What's the best mod you've done, and why?

ICON stage 2. Superior offroad capabilities while maintaining an incredible on road stability. Rides better than stock if i'm honest. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. I wouldn't buy anything else suspension wise.

I'm a new owner as well, so I'm really ignorant about MOST 4Runner (and 4x4( stuff. So please pardon my ignorance. This "ICON stae 2" that you mentioned, is it like a KDSS system?

Do your research and decide what you intend to do before you spend the dollars. The FAQ has a good link for all of the available suspension systems and average prices, then you can do a search for feedback on each of those systems using the search window in the upper right of the forum.

That looks awesome! Tell me a little about that. Does the winch come with the bumper? It really looks cool. Would a grille guard fit over it?
Thank you for the link. I'm so new at this, it's embarrasing. I don't even really understand all the things on that page. I have no experience with after-market 4x4 systems/components. I just have an SR5P, and it has 4 wheel drive, but I have no idea how this stuff works.

best mod so far is HID headlights. because they kick serious butt over stock. "night and day difference" :wink2: .
not a mod, but Weathertech liners were pricey but well worth it. because now the floors are clean, even if my feet are not.
also not a mod, but replacing stock tires with General Grabber AT2 tires was a huge improvement off road, and they look way better.
in the middle of a slowly progressing cargo mod, inspired by Antman. I expect to be happy with it when done. because a level cargo area when seats folded, and additional storage, is awesome.

ICON is a suspension company that specializes mainly in off road kits, mainly Toyota. Their kits can include front shocks (coilovers), upper control arms, rear shocks, and rear springs. Upper stages include items like billet trailing arms and pan-rod bar. Its a full replacement for the stock suspension that IS compatible with KDSS. (KDSS is part of your suspension but is not an aftermarket item. It is an option purchased with your 4Runner.)
All KDSS stands for is "Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System." What that means is your anti-roll bars are connected to shock absorbers front and rear than can activate and deactivate depending on your speed and terrain. If you are going quickly (say freeway speed), the shock absorber attached to each roll bar (front and rear) will stiffen up, reducing the body roll and give you a stiffer and more stable ride. When going at slower speeds or on terrain that requires more wheel articulation, the shock will soften up and allow the anti-roll bar to flex and pivot with the suspension, allowing you to move over rocks or rough terrain. Really any situation bellow 30 or 40 MPH will have the KDSS deactivated. Hope this clears up some confusion.

Do they rub is all I want to know.
I've really only done one mod. I changed everything and I like it because I can easily spot my rig at the mall. Nobody elses 5th gen confuses me.

Best bang for the buck is tires, but there are a million choices....
It is hard to call out one mod as being best, because they each have positives and negatives depending on your goals and primary use for the truck. Plus they all have to build on one another to form a package...
If it is just a daily driver with occasional mild off-road, you should probably follow the typical path.
- Tires (maybe wheels)
- Lift
- Armor

Tires FTW...the rest of my mods I like too, but those stock tires leave a lot to be desired.

So, uh, what kind of mods are you looking for? Daily driveability? Hardcore rock crawling? Baja racing? Camping? Comfort?
For wheeling, my best mod was getting full BudBuilt skid plates. They've more than paid for themselves in damage that they've prevented.
For everything else, it's my RTT with the fridge a close second. I camp a lot more than I ever did before since I got the RTT and it's something that I love to do.

I daily drive, and on the weekends like to go rock climbing, mtb'ing, camping, etc. I don't see myself ever doing the hardcore rock crawling, as cool as it looks, I'm too worried to break sh*t. I wish I would've had the dealer install better tires, since I'd imagine I'd take a big hit trying to sell my stockers to replace with better tires.

Very true. Doesn't help that I'm a cheap ass and it took enough for me to get off my wallet to buy a new car ha.
