What size and thread is 4wd shift knob screw?

I lost the screw that secures the 4wd low shifter knob when I replaced the auto's shifter bushings. It is part # 90159-40180 which is discontinued. I went to the local hardware store, the 3mm was too small, the 4mm was either too big or the wrong thread and they did not have any differing threads in metric 4. I see on the internet there is such a thing as a metric 3.5mm screw. Baffled.

Can anyone assist?

It may be a JIS M4-0.75mm. The ISO M4 thread pitch is 0.70 and what you see in the hardware store. No fine and coarse in M4. Those JIS M4-0.75 puppies are special use screws because apparently JIS went to the same 0.7 as ISO in like 1967. Good luck finding any. I'd consider retapping the hole to use the M4-0.7 or hit the junkyard.

That kind of info is pure gold. It sure looked like an M4 but threads did look different. I will add it to my list of junkyard search items.

If I retapped would I not go up a size to M5 say? Otherwise there would be a hash of both ) 0.70 and 0.75 threads...or am I missing something?

The result would not be pretty, but they are close enough that the hash might hold. If not, then yes, go up a size. I wouldn't do that on an LBJ; we are talking about a knob.

this one that says Discontinued.... yea the junk yard is the only place if you want exactly that fastener.

Bump!

I stripped mine but was able to take it out. As others mentioned, I couldn’t source a replacement but found a random screw in my garage that fit. Believe it’s a metric screw but didn’t check to see what it was. If someone needs to know, I can unscrew it and take it down to Home Depot to see.

Fairly certain it’s not a speciality screw but can confirm if anyone is looking for this screw.
