What did you do with your 4runner today?

Got back from a road trip to Banff, AB. Amazing views and spectacular weather while we were there. 3500 miles and the only thing wrong is the passenger window switch stopped working (ordered a new switch today)

Calculated gas mileage during the trip: Kept gas receipts and tracked mileage
averaged 18.5
Low 16 (ND ethanol gas and Montana speeds into a headwind...)
High 21 (Cruising the Icefields Parkway seeing the sights)
Not bad for a loaded down V8 with full time 4WD! Granted it's stock, but can't complain. Funny thing is... it's at 84k. It's averaged less than 6k/yr until I bought it...

Replaced all four roof rack boots. I rolled the dice on cheap Ebay replacements. They seem OK.

I joined the club today and snapped a skid plate bolt. I've been hearing some metal rattling in my front end when I hit bumps so I thought maybe my front sway bar or end links might have loosened up after some time. I put bilstein 5100s up front, replaced the sway bushings and replaced the sway end links last year so I thought maybe something came loose. I also removed my skid plates to check around there. Its hard to check for loose front end stuff by hand because everything seemed tight and I couldn't find the culprit. When putting the skids back on, I snapped one of the bolts. I'm going to pick up some new stainless ones later today.

I was able to extract the broken piece which was kind of deep in the hole. Luckily how it snapped, it left a raised fin in the middle. I first sprayed with penetrating oil, then heated up the cross member around the threads with a torch then used a punch and a hammer to hammer it counter clockwise. I was trying to avoid drilling/retapping. I had to sharpen my punch a few times with a file, reheat the surrounding area a few times and probably about 20 minutes of hammering but eventually it came out. I swear, everytime I do anything to this truck, its 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Between rusty fasteners and snapped bolt heads, Toyotas should come with a dremel/angle grinder because a hint of rust will slow any and all progress on maintenance/repairs. I've had to cut more bolts off than I can count.

I’ve been seeing this strange “wear?” Pattern on my tires, all 4 but more prominent on the rear tires
I had a rotate, balance and alignment done about 500 miles ago but haven’t noticed much difference
This is the rear driver side tire for reference with the “dirty” side of the tire towards the front and the darker non sandy side of the lugs towards the rear of the car
Any ideas on causes?

How old are your shocks?

Year and a half old bilstein 5100s
Looks like they're cupping to me - which is typically caused by worn out suspension or bad alignment. I'd double check the alignment specs - things like slightly bad wheel bearings can throw the alignment off so that it looks better than it is (ran into this yesterday when I tried to get mine aligned -___- ). Maybe take it somewhere that does a free alignment check.

From googling, it looks like that kind of cupping is common on the ST Maxx when one of those two things are off. I'd just check everything suspension-wise, as something's likely worn out and causing it. The only other thing I can think of would be tire pressure. Not sure if it'd be too high or too low though, as those usually have different symptoms.

Cupping is also caused by incorrect air pressure, and/or heavy braking. May be as simple as airing up your tires some more.

Several items today:

1) Okay T4Rmiller, you were right...I hated having my phone partially blocking my HU's screen.

Before

So I bought this metal plate and an 8-pack of #6-32 x 38" machine screws at Home Depot and modified the mount to raise the phone enough to clear the screen. After measuring & marking where 90-degree bends were needed, I clamped the plate into my handy Workmate and used a wood block to bend them. The larger bend needed a couple of hammer blows to flatten out properly.

I Plastidipped the plate and screws and cut the top plate off the old mount, drilled a couple of holes in it, and bolted it to the top of the new plate. I really didn't want to disassemble the dash again so I figured out a way to use screws and washers to "clamp" the bottom of the new plate to the part of the old mount that comes out of the dash. That's the reason for the bottom 90-degree bend, to have the new plate slide under the edge of the dash for more support.

I was pleasantly surprised to find it 1) achieved the goal and 2) is rock solid.

2) Upgraded my spare by paying Discount Tire $50 out the door for a two-year-old Cooper tire w/ 50% tread left. The condition of my previous spare never bothered me around town but we got a flat on the way home from a recent road trip. Four hours of driving remote stretches on an 8-year-old tire that had about 20% tread left, with no spare, convinced me it was time to get something better.

3) Got my new fob painted and assembled. Hats off to AJT DESIGN - the fob is solid, well-made, and the shipping was incredibly fast. It came with an Allen wrench for assembly and a reference to online instructions. I bought the black front and white back knowing I would paint the back with the matching dark red that's in my Satoshi emblem letters. Used a sharpie to color in the TRD and gave it a couple of coats of satin clearcoat. The look isn't perfect close up but it looks fine from a distance and I'm not worried about aesthetics anyway given how much a key fob is handled.

I hate having anything block my view out the windshield

Same here. Blockage out the windshield is minimal; the pic of the new setup in my post is from a lower angle than eye level (note position of the steering wheel) so it doesn't really give a true perspective.

Awesome, it looks a lot better. I think I mentioned my work van in the other comment. The thing I used the display for was the clock when filling out paperwork. even though I have a watch I was just so used to looking at the radio and with my phone mounted there I had to look under it everytime lol. didnt last long

2019 4Runner suspension (same runner I got the wheels from). Note: I also have the Daystar 2.5/1.5 installed. Gave me an extra inch at all four corners. UCA's swapped in also.

I’ve been low key looking for a unicorn 3rd gen to mildly build and daily drive. That or a first gen taco.

Buddy of mine just bought a suuuper clean 1st gen Taco and I'm so jealous.

He then found a set of King coilovers for a ridiculously good price just to rub it in -__-
