadn’t thought about Blackstone! That’s probably a great place for the definitive answer.

That's solid dude. I briefly read through the previous posts and concur with basically everything that was stated, so good on you for going over the entire cooling system, especially the thermostat and fan clutch. You should be pretty good to go from here on out.

Just to contribute to the convo, my rig is an 01 with 336K on it at the moment and hardly ever goes over 193 degrees. It usually sits between 186-190, even on the excruciatingly hot days. The trans cooler will definitely do you a huge favor with ensuring longevity of the transmission itself. Sounds like you're ahead of the game now, so I'm glad to hear it.

+1 for the Blackstone labs oil analysis. I've had it done once for my truck, right before I closed in on the 300K mile mark. Results were actually fantastic (but I take meticulous care of my truck) and I think it was worth the money. If you've never done it before I say go for it.
