What is this?

I just had my 2003 V8 4Runner timing belt replaced by an independent shop and when I checked things over, I see this little tube coming out from the side of the engine. Is there anything that's supposed to connect to it?

It looks like some kind of sensor but there is no wiring connected to it.

Could you take a look at yours? I couldn't find it in the shop manual.

If its anything like the 1gr than there should be a hose that connects that to the air intake. look at you air take and see if there are some loose connections. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but when I was changing my plugs there was a tube like that at the back and I think it has something to do with the fuel system or the fuel vapors. hope this helps

Mine is outside right now. I will look at it in a little bit.

Mean time. What did you end up paying for a timing at independent. Reason I am asking is I will have to do it on mine and dealer quoted me around 600 I think.

Edit: Just ran outside in the rain there is nothing connected to it. Disclaimer. I just got mine 4Runner last week, so haven't dissected it that much to know if something is missing or not.

Interesting. I'm looking at a Haynes manual and on page 6-18 at the bottom, there is a picture (for a V6 - illustration 16.7) of the PCV valve after the hose has been detached and it looks just like what the arrow is pointing to in your 2nd picture.

It says the v8 is similar, "... and the crankcase ventilation hose (PCV hose) connects the PCV valve on the left valve cover to a pipe between the throttle body and the intake manifold".

Anyone else with the 2003-2009 4runner haynes manual agree that illustration looks to show the same part?

** From the manuals available online it looks like on the V8 the PCV has a right angle so that's probably not it. Take a look at the '03 manual you can download online here and look at the Emmission control system diagrams: http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3070

I took it to an independent shop (a one-man shop) for $1000 out-the-door to have the following works done:

- timing belt/tensioner/idler/seals etc...
- driving belt
- new water pump (Denso)
- new thermostat
- new front Toyota brake pads + front rotor surfacing (the original pads lasted 92k miles and were worn to the pads wear grove indicator. I'm guessing there are probably a few thousand miles of life left)
- 8 Denso Iridium spark plugs

Is this a good price?
I'm in Socal.

My 2003 V8 does not have anything connected to it. It appears to be a temp sensor.

This is a picture from my 2003 V8. This some sort of sensor that seems unused in our application of the V8. It looks as if something would plug in to it. There is a small nub close to the bottom like an electrical or hose connection would lock on to. I could not get a view of the inside but, on the shadowed part of the picture I could see the nub where something would lock on. Maybe this is for another vehicle in some part of the Toyota line.

I used a dental mirror to look inside that tube and it looked like there is some kind of electrical pin in there. It does look like some kind of electrical sensor but it's not used on our 4R V8. Could you be for the engine block heater option or was there even an engine block heater option available for the 4R? If not, then it may be for other application (Landcruiser, Tundra?)

Considering that you had your brakes and plugs done at the same time I think it would be inline with what I was told by the local Toyota dealer.

Which is a heck of a lot cheaper then it was on my wifes full size Montero. OEM parts would have been over 600.

Yes, there is a block heater option ... I have one on my 03 T4R Limited 4WD. I suspect not much need for one in sunny California, but up here in Canada it comes in handy

Yes, there is a block heater option ... I have one on my 03 T4R Limited 4WD. I suspect not much need for one in sunny California, but up here in Canada it comes in handy

My best guess for the "unused tube" that is in the pics and discussed through this thread is that it may be the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.

It may appear to be "tube-like" in order to attach a diagnostic tool?

This "guess" is based on my view of the diagnostics location diagram in my 2003 T4R Factory Repair Manual.

The block heater would be installed on the lower portion of the engine block and not that high up.
