I'd make it unibody with independent suspension all around. Make it front wheel drive based so that it doesn't fishtail on slick roads too. Drop that ancient 5-speed for a nice and modern CVT.

What's the advantage that manual lights have, if you don't mind me asking?

When hunting dusk or dawn from the vehicle, I don't need lights on scaring game away. With no way to turn them off. It would make me look like a flatlander... no offense meant.

Oh no, my bad. Just was looking for the motivation. That was the one thing I didn't like about the models I've test driven, but if trading something with a 150k life for something that will last twice as long means giving up auto lights, then sign me up.

limited trim has smart key as well.

I wish the limited model had:
1.) 8" or wider wheels so I can properly run a wider AT tire
2.) HID or new fancy LEDs from the factory
3.) Matching HID or fancy LEDs for the fog lights
4.) Google or Apple car stereo
5.) 6spd auto
6.) 23+ MPG average
7.) 600 lbs lighter overall vehicle

I would not want a 2" taller roof, as it is you are very very tight on clearance with most parking garages in big cities.

Really taking a hard look at purchasing a 2010 or 2011 Trail. From what I've seen these trucks are well built and overall very solid.

To play devil's advocate, if you could change anything on the 5th gen what would it be? Any dislikes?

Lots to like about the 5th gen but lots of room for improvement.

#1 issue is the motor and transmission.
If this truck had a chevy 5.3 Ecotec V8 and the 6l80 transmission, I would be so happy with it that I would buy 2 or 3 so I could have spares. It would get better mpg and have 40% more power. It's simply underpowered and impossible to get more power out of it as it sits.

#2 issue is that its a little too bulky. A few inches shorter in the rear would make it absolutely stellar offroad.

#3 AC is a little weak for 105+... All my other cars (all GM) have much better climate control systems.

Headlights need a lot of improvement.

Sound proofing. I should be able to carry a normal toned conversation on the highway.

Interior lighting.

More user friendly navigation. Maybe I've been using it wrong, but I always end up using my phone and Google Maps.

Heated seat controls on the actual seats.

More gauges.

Manual transmission.

+2 MPG

I think that's it for now really, I'm not into the ritzy luxury stuff as much as I want more power, capability, and function.

If you switch it to the "DRL OFF" or "OFF" setting on the headlight stalk it should force the lights to turn out completely even on an "Auto" Headlight system. The Auto function is typically user selected on Toyotas, meaning it will function like a regular headlamp system unless you put it in "Auto."

I almost ordered a TRDPro but the auto headlights was the deal breaker and I went with the Trail Premium. Probably not a big issue to delete but idk, I didn't want the hassle.

General storage is an issue for me, I actually had more in my Tundra Double cab. There isn't a good place to put stuff like jumper cables, tow straps etc. Of course a 5.7L V8 option would slam this truck in to one of the meanest on the roads in any class. Most people customize audio/visual equipment after a couple years of ownership, so non-issue for me. Other than that, it's one of the most functional and reliable trucks out there.

I was unaware of that. I was under the impression that when dark enough, the light sensor would automatically turn on the lights when vehicle was in drive.

The one thing I don't like about my 2013 SR5 is the color of the display, when the sunroof is open or I have sunglasses on I can't see anything on the display.

Other than that, I pretty much love it.

Honestly I have no other real complaints except for the rather poorly designed tailgate window wiper. Totally anemic compared to other trucks and cars.
