What did you do with your 4runner today?

Swapped out the XREAS for TRD off road Tacoma spring/struts and rear shocks. Added 1.5" spacer in the back as well.

Haven't had anything to post in a spell. Been waitin' on parts for a suspension overhaul. Plus, this time of year my time's spent on preparin' the home acreage for Spring and Summer... Sawing and prunin' out forest growth to reduce the severity of wildfire when it inevitably comes (burned in '08 and '17). If you've never had to work in poison oak but are used to poison ivy, well, consider yourself lucky. Even though it's not leafed out yet, poison oak is one itchy mofo.

But here's somethin' with the 4R that provides a little entertainment value to a Sunday. Needed to tighten all four wheel spacers after about 100 miles since installation. Figured while I had the front wheels off it was a good time to remove the mud flaps. Upon removin' the passenger side, it became apparent that there was a bunch of debris, including sand, packed into the lower body edge behind the mud flap. (Where the screwdriver is shown stickin' in.)

Turns out some damn mouse, before my ownership, thought this was a dandy spot to nest up. Used what looked to be chewed up blue insulation and/or blanket. I say before my ownership because of the apparent road sand packed into the mess - loads of it - and it's not used here. Nor have I driven it in sand. And the prior owner's cabin air filter was mouse chewed, replaced now with a HEPA filter. Looked as though these mud flap nest materials plugged the bottom body holes where sand might've been able to fall or wash out, makin' a perfect setting for accumulation of moisture and rust.

Sure not a predictable place for a mouse problem!
Sheesh.
:lmao:
I’ve had kangaroo mice get into my cabin filter from time to time. Sounds like I need to check that portion of fender too. Wouldn’t hurt I guess.

The battery left the wife & daughter stranded again yesterday. Optoma Red Top mfg 1/19. This was the third time in the last 3 months. I can't put my girls in an unreliable vehicle. Advance Auto replaced it with a brand new Yellow Top for an even exchange. It wasn't my first choice, but it's installed now. Oddly, the negative clamp never got tight. I had to run out for some battery terminal shims.

Also put a new 2016 battery into the key fob. Can you use 2032 batteries in the key fob? I've got tons of them around, but didn't have any 2016's.

Spent a few minutes tonight adding a mouse guard on my ventilation air intake.

I used some extra coated steel gutter leaf guard which just happened to be black and added a split silicone vacuum hose to protect the firewall paint.

I finally finished with the storage box I've been building. It doesn't have drawers, it has two hinged lids. Didn't want to spring for the cost of the drawer slides right now. I also built in an open storage at the front where the back of the seats lean back creating a triangle shaped area. It's perfect for small items but especially good for hiking poles and umbrellas. It also has a slide out table. My wife and I have picnics almost daily when we're in the NC mountains, which is a lot. Having the slide out table means I don't have to haul a folding one with us. I know it's not as fancy as many of the drawer systems I've seen on here but it'll suffice for now. And I've got less than $150 in it. Hope I can remember how to post pics, lol.

This is more or less a follow up to my post above. After completing the box I realized that if the lids were open the hatch couldn't close without hitting the inside corners of the lids with the back window. So today I cut off the inside corners in a kind of triangle shape, then attached the cut off corners to the top of the box where they would normally be when the lids are closed. So now it looks normal when the lids are closed and the hatch can close without making contact when the lids are open. Probably not very often that I would need to close the hatch with the lids open but I wanted to be able to in case the need ever arose. Oh, and I painted bedliner on the exposed areas I cut and put another coat on the lids for good measure.

That’s good to know because all of mine need to be replaced. The black rubber strip along the bottom has come off 3 of my 5 windows.

Any other tips?
There wasn't much more to the rear than that. For the other windows, I'm not sure. Haven't had to replace em yet.

Planned a quick 15 min job to replace the foam/grille insulator piece that sits behind the grille and hood.

Of course 6/8 nuts are seized and or spin, looks like I will be cutting them off and getting new hardware...

Installed a 10.1” Joying head unit. So far, so good. I still need to run the backup camera but otherwise I’m happy with it.

Installed Blue Pit hub assemblies on the '05 4Runner, and replaced the sway bar end links because I kept getting a clunk going over pot holes. Turned out the mysterious 4Runner clunk was the air box bumping against the fender due to the foam filler around it being shot.
Also painted the hood on my '07 with bedliner. The Arizona sun destroyed the clear coat.

I put on some new wheels and tires today. Well at least new to me. A few weeks ago I was able to pick up a used set from a 2020 Tacoma. I also polished out the yellow headlights using a 3M restoration kit.

Took the dogs for a Spring spin up the mountain from the house. Looked for morels and oyster mushrooms on creekside alders, hiked a little, the dogs swam in ice cold run-off, and I practiced with the Kimber.

Easy, fun drive in the 4R, 'though we did have to dodge fallen trees and rocks while drivin' through forest areas burned in '17. Calm, beautiful weather today, but not a place to be on a windy day. Next time I'll pack a chainsaw. :lookout:

Got to ask...what were you aiming at?

The ex-wife holdin' the target.
:lmao:

(Don't judge... First time I've physically been able to shoot in two years. My spine couldn't handle recoil from anything more than a .22. Just glad to be able to exercise my rights before they're gone.)
