What did you do with your 4runner today?

I find it funny you always talk about the "performance" of your 4Runner but tell someone you would avoid running e85 like the plague?

First and foremost E85 is unregulated so all batches are different you can have maximum ethanol content of 83% and a minimum content of anywhere between 60% and 51% (summer and winter blends). So with inconsistent batches it can be very easy to have a problem somewhere, even more so with add timing and boost. Most people tune conservatively when dealing with e85. So 85% ethanol and 15% gas it is not. Secondly the alcohol in the ethanol love to absorb water. The activity is known as hygroscopic. I don't think I should tell you why that is bad. For my own personal vehicles I run race gas. Does it cost more, yes. But I'd rather have that insurance for the "performance" of my vehicles.

I installed new Toytec super flex coils and IME nitro charger shocks in the rear. Needless to see, I have the "rake" look back until I save up the cash for coilovers! I really like the ride. You can tell a big difference between the front and back. Install was easy...took me and a buddy two hours but we took it really slow. I took some pics on my phone but can't post them directly...I will try and get them in here later.

No you get great performance out of E85. My buddy here is the top tuner for Subarus here and he converts them to e85 with amazing reliable results.

In a flex fuel vehicle e85 would yield less performance than good old petrol but a vehicle that can take full advantage of e85 would see a great performance increase. Think of it as cheap 100+ octane racing fuel, no pissing match needed.

When it starts being regulated by weights and measures, and when Profession Race Bodies use it, then it will be just fine to run safely and regularly. Tests from one gas station, of content, can very a good deal, between resupply. Untl then, SkylineGTracer has a very valid point.

Talk to multiple performance shops, and they can tell you plenty of horror stories as well.

Now, if you can make your own, or have a way to be certain of the content percentage/quality, it is far better than regular gasoline, as far as octane rating is concerned.

E100 would be much better to run. No need to worry about consistency of the blend stocks there.

I went to a famous track that Carol Shelby himself used to race on back in the 60's. The track has been closed for decades but there was an event today celebrating it and they actually let anyone and everyone drive the course. . . at your own speed. Was an absolute blast. For any auto geeks out there they later found out that a track on Gran Turismo 5 was created after this track. Also after the track and at 88,000 miles and to knock off some small jobs off the 90k mile maintenance schedule I changed my spark plugs....my ORIGINAL spark plugs?! The previous owner never had them changed when I bought it off of him with 72k miles. Had both Densos and NGK. Auto store was out of NGK so I got Densos Iridiums. We shall see what this does for my motor and mileage.

I finished painting my fender flares this morning and then compounded and waxed the rest of the truck tonight. Can't wait until tomorrow for hanging out at the pool and grilling hot dogs and hamburgers...YUM

Next weekend the Bilstein 5100's go in set at 2.5" and will install the rear 1.5 daystar lift. I can't wait for that to get done.

Changed the oil to Mobil 1 Synthetic today, and greased the zerks in the drive shaft with Mobil 1 Synthetic grease. Awesome sunny, 80 degree day for it too! Put all four wheels in the air so I can spin the drive shafts by hand. Was a bit of a pain but worth it once I got under there with the grease gun. Also allowed the oil to really drain out completely. But I wouldn't go through all this just to do the oil.
