What trailer hitch Bike Rack are you using

Just got a new '15 SR5 and bought a Saris Freedom 2 bike rack. I found it to be a nice more budget friendly option from some of the other stuff. I like like the system fairly well and it's really secure. Built in the US and great reviews.

I would have liked the 1UP or Kuat, but I only paid $700 for my bike so I couldn't bring myself to spend that much on the rack.

I have the same rack and a little cheaper bike. Liking the Saris so far. I will say it has a lot fewer features than the Kuats but the price difference did it for me.

Still waiting on the 4Runner purchase, but while I stalk all of your information and opinions, I may as well weigh in on something that I can help with!

I have been running the 1up USA rack (single plus 1 add-on) for a while now and have fallen in love. It's brutally simple, rock solid, and built with quality materials (IN the USA). Plus, if you're looking for some extra storage, that your bike rack can attach to when you want, they just released their cargo carrier which is very good looking. (https://www.1upusa.com/product-cargocarrier48black.html) I typically carry the single bike rack on the hitch (because I have no friends) and the add-on in the back seat of my current truck. When the 4Runner comes, I will load a photo with the rack and bike for anyone who cares.

Would like to check the rack out someday, still waiting and debating to get one. Maybe we can ride sometime too.

I have the small Yakima that holds 2, very easy to put in and out.


we had to drive down to Key West (about 8 hours) with 4 bikes on it (bootleg setup). survived just fine with no rattling or damage to it.

This was what I was going to buy at one point. But, I can't get my wife and son's bikes on a hanger rack like that. At least I didn't think I could; so i went with a tray style instead.

A Yakima TubeTop Crossbar Adapter was probably all you needed.

I will never... EVER... put any bike on a rack that allows them to swing or hang from the top tube. This goes back to my original comment that you can tell the people who care about their bikes versus the people that don't based on their bike rack.

I recently purchased a Kuat Transfer rack and I am very happy with it for the money. The lock kits are sold separately for $30 so keep that in mind. Very stable, folds down enough to clear the tailgate on the 4runner, even with the very wide bars on my Bronson.

We had a Yakima Fullswing but it was too limiting and much harder on the bikes. Some day someone will make a full swing away platform rack. MWE quit and was too heavy and complex anyway....

I've had a Yakima swing away hitch rack for over 10 years. Used it to carry 4 bikes all over the country when my son was racing Junior Nationals. Carried road, track, and mountain bikes with it. Built solid and convenient to open the hatch with bikes loaded, but it's very heavy and takes up a lot of room in the garage when not being used.

Bought a Yakima roof rack that mounts on the 4Runner roof rack side rails, with a Sidewinder to transport our road tandem. Easy to load the tandem onto the roof with that, even one person can load and unload. Used several times together with the hitch rack.

Recently bought a new mountain bike that can't hang from the hitch rack, so I bought a Yakima Highroller for the roof rack. I leave that on most of the time and it works great, just need a step stool to load and unload the bike up so high. Anytime there's a bike on the roof, I hang something on the rear view mirror to remind me that it's up there. I also rotate my little wide angle side mirror on the drivers side mirror so I can see the bike while driving. Would be better with a sunroof.

I have one of those and have used it with a small mountain bike, but it's too short for my X-large 29'er.

Another vote for 1upUSA which I have had for 4 seasons and absolutely love. Get compliments about this self adjusting rack all the time and have actually sold 3 to friends and probably twice as many to strangers. I love that it is self adjusting (road, different size MTB's all fit easily with no adjustments to the rack) and I have the 2 tray base with 2 add-ons so only have as much rack on as I need. This summer I also built a receiver into our toy box to hold 4 bikes, my motorcycle and other stuff with the rack setup and holding the bikes. It works very slick and I have also made racks to hang the racks on our garage wall when not in use which is great. PM me if anyone might be interested in seeing these.

Kuat NV 2.0 Hitch rack

Hey I'm new here but i've been using this forum to help buy stuff for my 2000 4runner LTD. After pouring through this and other threads I have decided on the Kuat NV hitch rack. It retails for about $550 which is definitely on the pricy side, however it is the most bomber rack I've looked at and the most sturdy. It includes a pin lock as well as integrated locking cables for your bikes. There is a screw in adjustment to tighten the hitch so there is no play in the hitch and the rack/bikes don't move or bounce around. As a bonus it has an integrated extendable repair stand. For me, the best part is that I can fold the rack down with two full suspension mountain bikes and still have space to fully open the rear hatch.
