What do you hate about your T4R?

I've only owned my 3rd gen for about a month, but there are a few things I really enjoy about my 4runner.

- Slide down rear window. I can drive with the moonroof open and the rear window down and get good airflow but not a lot of noise at 65mph.
- rear leg room. My XJ had significantly less legroom which is important when you have two boys, ages lots of engergy 4years and gigantic car seat 8months
- rear seats fold flat. Great for hauling a bunch of crap
- 19.8mpg. Not bad for 6500ft elevation! My XJ struggled to get 15mpg
- Beast in the snow. We had a late winter storm, T4R worked perfectly.
- Easy to modify. The 5100/Tundra lift and 231mm brake upgrade are the easiest mods I've ever done! Great stuff

The 5 Speed Manual transmission in an SUV ! Can't find that anywhere else.
The rear window, the concrete underneath it has NO oil drips.
LOL
 
The list goes on and on. But here are a few points:

1) It's a toyota truck that actually has enough power to get out of its own way. For those of you familiar with older toyotas, you know what I'm talking about.
2) Factory locker in a US-market vehicle is hard to come by
3) Easy to work on for a modern-ish vehicle
4) Decent MPG for a truck that you can actually take wheeling
5) They are all over the damn place, so finding parts is easy and cheap
 
Why is it so many 4runner owners are "previous" xj owners? Myself included,I loved my xj for its raw utility,160k on a lifted 98 xj but you cant deny the massive quality difference between the two,the 4runner FEELS engineered while the chyrsler feels slapped together.:thumb3:
 
I love that the 3rd gens have aged so well. They still have a very nice, classy look when done right, and they don't look old and outdated.

Ah yes, I fogot to mention how much I like having a manual!

I think it's because every once in a while a company manufactures a vehicle, not to hit sales targets, but to build the best car they can. These usually survive time and often form a cult status.

Others I think fall into this group besides the XJ
- Toyota AE86
- Jeep Wrangler (all of them)
- BMW E30 (i'm partial though)
- 70's merc diesels
- datsun 510
- corvair
- 1st miata
- Origonal Mini
- 1st NSX (these are 20k now!!!)
 
First and foremost is the quality, nuff said. I also really love the multimode "AWD" in my 2000 LTD, it was great on icy mountain roads this winter with mixed patches of dry and ice, MM allowed me to leave it on and have just that much extra security and traction.

I also really like the split personality, it can chug up a snow or muddy mountain road with ease, but washed up it can cruise comfortably all day on the freeway or look right in an upscale suburb or city.

True that ,I cant remember the last "4runner" ad I've seen,they are the quiet beasts on the road. I am glad i didnt pay my sticker of $37.700 back in 1998! I am OK with my purchase price of $3800 though:dance:
 
I love that my 3rd gen is so refined and well built, yet simple in nature. I had a 2nd gen 95 4Runner which was slow and unrefined in comparison (but also a great truck).

IMO, the 3rd gen is one of the best trucks made by Toyota (other than the Land cruiser...but those are $$$). The previous generation, although still great trucks, had infamous head gasket problems and low on power. The generation after saw the loss of the manual transmission and became more soccer mom tailored.
 
I love my 2WD 1997 LTD for the fact that even before my lift I could still get back to nature, now with the lift, crawling over stumps, sliding through mud puddles and what not make getting my MTB and camping gear even easier to get back into the woods!
 
1. Ladies dig them.
2. The J-stick for the 4wd. None of that turn dial stuff.
3. Its rugged and outdoorsy yet its not a poser truck.
4. The rear seats folding down for a bed.
5. The most obvious, the roll down rear window.
 
I love the fact that it's such a durable truck, yet for its age it still looks like a more modern vehicle than it is. People have asked me if it was a 2006 model!! Yet when I tell them that this body style was produced from 96-02, it blows their mind.

I also like that I can take it to the beach and have a good time with it, wash it, then take it to a 5 star hotel and attract more attention and thumbs up than the S-Class or M5 that are parked beside me (true story) :D

3. The way it looks (aesthetics)
4. Back seat heater (daughter loves it)
5. A lot of people don't like the ADD system for 4wd but I love it.
6. Offroad capability!
 
I'm sure I'm essentially "seconding" what everyone else has said, but:

--21 MPG average on the highway (when I can keep it around 68 MPH or under)
--Beautiful aesthetics
--Bomber 4wd for both off-road and snow
--Rear window (who doesn't love it?)

The only thing I don't like is it isn't a 5spd...working on remedying that with my eyes on one right now.

I agree, I've had my truck just over a week but I am constantly getting compliments from lots of random people who think it is MUCH newer than it is. I love the refinement of the vehicle, I love that I don't have a payment!:eyebrows:
 
1. The fact that in stock form sits just as high as my bros lifted xj and technically i have bigger tires then he does. me- 265/75/16 = 32'' him- 31x10.50x15 and hes lifted about 3.5''
2. Reliability, you guys with 260xxx even 400xxx give me hope.
3. Alot more room then a cherokee.
4. Rear window is pretty cool, dunno when ill find a use for it but it is pretty cool.
5. its really comfy, while cruising
6. Seems as half this board has either owned a jeep in their past lol
7. The gears ( from what ive read i believe i have 4.10's)
seriously though, alot of you guys give me hope for mine. I'm a newb when it comes to yotas, esp 4runners but im not giving up.
