What makes these trucks so reliable?

I worked in Kyoto for almost 3 years. From what I saw honor is still a very real thing in Japanese culture. Much more than it is to most American's.

Very true. Remember right after the first Gulf War, 22 Japanese soldiers were deployed to Iraq. This was Japan's first deployment of military outside of their country since the end of WWII? They were taken prisoner by terrorists and eventually set free. When they got home they were not looked upon fondly.
