What gas grade are you running?

So the title should indicate what this is going to be about. But getting to my point, I am considering running the rest of the 87 in the tank out now and then maybe running about half a tank of Premium just to gain an idea of the combustion/performance difference. Not that the rig is too under-powered but in theory, wouldn't the higher grade fuel give you that v8 feel? Thoughts/opinions on this from anyone who has already done this or anyone who was maybe thinking of doing the same?:shrug:

I have a 03 V8 a d I ran a full tank or 2 of Shell Perimum and didn't feel a difference.

Oh this is going to be a fun thread... Certainly not a V8 feel, but the difference is noticeable.

I have been running 93 for the past month or so. On the same stretch of highway, on cruise control at 70, with 87 octane, I get 3 full downshifts, and a whole bunch of torque converter unlocking, with 93 not a single downshift and only 4 torque converter unlocks.

Because I am a nerd, I ran this both ways, on the same day, same temp/humidity, and running data logging with an OBD2 scanner measuring timing advance, throttle opening, ambient air temp, vehicle speed sensor, GPS logging, and other data points.

I've run premium a few times in mine and noticed no difference what so ever. Didn't do any mpg charts or HP dyno runs ,just good old seat of the pants feel . But Car and Driver and many others have done real world testing.....Test Results

I meticulously document each tank of gas, and I've gone between 87 and 93 octane a number of times on the same brand and different brands. There's been no appreciable nor consistent MPG difference between 87 and 93 octane fuels in similar driving conditions. I've never owned a V8 anything, so I don't know what the "V8 feel" really is, but people always tell me they're surprised at how much power my truck has when I floor it (with 87 or 93). .shrug. Either way, I don't feel any difference in how much power the truck has either in the low end or high end with higher octane fuel.

Also, just an FYI, I drove 433 miles today on my 285s, ~3" lift, full skids installed, with at least 500# payload and at an average speed of 68 MPH I averaged 18.5 MPG. :fro:

Maybe something is wrong with mine? With 265 C range tires, no lift, and only about 400lb (plus my fat 200lb ass) cargo, I get 14.6 per averaged tank full around town, and only hit 18 driving all highway at very moderate speed.

Your ECU is tuned for 87, run 87. If you are elevation, 85. If you run higher octane, you might get better mileage and performance from the decreased weight from removing the extra money from your wallet. Your ECU will compensate for the higher octane and adjust re**** the timing.

86 octane here that's all we have on-base. Off base we have 93 octane but i'm not going to pay 180 yen per liter for it.

I'd be interested in seeing your data logging mostly because 93 octane is a waste of fuel and money unless your engine is tuned for it.

I run 93 octane, 100% gas no ethanol. I'm definately getting marginally better mileage 10%-11% better so far. I don't believe I benifit from as high an octane as I'm using but that is what is available in 100% gas at a reasonable price.

I run 93 octane with no ethanol in two of my other vehicles because that is wha they require.

To clarify the increase in mileage was from the use of no ethanol in gas. I was getting about 10% worse fuel mieage when I was using gas mixed with ethanol.

Based on the computer read out on the vehicle that shows average miles per gallon. Each time I noted mileage was after using 1/2 tank of fuel.

I drive 80% city and I get 17 - 18mpg using 93/10% ethanol and get 16mpg running 89/10%. This is from the in-dash readout which was cleared for each tank of gas. I'll try it again but both times were done on a typical routine week of commuting to work.

For me, all gas except premium up here may contain up to 10% ethanol. If I use premium I keep ethanol out of my engine.

87 because anything else is a waste of money and fodder for me to ROTFLMBO when someone says their truck runs better or gets better MGP! You can get the same results by farting in the tank.
