What was the #1 reason you bought a T4R instead of anything else?..

I bought mine because everyone else had one and I wanted to spend a lot of money on offroad parts I'd never use so I could grow my Instagram page.

I came from the BMW euro car world, still have the BMW and go to shows and cruises. But I wanted to start camping and couldn't do that in a lowered BMW, So I bought a Jeep JK 2dr. By far the worst car I ever owned, riddled with issues. Every time I saw a new 4Runner go by I would drool over it. So after a year of dealing with issues on the Jeep I said screw it and drove to the local dealership and bought a 2019 TRD OR. Hands down the best purchase I've ever made. I FREAKING love this thing!I can still go play in the woods or drive to work and its comfortable and I can have a conversation.

To get away from my money pit BMW. Don't get me wrong, the 4runner is a money pit also, however, the money pit is on modding it; not spending thousands on maintenance items.

Reliability

But we're not just going with our #1 reason, so here's some more!

You get so much less for your money with other vehicles these days. As crap as the Jeep Liberty was, at least you got proper part time 4WD with RWD in 2WD mode. Nowadays everything's FWD or "intelligent AWD" and it all is lame. I got the Liberty in 2009, and its current replacements are FWD. Not even counting Fiat Chrysler build quality, that's meh. But even Toyota does it with the Rav4. I might have looked at a Rav4 if I was able to get RWD and part time 4WD.

It's also nice that I won't have to replace every tire when I lose one like with AWD systems. You do that in an AWD system, and you'll ruin things.

I was going to say CD player, but they didn't have any 2019 models left, so I miss out. At least the TSS stuff is lowering insurance a bit, and Android Auto gives me a good GPS. (OMG, I paid for the built in GPS, too. Waste of money! It's so crap!)

It's got a lot of room.

While the car review journalists put "rugged but plastic interior" in their list of negatives, I put it in my list of positives!

Another negative for the journalists that's a positive to me is that it's so old school. I don't need the bling bling. Heck, I think the base of base Kia Rio is significantly more bling bling than my dad's old Chevette. I just watched a Sarah N Tuned video on Youtube with her talking to the in-car AI in a Mercedes crossover, and she told it that she had swamp ass. That's what I think about that kind of bling bling technology. I just want to tell it that I have swamp ass. I'm honestly not even sure if my 2020 4Runner has voice commands. I know that it can facilitate voice commands for Android Auto, but that's all I know. Now I have to tell my phone that I have swamp ass and see what it says. Well, I did, and it just wanted to do a search. Oh well.

I also like that I can see the end of the hood from the driver's seat. That way I can see where the front end of my vehicle is so I can know to stop instead of hitting something. I can't gauge where the front of my dad's Jeep Grand Cherokee is, and it irks me. It's no good being aerodynamic if you're just going to butt your aerodynamic nose into a tailpipe.

First reason, family. We went from the two of us to three and soon to be four. My wife has a Tucson, we drove to Tennessee with three of us and I couldn’t see out the back window. I decided years ago I wanted a 4Runner. When I started looking I couldn’t believe the resale value. I started looking at 3rd gen, then 4th gen and 5th. It was 15k for a 4th with over 125k miles. I figured might well pay a little more and get a 5th with under 100k. I got a 4Runner because of what they are, one of the best vehicles around. Reliability, history, and hold their value. Also, love old school technology, if it’s works don’t fix it. 5 speed trans, timing chain motor, clutch fan, rack and pinion steering, etc

Sold my '10 TE (mistake), bought a '20 Rubicon (didn't like it - second mistake), and missed my '10 TE. Oh, and I couldn't afford a Land Cruiser... well, at least my wife wouldn't let me afford it.

The 4Runner was the only vehicle that had good off-road capability coupled with decent cargo capacity and cabin space. All that plus Toyota's quality, made it an easy choice.

Only 2 reasons. Rear seat legroom and comes with a roof rack.

I much preferred my 4dr Wrangler Rubicon to the 4Runner, but it just doesn’t have enough legroom. You can add a rack but it’s very expensive and/or you have to drill through the top to install, and it wouldn’t fit in the garage with any type of rack.

Trips with family were tough with very limited cargo capacity.

The 4runner can go off-road but it is nowhere near as capable as the Wrangler was. That’s ok for now but I will likely buy another Jeep at some point.

The 4runner is a good vehicle that has reliability and resale on its side. We’ll see how much I like it in a couple of years.

I came from an 04 Tacoma, which was a GREAT truck. Decided I really didn't need a truck and the room of an SUV was a good thing.

I'm close to retirement and the wife and I like to drive the gentler jeep roads in the mountains of Colorado. But I didn't want to ever be thinking "am I gonna bend the frame?". So I want a body on frame vehicle. After that there was no choice.

There's only one thing wrong with it. My Tacoma I didn't worry about little scratches. The 4Runner is too nice, so I get rattled every time a branch even look at it. Oh well.

I bought mine because it's the only true SUV of its size that is basic, reliable, built like a truck, looks like a truck, and rides/drives like a truck. And the back window rolls down.

Everything else in the market are car based minivans.

Anyone who mentions the Wrangler (because it is basic, built like a truck, looks like a truck, and rides/drives like a truck), I have to ask how utilitarian it is when nobody can stand to drive them on the highway for more than 30 miles? So that just makes them an SV with no U.

I bought mine because of it's the best looking SUV and is also very reliable. Also the rear window goes down which is awesome.

A few things.

When I started looking for a vehicle in 2017, I wasn't interested in AWD. I wanted a lever-controlled part time 4x4, which are hard to come by nowadays. That in and of itself helped narrow down the search. I was interested in buying a truck but realized that it wouldn't fit in the garage (or it would be too close). I was in between the tacoma and a T4R, but the only one that can comfortably seat adults in the rear bench was a T4R. It made it pretty easy.

Wife was T-boned by a driver trying to cross the road... other driver was going into a driveway. 4Runner rolled 3 times at 55 mph. Every air-bag went off.
She walked away... sore... black eye and bruises... but she walked away.

That is why I bought another 4Runner.

Rolling 3 times, I would have expected it to look worse. It looks like it could at least move, though not gracefully.
