I made 48k on mine, and I could have probably made 50k before hitting the wear bands. I am definitely not advocating that everyone run out and ditch their stock tires for fancy replacements. :hug:
That said, the OP is talking about upgrading his wheels without need (i.e., wider tires sometimes need wider wheels, but that isn't the case here), which tells me that looks is a high priority to him. Getting pretty wheels and putting stock tires back on them is like wearing a coat and tie with ratty cut-off shorts.
Also, for what it's worth, I wasn't only talking about looks. Go to tirerack.com and check the reviews of the stock tires that come with 4Runners... starting from scratch looking at those reviews, I can't see myself ever buying that tire. They were good enough that I keep them and wore them out, but I'd never choose to buy them new.
There are any number of better tire options to choose from. Choose the one you need: better highway traction, better mileage, longer-lasting, better rock traction, better mud traction, better snow traction, and even better looks. There are even a few tires out there that exceed the OEM tires in all categories at once. If off-road and/or "tough looking" isn't your thing then get a good set of highway tires with excellent all-weather traction that will improve your gas mileage.
