What Do You Use...and Why?

I just hit 1000 mi on my 4R and switched to Mobil 1. I really doubt you can do much better than Mobil 1. I plan to use Toyota oil filters and stay with their recommendation of an oil change at 5,000 mi. The price of Mobil 1 at Wally World is about the cheapest I've been able to find it.

I would probably buy Mobile 1 but their availability for the gear oil and lube was non-existant so I just joined Amsoil and got everything in one shot.
So how about oil filters--not too much feedback on those, which are arguably just as important to your protection? Whatdya' use...and again, why? I thought Bob is the oil guy's analysis of filters was very interesting, but how does that play out with us guys who have 4Runners specifically?
And those who have had oil analysis, we would love to see some results!

I've had good results from PureOne filters from Puralator and ran those for 5 years in my very drag raced Eclipse turbo and it worked very well and it kept the oil lines going in and out of the turbo very clean and that was important since those lines aren't very big. They aslo don't cost much and clean as well as the Mobile 1 and K&N oil filters which cost about $5 more.
I'm now on my 2nd one in my Runner right now.
There is a site somewhere that the filters were tested and cut in half to show the big differences.

I would hope your Toyota can make to 37,000 miles without any oil related failures. I would hope that is nothing to brag about, like my kid graduated from 3rd grade or something...Toyota should go 150,000 without ANY failure given basic PM routine. Even my Tahoe made it to 143,000 before the engien crapped out and even the second engine made another 130,000....just need another alternator...the 4th one!
Just change the oil every 5,000 miles and fuggetabout the syn oil dino oil bull crap. I changed over to Castrol syn at the dealer at 20k after running dino juice for the first 20k. plan to keep changing it at 5,000.
We're running 105 degrees for last week and this week. Then "cool" down to 100-103 degrees......syn oil would do my engine a bit of good. But the imporatnat thing is just to change the oil eveyr 5,000.

In 1996, Consumer Reports did a huge and extensive test of motor oils. They put identical rebuilt engines in New York taxis and ran 'em for 60k miles with 6k oil change intervals. Two synthetics were included, Mobil 1 and Pennzoil. They disassembled the engines at the end and measured tolerances and deposits.
Conclusion? No meaningful difference, synthetics included.
I'm not a particularly big fan of Consumer Reports for a variety of reasons, but this looks to me to be the closest thing to useful scientific testing where the rubber meets the road as opposed to UOA where the effects of the results are theoretical.
The above, coupled with Toyota's recommendation of dino oil and the caveat about not switching back to dino if synthetic is used, are good enough for me.

I was originally going to use dino throughout the life of my car. At 25,000 miles, I took it in for an oil change and the dealer decided to put in M1 and said I could switch back and forth. I was skeptical because I've heard that once you go synthetic you should stick with it. After doing some searching on the Toyota website, I found this: click, which states not to change between synthetic and regular, so I've stuck to M1 ever since with an OEM filter.

As far as filters go I use the manfactures filter for that car. I have used Castrol GTX for over 25 years and found it very good, 4 cars with over 200,000 miles.
When I got the 4Runner I used Castrol GTX at first, but went on a long trip and switch to Mobil 1. I was impressed with the oil. The engine ran smoother, I got better mileage, not much, 1/3 to 1/2 MPG but it was there. The oil color at the end of 5,000 miles was lighter brown then the Castrol GTX was at 3,000 miles. Since Mobil 1 is readily available and competitive in price, I changed to Mobil 1.
I still use Castrol GTX in my older high mileage cars though.

I personally use Amsoil 5W-30 ASL and that is the "25k" oil. However I will change my oil when Blackstone Labs (UOA) tells me its time. I will the switch to the Amsoil TSO 0W30.
I am approaching my first Used oil analysis interval with this run of Amsoil on the runner (5k). I will of course post the analysis when I get it. However, IMHO AMsoil and M1 are the best Syn Oils on the market, and Castrol Make the best Dino Oil.
I use either Amsoil/OEM/or WIX filters. Right now I have Amsoil SDF57 on. At 5k I will change out to either a OEM filter I have laying around or Wix (Napa Gold). I will base thier performance in the runner on the UOA.
IMO Amsoil filters are a little overpriced even at dealer cost. I got the wix filters form napa online shipped to my door for 5 bucks each. I personally think that Oil filters should cost 5 bucks max! I hope that you read up on Amsoil , it is of course a Synthetic oil and it has been around longer than any other syn oil.
Plus its american owned and operated, something that most oil companys cannot say anymore!

I'll really celebrate if I get to 50k. LOL Seriously, I've got 220k on the Pathfinder, and it burns zero oil. I would certainly expect the 4Runner to do 300k - plus I'm gonna treat 'er very well (learned some things from the Pathfinder & forums, etc.).olliebear said:

No 2 engines are the same. What works in one won't work in all. My current V8 is nothing like the Acura V6.
I don't drive a lot anymore. So I won't analyze different oils in the 4Runner to see which is best. Once I switch, I will analyze the Amsoil at 25k.
I buy my oil from a small auto parts shop, not Wal-mart. I try to do business with the little guy. I also get Wix oil filters there. I think they are good quality. Amsoil and Mobil 1 also make a nice filters.
