What do you guys think of this 1988 4runner

Starting to look for a 1st gen as a project car. This seems nice and a decent price. May go look at it next week.

With the 3.0 and IFS, you're definitely on the right track for that project you're looking for.

Second that. 3.0 is problematic, engine compartment is too crowded- you would hate working on it yourself- and 22R-E is more reliable and engine compartment is much roomier to work on.

Keep in mind your not limited to Toyota engines. Many guys have successfully swapped many more powerful and fuel efficiency motors into the Toyota platform. And the cost to do so for most engines is the same a a complete rebuild of a 22RE or 3.slow engine
I ditched both those engines along time ago. I did a 3.4L in my 85 4runner then sold the truck for twice what I had in into it. And currently I'm putting a turbo diesel in a 87 pickup sitting on a 85 4runner frame.
The entire swap has cost me less then $2500.
So just a thought as you look around at trucks the engine is not the critical part! The body in good shape and rust free is!!

you are gonna wanna pull/peel off some of that sticky on diamond plate crap that is stuck on the wheel wells to check for rust. Bet someone is using that for camoflage...

be sure to ask the owner what happened to that center console- was it lost during trouble shooting the rear window switch or what?

Looks like it is missing some lug nuts too- that shows a lack of proper maintenance to me

Missing rear headrests- easy to find but nice to have from the get go

The 3.0 with an Auto is a slug...ask me how I know.
Nice thing is that if you throw a 3.4 in, it totally transforms the truck
