What did you do with your 4runner today?

Replaced the PCV valve, still rattle some but very soiled for a vehicle that had regular oil changes/service at a dealership, just looked at the schedule book, and it only say's to "Inspect the following:" but never directly gives an interval, which should "30,000 to 50,000 miles" according to https://repairpal.com/pcv-valve-replacement. Although I like getting a well maintained used vehicle that was maintained at a dealership, I grow skeptical it has been a thorough process as I expected.

Other thing was a bottle of Iso-Heet (Isopropyl - Absorbs Water) and separate bottle of just injector cleaner. This is my 2nd tank fill-up with both these because knowing from a Tercel, water in the tank can get to be a significant problem. And I'm not going to replace/upgrade fuel injectors so better be sure my jets are clean. Now to go burn some gas!

installed SPC upper control arms, my factory uppers werent so bad, just one was completely dry and rusted... only 1 lol. anyways i messed around it, made it super cambered (herrafrush) and then brought it back to normal. I definitely need an alignment now.

Got a lot done Saturday night...

- Installed 06+ projector headlights from Rockauto.com.

- Replaced the melted fog lamp harness so that the HID relay harness will work without issue. Bad connection caused it to flicker on and off.

- Installed Rad Rubber Designs engine splash covers. Highly recommend them! Great quality and fit.
Rad Rubber Design 4th Gen Engine Splash Guards

- Upgraded the LED bulbs in the running boards and door lights... so much brighter!

On another note regarding the 87 Octane vs 91/93 Octane gas debate, I was using BP 93 Octane for the past year or so after using 87 Octane since I bought the 4Runner in 2004. The higher octane gas caused my MPG to go down ~2MPG and I noticed that I didn't have as much power around 1500-2000 RPM (this could explain why the gears would shift more often when I stayed within 1500-2000 RPM). After switching back to 87 Octane, my MPG went back up, I could feel more power in the lower RPM band, less shifting between gears but also less power in the higher RPM range (not as "peppy"). I think I'll try using 89 Octane next to see if there is any other improvement in MPG or power.

Liquid Wrench silicon spray on window tracks, was getting an audible click as driver window went past have way point.

Thanks on the splash-guard link too. Actually was a plus to have passenger side out when filling transmission, just ran the plastic tube out behind the tire to a step ladder high enough I could fill the funnel attached there and let it flow.

Finally gave into temptation and traded in my 08 SR5 on a brand new 2017 5th Gen SR5 Premium last night. Here's a pic that I snapped at the dealer, I tried to recreate this pic from 2012 when I bought the 08 and traded in my 03.

And again, out with the old and in with the new again!

Loving the color so far, and the interior is like a freaking living room, so much headroom and so comfortable, way more spacious and comfortable than my last 2 4Runners. Already ordering mods for it. Guess I have to start posting in the 5th gen section instead of over here. I'll still be around to help answer questions about mods that I did on my 4th gens. Going to have a lot of parts up for sale in the next day or 2 also, so stay tuned!

So is it common for you to do a trade in about every 5 years? Just wondering. Also how many miles did you put on it during ownership. Excited for you though and congrats on the new ride. There is every a nautical blue fb group if ya get really bored.

There goes my money... thanks t4r.org!

Today, I decided to do something about my shuddering and pulsating steering wheel: I ordered an expansive and expensive list of parts for the 5th gen brake upgrade. Centric front rotors, all 4 calipers, 6 stainless steel hoses... haven't found much on pads, so I'd love some suggestions/thread links. Got my windows tinted last week (15% Ceramic on everything but sunroof & windshield). It just gets better and better! Thanks everyone for providing me with so many ways to spend my money. :lookout:

5th Gen brakes will be my next mod.

Thanks man, I guess that's about my limit, owned both for 5 1/2 years before trading in. I put just under 70K miles on my 08 before trading it in and did hardly any maintenance to it other than oil changes, brakes and rotors once and a few small things. It was going to need a lot of work soon, the shocks were shot, the balljoints and bushings were worn out, I just didn't want to deal with a big maintenance bill and wanted to drive something newer. I've loved my last 2 4th gens though, and they're still my fav 4Runner body style.

I added 2 ski racks, 3 bike racks, a laundry hamper, a cargo box and more... oh, wait just moving from Vegas to South Carolina. 750 miles yesterday through the mountains and stopped in Boulder to visit a friend. Almost 18mpg so far at 5-10 under the speed limit.
Truck still has rake loaded down this much. I love the factory cone shaped progressive bump stops. No hard hits on big bumps.

I did the HCF delete and installed a jumper wire for constant 12v to my outlets. The jumper wire was a complete pain in the ass because the aftermarket security system wires were in the way and they were tight! Managed to finally get to the relay and it works like a champ.

I finished my stereo install with a USB port that I bought for my car play connection and I installed some AVS in channel window visors.

I need to do this... I got the lifetime replacement calipers but the labor is no fun...

These trucks are tuned for 91 octane, technically. I would definitely try 89 and see if there's much of a difference. Because of the tune for 91, the engine probably only advances timing far enough to utilize it. 93, being harder to ignite, is going to be less efficient because the engine can't properly compensate.

I, personally, have found the opposite to be true. I seem to have more power all around with higher octane (we can't get 91 here, only 93 which I consider overkil/is higher than recommendedl, so I run 89). 87 causes some funny idle issues and makes the truck feel a bit wimpier. My gas mileage seems to be abysmal no matter what I do...

If you wanna get really serious, go with something like EBC Yellowstuff. Good luck overheating em. Other than that, just don't get something cheap and crappy and you'll be fine.

I need to do all of this as well, unfortunately. My rear rotors have deposits on em and drive me insane during low speed braking.

They offer Yellowstuff and Yellowstuff Truck pads. Which one? Either way, these look the business and I'll probably order a set soon.

Where did you get this information? I've always believed our 4Runners are intended to run on 87 octane.
