What Was I Thinking?
The steering wheel starts shaking when I'm on the brake at high speed. Of course I'm looking at the usual suspects: warped rotors and sticky calipers. So I think I'm just going to do exploratory surgery and see what I need to do in the future.
So I get off both front calipers and it turns out the driver's side outer pistons are sticking: the outer pad measures .051 and the inner measures .055. There's also a metric ton of gunk baked onto the pins. The pistons also hung noticeably when I tried to compress them with my clamp.
So rather than put everything back together just to tear it down again - I'll just get the rotors turned and pick up a reman'ed caliper. Well, this is where I forgot that I live in a small town and it's a Sunday. The local Napa doesn't have the part, nor can they turn rotors on Sundays. The Napa 20 miles away has the part, but they outsource their rotor-turning and can't do it today. The local O'Reilly can get the caliper today, but they can't turn the rotor because the back retaining plate doesn't fit inside my rotor. Brakes Plus wants $140 to turn the rotors while they're still on the vehicle - which at this point is pretty undriveable. Honestly, I should have just torn everything apart when I could get it all fixed - like on a Saturday.
TL;DR: I grabbed a beer and will get everything done at the local Napa tomorrow.
I think I'll take this opportunity to paint the calipers. Should I go with black or red? It seems a little odd to bring attention to stock calipers with red paint, but it's worth asking. Opinions welcome.
