I've been looking at picking up a 2014-2016 Limited and am wondering what to look out for. Is a certified pre-owned car worth it over just a used one? Any years better than others?

Just make sure you give the car a good look over as you would with any other used car. These trucks are pretty bullet proof as long as they're properly maintained. Given that prices for used 4runners are still pretty high, depending on how many miles are on the car you're looking at, it may be worth it just to buy new.

check the usual things for sign of proper (or improper) care and service. Depending on the miles check the brakes and tires for excessive or uneven wear, overall condition, ext. As already mentioned depending on the year/miles may be worth a few K more to get into a brand new one.

Thanks guys, two of the main reasons I'm considering a 4Runner are the reliability and residual values of these trucks. I'm just not sure I can justify an extra $8-10k for a new one over a slightly used one, especially if the used one comes with a CPO warranty.
What are the thoughts of rear seats vs. the sliding rear deck? I like the idea of having the extra seats but can probably count on 1 hand the number of times people have been in the 3rd row of my parents 2001 Land Cruiser.

Anything 8-10k below sticker is going to have over 50k miles on it at least. Do you care about the miles? It's not going to be "slightly" used at all.
Unless you have a large family that third row is useless and the seats just add unecessary weight. If you have a very large family, a mini van would be much more practical. There's also mixed feelings about the pull out cargo tray as well. Some people like them, others don't.

Slightly used will only be $2-3 grand less than new. High mileage (say 60-80K) on a 2014 will still only be $5-6K less than new. Now if you go back to 2011 or 2012 with some mileage then $8-10K less will be the norm.
OP, the ONLY thing you will need to watch for on a 5th gen Limited is the XREAS suspension. Especially if it has 100K or so on it. Those can be expensive to repair but you can put a decent aftermarket conventional suspension on for under $1K.
I just picked up a 2014 LE 4X4 with 3rd row, 29k miles, Certified for $36k plus tax at a dealership in AZ three weeks ago.
Here in Socal, the exact same 4Runner, but new 2016, was $46 plus tax ++ so came out to $51k.....
I looked for months and finally found the right deal/4Runner, took a $108 flight from LAX to Phoenix and drove home. Saved $10+k
Couldn't be happier with my purchase!
The dealers here won't discount the 4Runner much, if at all. And one of my best friends is a Service Manager at a local Toyota Dealership, couldn't hook me up below $45 so I looked at the used market, 2014-15
However, if you want another trim model, the deals are around.

If you want to save 8-10k you'll have to probably look at 2012-2013. You could probably save ~6k on a lower mileage 2014. $10-11K on a higher mileage 2014. *assuming a new one is around 43k.

For reference, I bought my 2011 Limited with 55k on it for 29k, in 2014. To me, the 11-12k savings over new was worth it, as I'm not worried about 55k on a 4runner.

thanks for the responses everyone. I am located in Essex Count NJ (up north), building out the 4R LE as I want gets me to a MSRP of $47k and Carsdirect is quoting me a purchase price of $44.5k for that car. There are a few 2014 CPO Limiteds for sale in nice shape and less than 40k miles for the $34.5-$37 range. Add on tax and that's how I got the $8-10k savings.
I bought my 2010 Trail in Nov 2014, CPO, with 60k miles for about 10-11k under new, but it was from one of the highest volume Toyota dealers in the country, so I think that factored into the equation. They don't knickpick the price like a smaller dealer would. They have 45 new 4R's in stock right now...
But with that said, if I could do it over again, I would have bought new for the various reasons mentioned above. But when I saw this red trail sitting on the lot it was just too damn pretty to pass up.....

Mmm,...no. You can definitely find used 14-15 Limited's for about $8k less with less than 50k miles (some significantly less). At least in my area you can,..and the area I live it tends to be on the more expensive side overall.

here is the kind of used truck I'm thinking of, a new one would be at least $8,500 more and that's not including the additional tax

I agree the non-Limited models look nicer, especially the grill, but it's not enough to outweigh the full-time 4wd and the other luxuries of the Limited.

Guess that's a matter of perspective. I have a '16 Limited and like the wheels just fine. And to tell the truth, I never thought about the front end one way or the other.
I did notice when I bought it that the overall styling looked a bit dated, but they've managed to gussie it up some here and there and I think it looks alright.
I mean it wasn't penned by Pininfarina or anything but hey, it's an old school truck!
I've never quite understood pointless obnoxious responses like this....

I don't mind the styling, it's not a beauty queen, but it does have presence and won't be confused with any of the cross-overs out there. Plus they are built like tanks.
I've been a fan of Toyota SUVs for over 20 years. Back in the mid 90s my dad was torn between a Land Rover Discovery and a Land Cruiser. He decided to save money upfront (bad decision) and buy the LR. That car lasted for about 6 years and 70k miles before it was time to go. He bought a new Land Cruiser in 2001 (still has it) and hasn't looked back. My opinion is that if you want something w/ 4wd that rides high, you are simply throwing your money away buying any but a Toyota (or Lexus) body on frame truck.
So many people buy cross-overs and I just don't get it. You're getting a vehicle that is no more capable then an AWD wagon but with diminished driving dynamics and MPG. If you really want to ride high, at least get something capable of getting you through bad conditions.
{Anyway, rant over, back to the 4R}
My biggest hang-up is the power train, while the V-6 and 5-speed auto are tried and tested they are pretty ancient by modern standards, especially w/ MPG and power output. Would love to see the old 6-speed or new 8-speed transmission from the LC/LX570 and perhaps direct injection hit the 4.0 v6.
If Toyota were to make those changes I could consider a new one over a used one. But so far that is just my dream.
