Brakes on '08 (aka opened a can of worms)

Started replacing pads & rotors on my 08. I've had here about 5 months. My RL was sticking and smoking.

Found my FL caliper locked up. Ordered replacements for FL & FR. Also found hard lines attached to the front calipers! W.T.F. Over?!?

I have flexible steel braded lines ordered, now to just find the PN for the Fitting circled in red.. anyone?! out:

I have no manual and haven't had much luck finding it.

To buy that short steel brake line from the flex hose to the caliper from Toyota and OEM it's going to cost a minimum of $30 to $35 for just one front caliper!!

I had my driver's side break, so no brakes at all and I drove 90 miles home on a Thanksgiving night because nothing was open and couldn't afford to tow it that far, I used my parking brake and downshifting to stop with no issues, no real traffic to speak of so I was lucky.

That being unnecessarily said, I went to the auto part store and bought a straight piece with the correct size "Japanese" fittings and the correct length and very carefully not to kink it bent it to shape, it cost me $2 to $3 for the brake line and with a quart bottle of brake fluid lees than $10 overall!!

Take the entire steel line with you to make sure you get one with the correct fittings and length and take your time bending it, you could even get a couple extras in case you do kink one or two trying and still come out WAY ahead over the OEM replacements!!

I'm getting ready to go supertrucking with my T4R. I've got some home improvements coming up and big boss at work is letting me borrow his flatbed to make things easier. Because the flatbed has brakes on both axles, I ordered a trailer brake controller and got it installed. Pretty neat, super easy install. Turns out some (if not all?) of the 4th gens had a plug for brake control preinstalled under the dash. Mine was on the back of one of the harnesses behind the drivers side kick panel. Install could not have been easier. Only thing left is I need to get a metric nut from work tomorrow and put the ground ring terminal on one of the studs up under the dash. As it turns out, the only nuts I have are American

I thought that 85 was a typo until I zoomed in on the pictures. These have my interest for my third gen, a skinny 34" tire.

Any idea what they weigh and how they're generally reviewed? I didn't even know that size existed until now.

I thought that 85 was a typo until I zoomed in on the pictures. These have my interest for my third gen, a skinny 34" tire.

Any idea what they weigh and how they're generally reviewed? I didn't even know that size existed until now.

After he posted the photo I searched to find the weight because they look a bit heavy, what I found was 65+ lbs, so if true definitely going to be a hit on the MPGs.

They are basically a Brand new tire by Mickey Thompson with 3 ply sidewalls, 3 peak snowflake rating, and made in the USA. There aren't extensive reviews yet but any feedback I've seen has been overwhelmingly positive.

They look good, and a 50k mile treadwear warranty is good for LT off-road tires. 64 lbs isn't terrible. My ST Maxx in 255/80/17 are 58 or 62. I can never remember, either way only a few pounds less. I don't need 34s, but I would love to have them. MPG on the 3rd gen went out the window a long time ago

Last night I replaced the LR rotor & pads without issue.
The RR however, I found completely covered in diff fluid. So now it's seal replacement time.
Hopefully the bearing is good but we'll see!

I'm old as dirt and back when I was growing up most everyone knew how to use the "parking brake" if needed, but back then it was most commonly know as the "emergency brake", my father made sure myself and my 8 brothers and sisters knew how to use the emergency brake and down shifting in case of brake failure to be able to stop and if needed to get you home, I have used this knowledge many times over the years, and my kids know how to do the the same!!

Some Test Fitting and comparisons- 255/85/17 Baja Boss AT vs 285/75/17 Ridge Grapplers

I cycled the rear up and down with the jack and looks like clearance is no problem, I Have bump stop extensions on there now, and im adding Durobump extended bump stop onto the extensions this weekend so no fenders will be popping off in the rear at least lol.

Replace the schrader valves and add dye/oil to the system. Makes it easier to find leaks in the future. Mine was leaking from the condenser lower line.

use the sight glass when you recharge. Stop once the sight glass has no bubbles (engine at 1500 rpm). Using weight gets you close, but the sight glass gets you there.

One more note, there is an interior temp sensor just below the the ignition key. Blow compressed air into the opening in the dash. It gets coated in dust over the years. It Made a big difference to my ac.

Any other symptoms prompting the recharge (ie: blowing warm on passenger side, etc.)? The evaporator core is suspect after 10+ years, easy to confirm by putting dye in the system and checking the A/C discharge for traces of dye (and/or freon sniffer in the vents).

That said, you have a tremendously slow leak and it's a considerable amount of effort to r/r the evaporator core, so I'd tend to let it ride if I were you until you're having more frequent issues.

One other thing you can replace that's cheap/low effort are the schrader valves on the H/L sides as well as the caps - those would be commiserate with the amount of refrigerant you're losing.

nope, no other symptoms, both sides were even. yeah I saw a post about how much work the evap core is, so that's gonna be a big no for me!

I scored at the junkyard last week pulling from an 07 limited T4R 2WD. I pulled all 4 door panels with black wood inserts, absolutely beautiful. Didn't even know that Toyota made that trim. Got the HVAC controls, gauge cluster, gauge panel, right LED tail light (left one was gone, hmu if you got one for sale lol), E7008 touchscreen NAV headunit, and JBL speakers.

Installed the door panels and speakers. Wow they're amazing. How much difference in sound quality is awesome. And the black wood on the door panels is gorgeous.

Found out i got get another $250 in wiring harnesses for the E7008 headunit so I'm just going to sell that along with my other silver/black suede door panels.

How long do i have to wait till i can sell on the classifieds?
