What did you do with your 4runner today?

I have Steel-it coming in today but won’t paint it for another week or so. I want to figure out all my lighting before I paint it. Don’t know if I want amber or white flood lights in the square holes. I don’t mind spending half a hour knocking off surface rust. Did you not want to grind down your joints so they were flush after you were done welding?


My issue with putting it together is that the first few pieces wouldn’t square up perfectly. I am by no means a professional but I have fabricated motorcycle cages and have made my own parts. I had the help of my friend who is a welder for Tesla so there was plenty of experience on hand when putting the bumper together.

No I decided to leave the welds be lol. I have both amber and white Baja Designs Squadron Sports in the bumper. The Amber provide far more visibility in low light conditions. I got stuck in a hell of a rainstorm the other day and the ambers did much better than the white. This may also be because the amber are the “wide cornering” variation, whereas the white are the “driving combo”.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Steel-It. Post some photos when it’s painted!

Edit: the BD lights are a hair too big to fit in the holes, they mount just behind them like my ambers in that photo. Just a heads up. I believe a more square pod would likely fit better.

I gave this poor fellow, a juvenile black vulture, a lift to the emergency vet after capturing him in someone’s yard. His other leg was horribly broken and he had internal injuries too so he’s with God now.

I didn’t have nearly as bad of an experience. I did order the standard bumper and no custom changes requested, which I believe any company would charge you for. The figment was ok for me, the only thing lacking a bit were the instructions. Someone a bit more experienced with this type of fab work/welding would have ended up with a better looking bumper than me, but I’m happy. Pic for reference.

Also, paint that thing before it completely rusts over lol.

I was looking into replacing my front bumper with Coastal's since the have such a high clearance.

Did they send it to you unpainted or powder coated? Also they send it without fully gridding down the welds? Thx

It’s a weld together kit. Meaning you have to weld it yourself or hire someone and then have it painted or powder coated.

No problem. If you can find someone who won’t charge a ridiculous amount to weld it it’ll still be cheaper than most other options. Good luck!

The LCD temp gauge was halfway lit so I needed to change out the bulb. Thanks to this forum and the links to YouTube, the replacement was a 10 minute job. Super easy and only costed $14 to replaced 2 bulbs (might as well replace both and keep the working bulb as a backup).

Here's what I did so far today:
HCF delete
K&N Performance filter
Put in "cut to fit" weather mats
Changed out the following lights with LEDs:
Door lights, map lights, reverse lights and license plate lights

On order to be done by tomorrow:
3rd brake light LED
Rear turn signal LEDs
Dome light LEDs

Also gave it a wash and quick wax. In the near future I'll be getting some Bilstein 5100s. I've also been hearing to replace the low beam headlights as they are pretty bad from factory? Any particular brand y'all recommend?

Put Lucas oil fuel treatment in after my last fill up and after 1/2 tank the onboard computer shows +2 mpg over its usual readout
FWIW nothing else has really changed in my usual day to day driving since the treatment

I had some seepage coming from one of my cam seals. I replaced them yesterday. Not a difficult job but time consuming. I was not ready for a new timing belt so that made the job a little more frustrating as you have to do pretty much the same stuff as if you were replacing it.

Went ahead with these and also bought some amber yellow LEDs for the fogs, they will be arriving today! Thanks for the suggestion!

Added some “raptor style lights” and routed two more power wires for a under the hood work light in the future. Made sure to go through the factory grommet to keep everything water resistant.

I wanted to run three lights but I could not make them symmetrical without cutting the oem grill. I will also try and dim them down a bit with a resistor or two.

So my exhaust broke off at the muffler the other day and the tailpipe vanished somewhere.. so I set up a temporary fix to direct the exhaust until I get a kit...


Also did a yearly diff fluid change. Trying out the Redline heavy shock proof.

Had it serviced at my local Toyota dealership. Got a transmission flush and a 4 wheel alignment, my toe was out of spec. Now she's shifting smoother and riding a LOT better.

Also put in the rest of the LEDs I missed(interior dome, 3rd brake light) also put in the Auxbeam low beam LEDs and Alla Amber fog lights and holy CRAP what a difference! Much easier to see and the white/yellow balance looks badass.

I still have to install my turn signal LEDs, I tried but they were hyper-blinking so after research I ordered an Novita EP35 from Diode Dynamics to replace the flasher relay. Hopefully it arrives before the weekend!

Next up:

Running board removal
Bilstein 5100s all around
DA Polish
Diff fluid change. 75w90 gear oil right? Mobil One synthetic?
