What we can learn from our Jeep counterparts!

Well, so as someone who just sold his Jeep (fully locked and geared LJ on 35's) in the last year I would say the following:


THE JEEP WINS

My Jeep was a bit more capable on the really tough stuff (man did that thing flex) of course but my 99 Limited with the rear locker has surprised me and certainly been no slouch.

That "open air" option on the Jeep was fun but personally I was over that...the noise, the moisture that would always find a way in, and even in CO you only ran without it or the doors on limited days. And open top and doorless was a pain when actually wheeling.

The endless aftermarket support for any part from over 5 different manufacturers. This made it cheaper to mod for sure than the Runner.

The simplicity (speaking only of the TJ.) This was the single hardest thing about selling it because the tech creep has made it's way into the JK and I'm sure future generations and it's getting harder to find nice and lower mile TJ's (yes I consider them to be the last real Jeeps from this standpoint.)

The Jeep wave...but now that every mom has a JK that is pretty much gone.


THE RUNNER WINS

In all other areas I admit I prefer the runner and certainly for anything everyday, overlandish, and honestly 90% of wheeling situations as well...

Way more cargo room (even over an LJ).

Obviously a LOT better for the family based on room and comfort.

Way more comfortable and quiet than the Jeep in all circumstances.

Way more power than the "iconic" 4.0 (even geared to 4.88's that LJ was just a dog up the passes. The Runner simply blows it away on 33's but also the Jeep was an auto and I am SC'd in the Runner so....

More transfer case options than the Jeep...with all wheel drive mode etc. So again, much better really for snow and winter driving for sure.

Overall higher quality than the Jeep.


BUT THE BIGGEST WIN over the Jeep is you all on this forum! Really...I know this thread was to encourage us to be more like the Jeep guys but honestly I've found this crew to be a lot more rooted in the fun and adventure-loving aspects of the sport as well as overall much more respectful and helpful to each other. The Jeep forums were filled with well...the opposite in my opinion and much more of a bragging scene too as far as who had the most mods, who was rolling the biggest tires, etc. So I'd say personally...NO, do NOT become more like the Jeep guys in this regard. This forum is doing just fine!

Honestly I have wheeled with all sorts and my least favorite is jeep people. If they're somewhat stock then they're nice but damn they could care less if they leave you behind on a trial. They even leave noobs out there and don't wait for shit. I don't even know why they install CBs. So many times I see one or two jeeps alone and I start small talk and it always goes the same way. "We were in a big group but idk where they are. They left us back on X trail". You freaking joking? So screwed up

1. There's no such thing as inter-manufacturer animosity at the dunes and/or serious trails and rock gardens. Everyone helps everyone. I find the people who talk the most crap are the ones with the most visual mods and fewest functional ones.

2. I had a '96 XJ Sport 4 dr 5-spd 6 cyl that I bought new and absolutely loved. The torque in that thing, coupled with a long 3rd gear meant you could bury the speedometer in 3rd gear. It was brilliant in almost every way... Except, after 50k miles in New England launching boats in the ocean and skiing every winter, the rockers under the rear doors were bubbling through and I had the death wobble. I still keep my eyes out on my local craigslist for 90-96 XJ 4x4s with the 4.0 and 5-spd because I kind of miss mine.

I've found the "mostly stock" crowd regardless of make only wants to wheel with vehicles in their own brand. They all boast of the "superiority" of the make they chose, but in all honesty, from what I've seen.....it's b/c they haven't really made any effort to wheel with anything else. Most of these people would be classified as "they don't know what they don't know". Frankly....I see a lot of that on this site.

Well, they are so proud of their jeeps that they are always bragging it's the best thing on earth that they will CONVINCE you to buy one and share the problem.

I know group of people with jeeps that if you don't have a jeep, you can't go to their ''meets''

Agreed. The more people we get involved in the sport, the more people will turn out to protect the trails from closures.

I encourage everyone to get out of their comfort zone a bit with regards to other makes. What you'll find is that the brand doesn't make much difference...most serious wheelers do what we all do....modify their vehicles massively to the point that it's not really anything close to what the factory offered. And....if you don't care about the sheetmetal....you can do almost any obstacle successfully (with the right modifications).

Jeep Jamboree USA events are the same way.....they'll let a "Jeep" in that has a plated/modified tub/hood/grill/windshield frame, a completely custom frame, 1T running gear, a Chevy LSX engine, 700R4, Hero tcase, etc....but a buggy with a Liberty hood and a Toyota engine gets no love. Go figure, LOL.

Do I seriously need to pull up pictures of military jeeps from the 50's and 60's and 70's? I mean you've got the M715 gladiator pickups that blow that j70 pickup out of the water. Some of those trucks are still in use as municipal fire department trucks. There's one that I keep an eye on for when they want to sell it. Jeep>Toyota hands down. But I love them both equally.

The builders of those trucks are so overpriced but those vehicles are so awesome at the same time. I love my 4runners and I love my jeep. I love any brand 4x4, whether it's extremely built or stock, as long as you go out and have fun in it.

I just went through their site to "build" myself a power wagon pickup and just had to laugh. At the end when you see the total, which is astronomical, it gives you 2 options either add to wishlist or send an email by clicking the 'I'm serious' button.

I will not list all the 4wd machines I have owned but among them was a 1966 CJ5 and a 1972 CJ5. They were both tons of fun and good off-road machines but they were neither reliable nor rugged. The only vehicle that ever left me stranded was a Jerp (that's not a typo). After buying my first Toyota, I realized how poorly engineered the Jerp was and, in my opinion, Probably still is. I will never buy anything else but Toyota.

I aim to modify my vehicle the absolute least amount possible. YMMV.
It's too bad that the Toyotas, Nissans, and Jeeps sold overseas require less(or no) modification because they are built correctly for off-highway 4X4 use from the factory.

Well that's cause your Toyota can still smell traces of Jeep-funk on you from the last 15+ years. So like an ornery old mule, she refused to budge.

Buy the ol' girl some treats like new tires and brakes; things she can actually use — things she needs! She's a Runner man, she was built to run!

She'll warm up to you in time Paul — seriously, once she sees you're an alright guy, you'll have it made.

Pretty soon you two will be spending late-nights together, driving around, listening to music and getting a bite to eat...inseparable really.
