I have always thought one of the big attributes of the foreign cars was a higher standard of tolerance. When you build an engine or any other part you have to have an acceptable amount of variance.
One manufacturer might have an allowance of .01-.02. Where another might have .001-.002 as their allowable tolerance. Like when you rebuild an engine. You can just replace all the parts as they come out of the box. The engine will run. If you take the extra steps in blueprinting and balancing (a much higher standard) the engine parts, the motor will be smoother running, outperform and outlast the thrown together engine.
