What did you do with your 4runner today?

I took off the Toyota bug deflector on the hood that was on it when I bought it. It was pretty faded, cracking, and overall just didn't look very good. Then I removed the running boards bc I never use them and neither does my wife, plus I like the look better. Then I removed the sport bumper guard thing that was busted up. It left the 4 holes but I'm working on plugging those sometime. Even with the holes, it looks better than that busted up plastic guard did.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Sounds like I already picked a good locations. Saves me time trying to test out the other locations.

I routed mine up the A-pillar, across the front of the headliner, and mounted it behind the clip for the visor, near the overhead console. Up high, out of the way, no wind noise

It was the first really hot day here in NC, and I got a call from my lady that the Accord was stalling/wouldn't start.

Before I called her a cab, I tried something:

Sure enough, I got her to blow cold air through the floor vents and it quit sputtering and dying almost immediately.

She got home fine.

Pics below show what I found when I opened the main relay. (Any Honda guy knows it's probably that relay.)

Then I drove the ole 4runner to the auto parts store to replace it.

Original lasted 13 years.

The Autozone one lasted 2 years.

Good news is it is lifetime replacement (and back in 2013, they were the only store in town that had one in stock at 6 o'clock on a Saturday night)!





This is a known tricky Honda problem from the mid 90s until 2005 or 2006.

But I never understood why???

I heard shoddy 3rd world soldering or vibration caused the dry joints.

Any of you all understand this craziness?

I work in a lab that does surface mount tech and waver soldering. Those joints would fail inspection criteria for mil-spec and life safety system devices. It might even be borderline for long life consumer devices. But it all depends on what level that manufacturer operates to.

Last night I installed a new radio. I went with the 2014 Scion pioneer radio. I love it, it has a nice clean factory look, Bluetooth and touch screen. The install only took about 30mins even with routing and mounting the Bluetooth mic.

Yea, you will need a few harnesses and antenna adapters. [MENTION=84709]Buckles[/MENTION] did a nice write up with part numbers of what you will need. The harnesses and adapters will cost you over $100 depending on what kind of deals you can find.

Fixed a squeak.

Since purchasing the 'runner I've been plagued by this terrible rattly squeaky sound coming from the rear hatch. I've disassembled and tightened nearly every bolt on the damn thing.

After considering it for a while, I had an epiphany: the latch itself.

Sure enough I open the hatch and notice the "hoop" has been worn down to bare metal. Wrapped it up in duct tape and no more noise!

Will get a proper coating and some grease to replace the tape this weekend, but I'm glad to be rid of that noise :whoo:

Fixed the annoying/embarassing exhaust rattle. Two hose clamps put together to make one large one,wrapped it around the driver side secondary cat's heat shield.
While I was at it I looked over the rear shocks and made sure I didn't leave anything loose when I installed them last weekend :thumb:

Yep. Check the latch.

If that's not it not that I also some padding behind the rear tailgate garnish (i believe that's what Toyota calls it)....anyway the plastic bit above the license plate that has the toyota emblem in it. Mine was loose and squeaking, so I had to fix that too, but the latch was much louder and more irritating.

I tracked down my rear hatch squeaking to the rubber cushions. There is one on each side, right where the tail lights are. I discovered that the rubber, when dried out, rubs against the plastic piece attached to the hatch, causing the squeaking. I lubed the rubber pieces with some lithium grease and the squeak is gone.
