Warn's are the most reliable and have lifetime warranty on most parts.
I'm running an 8k and have never stalled it, even pulling a friend out of Mickey's Hot Tub in Moab.

I don't have any experience with the SB.

TJM is now selling winches in the states. TJM Stealth Series Winch with Synthetic Rope 9000lb. This includes an aluminum fairlead, wireless control and synthetic line. I installed one on a friend's FJC. It looks well built and comes complete.
 
Warn has a 10k model (VR10000) that goes for under $600, part of their newer value line. That's the one I plan to get later this year. I've looked at many other brands, trying to avoid the typical Warn price hike, and usually can't get any confirmation of their reliability (no printed tests, etc.)--then I found this, and was sold immediately. I plan to add a quality synthetic line (add about $300) for a solid winching package.
 
i've heard nothing but good stuff for the new harbor freight badland 12000lb winch.

for 400 bucks, you cant beat that. people did test on pirate 4x4 and it beat the smitty built xr8000
 
I say go with the Warn M8000 - you can always replace the steel wire with synthetic rope down the line.

I've been back and forth with this for a while. Both SB and Warn have good reputation. Warn however has the biggest. My biggest factor is the warranty. SB only has a 2 year on hardware and 1 year on electrical while Warn has a lifetime on hardware and 1 year on electrical. The way I see it, just go with a warn and upgrade it as you go. Synthetic rope is the way to go and you can also put a wireless module on it. You can't make a SB wireless. I've battled my wallet for some time now with getting a winch. Good luck.

I have a bunch of heep buddy's and they love their harbor freight winch one of then had a Smitty and sold it and got a HF one they love them I do think they have upgrade the cable now that they have had them for some time.
 
It would take a lot of persuading for me to buy a HF winch. We all know how cheap their tools are and if you work them hard, they fail.

Spend the extra money and buy something of better quality.
 
Check out Engo! they have a great quality winch for a price you cant beat.. We found them from a customer suggestion. We were looking for an affordable option that was quality built to add to our bumpers.
 
ive been very happy, and surprised with my rugged ridge 8500.


and to whoever said you cant make it wireless...you should be able to wire in a remote module to any winch.
 
So I found out that there is WARN in Venezuela, which is where this winch will be going, so its almost a no brainer for me to with WARN since im going to have local tech support vs the other brands! Thanks for the suggestions guy! Seems like the winch market has grown and obviously there are several good options to choose from!

I can't find how to buy direct but when I searched the model numbers it brought up super winch, ramsey, to name a few I found the winch company's almost all order from wongs winches except warn
I went with a engo after reading a winch shoot out from a four wheel magazine it survived the test and most others didn't

i was skeptical when i first saw the HF winch but after all the good reviews and seeing it work in person im convinced, when i get a bumper this will be a winch im buying, plus 12000lb winch pulling a 5000lb truck means the winch works less = less power draw. and for 299 on sale you can't beat that.
 
Surprised no one has mentioned the Smitty XRC8. Great winch for $299. I have already out mine to the test and it has been great!
