What did you do with your 4runner today?

Installed some Kicker CSC693's in the front doors. I left the stock tweeters for now since I didn't want to cut up the wiring yet. The Kickers definitely don't sound as muddy as the stock speakers did. Also installed the smoker's kit.

Still to do this week: install some Polk DXi 650's in the rear doors that I've had lying around for a few years. Replace the scratched and gross gauge cluster plastic. Complete brake replacement with 5th gen upgrade. Replace the driver's side post-cat O2 sensor to hopefully get rid of the P0430 code I've been getting. Install new spark plugs. Install my HAM radio antenna.

Just a thought I had while considering doing this myself: would it make sense to put some kind of screen-protector sheet on the new one before installing it? That way you could avoid it getting scratched up.

I can't remember the last time I really listened to radio. The sales guy mention HD radio on the SD higher end model, but I would be wasting $$ for something that I wouldn't use.
I'm biased towards Alpine, too!:biggrin2:

try the pioneer at the store to play around, might be better than you alpine :loco:.
pioneer for life :music:
too bad i dont want to give up the single din for a double din yet. i like my radio, it just dont have hd radio, but most of the time i stream spotify through b/t.

So I'm in need of replacing both front wheel bearings, but in a crunch time wise so I figured I'd get it quoted at a shop just for simplicity sake...$1000. Looks like I'll be ordering the hub assembly and doing it myself. I plan on replacing the hub assemblies, and the inner seal as it seems recommended to replace while in there.

Also, while I have the hub assembly off, I'm thinking about upgrading the brake dust shields to either 4th gen sport ones, or 5th gen ones in anticipation of future brake upgrades. I plan on upgrading calipers and rotors before too long (my left front is seized for the 2nd time) and I have the small brakes from the factory (came with 16" wheels). The only thing holding me back from going with 5th gen calipers, is not being able to find any that come painted other than $500 dollar power stop calipers. If I go with 4th gen sport calipers, I can get some that come painted black from napa for $90/side and have a lifetime warranty. I don't have any issues with the performance of my brakes right now (other than the seized caliper) so I feel like even just upgrading to the sport calipers and rotors would be a worthwhile upgrade. Thoughts?

Wheel bearings really aren't too hard as long as the bolts come out. An impact helps, but isn't 100% necessary (I recommend swinging by Harbor Freight and picking up their $35-after-discount electric impact. It works great). Be sure to clean up all surfaces and use anti-seize when you put it all back together.

What's stopping you from getting a set of 5th gen calipers and painting em black with caliper paint? Would be super easy since they're off the truck.

Yeah, I have an impact and luckily have no rust so hopefully everything comes off easily. I'll spray everything with PB Blaster before I start. And as far as painting the calipers, that's an option, but I feel like the finish will last a lot longer if it came that way from the factory rather than me spraying them in the garage. It'd also probably be hard to get all the nooks and crannies. And I read through napa's lifetime warranty, it's not covered on vehicles that the calipers weren't intended for (i.e. 5th gen brake on a 4th gen) so that's another thing that has me almost leaning toward the 4th gen sport upgrade instead of the 5th gen.

Yeah, my friend and I (on a lift) did my FR wheel bearing in 30 minutes. Just get the whole assembly and swap er out.

The warranty thing is a good point. Particularly since they're prone to seizing.

Nice, did you do the inner seal as well? I plan on buying from the MarionBumper2Bumper auto guy as people talk highly of his assemblies.

And yeah, I've even seen a few people talking about seizing 5th gen calipers too now...so between that and the fact I can get the 4th gen ones painted from the factory and not have to worry about the warranty being and issue if it happens again...I think the 4th gen sport upgrade almost makes more sense.

Didn't do the seal on the rear of the knuckle, but I believe the inner seal was taken care of as part of the hub assembly.

Sport brakes are great :D Just make sure you get decent pads so they don't deposit like mine were when I bought it. Vibrations really kill the brake feel......

Cool, thanks for the help. After a little research, I found this kit that I can do for nearly the same cost ($350 for calipers, pads, and rotors) and it's powder coated. Not crazy about the red but it'll look sporty

It's been a while since the 4R got some major upgrade love (which means it's been out doing fun things!) but I ended up finally ordering a light bar for the roof rack, and everything to run a 100w solar charging setup to my aux battery to keep it topped off. As well as some different exhaust gaskets to try to quiet my poor leaky header to y pipe connections from the custom flanges I used with my DT headers. Sent plans to get an air compressor mount made up to mount the ARB twin in front of the airbox, AND finally a 4 switch blank to try to put into the sunglass holder cause TiN hasn't made another run of mounts yet!

That's a thought. Not sure what type of material I would like on there. I don't like using a screen protector on my $1000 smartphone so not sure how I'd like it personally on a $40 piece of plastic. Interesting idea though.

I replaced my front sway bar bushings with Prothane's greasable version and wasn't impressed on the short test drive afterward. Steering felt the same and if anything, there was more lean in the curves. I double-checked the torque specs and they're right. Feels like a waste of time and money at the moment but I'm reserving final judgment pending more miles. Wondering if I went astray as to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

On another note, I heard and felt the skid plates doing their job a time or two during the Kentucky Toyota Trail Ride in July. Removed the front one today for easier access to the sway bar bushings and indeed found battle scars. Cleaned them up and hit the whole area with Rust Reformer before reinstalling it.

I did the 5th gen rear caliper with 4th gen slotted stop tech rotors today. Did Stoptech ss caliper lines.

Here's the direct links to the details otherwise the above is just the cliff notes version.

Bluesky 07 , installed the greaseable bushings, and also not impressed with them, my trunk still thunks on bumps

I no longer feel bad about my oops moment today. I mean, my dog's oops moment.

How did you do it? How big are your tires?

Broke the front diff mount on a rock. Introduced excess play into the front diff allowing the CV to break while accelerating and the rear diff shredded when all the power got sent to the rear. Oh and the diff also rotated up into the oil pan ;)

At shop rate, ~$7k in damage :wow2:

On the bright side, ins covered my claim and totaled it. Replacement parts are ordered and it should be up and running by the end of next week

Buttoned up the rear and tore down the front. Not much happening. Rotors seized so I gotta go get some long bolts from the hardware store.

I got three little things finished today.

1: Replaced one of the two cigarette lighter sockets in my smokers kit with a blusea systems USB charger: https://imgur.com/G6XQyQm

I also made it another step toward getting my subwoofer controller to sit in the ashtray, but that step is also the point where I realized it wont be possible to do the way I want. oh well.

2: finalized my 3rd brake light flasher installed. I really should have recorded what I did, but I only did one thing of note. so here is what I bought: http://a.co/d/c5xQQLh

I followed the install instructions exactly in terms of wiring. I mounted it to the metal bracket supporting the LED assembly in the spoiler, which allowed me to mount it in the default orientation. Theres a plastic tab hanging off the light assembly towards the drivers side, in which I mounted a momentary-on 7mm push button switch I got at microcenter: NTE Electronics Pushbutton Off-(On) SPDT - Micro Center, no modification required to add the switch. Made it much easier to program.

Truthfully, you could do this install without removing the spoiler. Toyota recommends that you replace 2 clips any time you remove the spoiler, but if you're careful when removing it, or dont remove it in the first place, theyre fine as is.

3: Finally fixed my AUX input with the Scion T1819 headunit. it takes a single 2.7k resistor to complete. If you install(ed) one of these units in a 4r, the adapter cable you need offers a really easy way to add the resistor.

On the body harness side, theres a 20pin connector, and you can use the resistor to bridge the wires that populate pin 19 (AUX detection) and pin 18 (ground/shield). The aux ground wire, since it's also used as a shield, is exposed underneath a protective rubber sleeve. I cut off the end of the sleeve, then put a dab of solder there before taping it. the other end, I removed about a mm of the jacket on the wire from pin 19 (Red and black on my harness) wrapped the end of the resistor wire around it tightly, dab of solder and more tape.

Only other thing I might do today is order tires. I might end up waiting to see if I can get a better price on falken wildpeaks.

DAMN! I thought it was bad when my rear end destroyed itself. I think I would do an SAS and put f350 axles on at this point. would probably be cheaper.
